Cowaramup Primary School Newsletter

September 2019 Term 3 Week 6

About us

Cowaramup families have had a strong connection and association with Cowaramup Primary School.

Throughout the years, Cowaramup Primary School has been characterised by high quality teaching and support staff who have set high literacy and numeracy standards, resulting in excellent academic achievement and progress.

Our school prides itself on developing a positive school culture through managing behaviour in an educative, supportive way.

Last Friday our Year 5 students came back from camp in Perth with tired but excited faces. Each were eager to share their stories of how great camp was and the adventures they had. The most talked about activities were: “Bounce”, archery and the Fremantle prison tour. It is this enthusiasm and excitement that inspires our teachers to organise and lead camps each year. Congratulations to our students on their excellent behaviour and participation, Mr Yorke and Ms Mathers for their leadership and organisation of the camp, parent helpers and to all who have helped give Cowaramup students this unique opportunity.

Our school recently added another 30 IPads to our collection which now gives our students access to 100 iPads across the school. Some excellent external keyboards and using cloud based software Office 365 is giving students many options when it comes to publishing and sharing their work. The approach allows students to be able to access their work from any device at home and allowing them to continue using this resource as they move to Margaret River SHS for secondary schooling.

Our school will be participating in a review towards the end of term. The review approach is new and is conducted every 3 years in all Public Schools. It is focused on ongoing self-assessment practices with validation from collected data and plans for improvement.

It has been pleasing to find out recently that our request for additional transportable facilities has been approved. For the 2020 school year we will be provided with:

· A general transportable classroom allowing the current Room 10 to be used as an additional Kindergarten classroom.

· A specialist transportable classroom for Art/Craft

· A new transportable staffroom – This will allow office space to be created in the old staffroom.

· A sea container for storage.

Our school phones are currently being investigated regarding a possible fault. I have heard from a number of parents that the phone is ringing out in the middle of the day even though the phones are monitored by staff. Hopefully this will be rectified quickly.

Parking at the school

We have noted an increase in parents using the Staff Carpark at the Eastern end of the school. This area is designated to Staff for their use and is and traffic area. Please do not park in this area as it is not safe for children or pedestrians to utilise as a car park or a drop off/pick up zone at any time during the day.

We were very fortunate to have had an upgrade to all parent parking last year and we also have access to the Duggan Pavillion car park.

In the interests of safety for all please avoid the staff carpark.

Whilst on the subject of parking please also be aware that the Shire Rangers do issue tickets if you park on a verge that is signposted ‘No Parking’ around the school.

Thank you for your co-operation in the matter.

Book Week at CPS

Reading is definitely our secret power at Cowaramup Primary School. We kicked off Book Week with a bang this year as the children sang  “Naughty” from the stage production of Matilda. They sounded amazing and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

So many students and staff dressed up as a book related character, taking part in a parade around the basketball court set to some groovy tunes. Some people are already planning costumes for next year! Thanks to everyone who participated.

The Kindy, PP and Year 1 classes were lucky enough to have a special visitor come and read to them on Tuesday. Mr Dornan was invited to read some of the shortlisted books from this year Book Week selection. He is a wonderful storyteller and this session was enjoyed by all.

And that was book week at Cowaramup Primary School for 2019!!!

Cosmic Concert

On Friday 16th August Cowaramup Primary School celebrated excellence in the Performing Arts with a highly successful and enjoyable Cosmic Concert.  Students were given the opportunity to audition, and over 3 days 52 auditions were held.  With so much talent it was a difficult task to narrow it down to just 19 performances which involved 32 students showcasing their talent for the Cosmic Concert.

Students, parents, teachers and all those who attended the concert were treated to an amazing concert, displaying a wide variety of talents that provided an opportunity for the students to shine in the Performing Arts.

Congratulations to all our students, parents and teachers who made this day a big success. A very special mention to Karen Baker our music teacher, who put in all the hard work to co-ordinate the concert from start to finish!    The children were given the opportunity to give feedback and this is what they had to say;

ROOM 9 DAIRY AUSTRALIA COW PROJECT

Over the last ten weeks, Room 9 have been learning about the dairy industry, and in particular farm to plate. In the ten weeks we did various tasks including naming the cow, milo fundraisers, learning about how milk is made, breeds of dairy cows, technology used to produce milk and the different dairy products that are made from milk. To coincide with these learning tasks, we went out to local dairy providers Millers and Margaret River Dairy Factory to learn first hand about the dairy industry. Once we had learnt about the industry, we then had to draw cow designs to reflect the learning that had taken place. As a whole class we voted on the favourite designs and incorporated these onto our cow, Moonlight. Once we had finished the project, we sent off our learning project and are awaiting our result in the competition. We look forward to showing off Moonlight in our garden soon!!

Room 9 and 10 Macroinvertebrate Excursion

On a wild and wet Wednesday, Room 9 and 10 ventured down to the local Duggan Dam to explore and identify the macroinvertebrates that live in that environment. With the assistance from our local Environmental Officer, Michelle Keppel, students had to scoop samples out of the dam and use a branching key to identify what type of macroinvertebrate they had. We learnt about the importance of macroinvertebrates in our waterways and observed the health of Duggan Dam. Even though it was a very wet day, we had lots of fun exploring our local waterways and observing all the macroinvertebrates that exist within it.

Tuesday Soup Day

Tuesday Soup day continues to be a hit with the students and staff and has provided the perfect Winter Warmer for the colder days.   Many thanks to our volunteers that continue to help serving soup. The kids love soup day so much and we are always so grateful for our super donations of soup and time.  Please if you can donate an hour or 2 of your time or donate a pot of soup for the day we would be so appreciative.   Please contact Lainy Mammone  on email  lainyandpete@bigpond.com.
