Positive Culture for Learning

The PCL focus for Week 5 is on the school expectation of Be Proud. Students will also gain an understanding of the Key to School Success of Persistence.

Persistence

When students want to be as successful as possible at school, using helpful ways of thinking can help them be persistent and more successful. I Can Do It thinking helps students to be persistent when they are faced with setbacks, Working Tough thinking helps students to keep going on a hard or boring task, and Giving Effort thinking encourages students to put in your very best effort.

Examples of Persistent Behaviour

 • Continue to try even when schoolwork is hard.

• Continue to try hard and finish your work when you are tired.

• Don’t be distracted by others.

• Check your work when you’re finished to make sure it’s correct.

• Complete your assignments on time.

• Do not give up when homework is difficult or there is a lot to do.

• In competition, continue to try to be successful when faced with losses or setbacks.

Assembly

We warmly welcome you to join us at our next Positive Culture for Learning assembly on Wednesday 08/03/23. You will find seating up the back for your comfort, and we kindly ask you to enter and exit the CPAC via Glen Eagles Drive.

Peer Mentors

As part of Robina State School’s Positive Culture for Learning, students in Years 4 and 5 are invited to apply to be part of the Peer Skills training taking place in Term 1 to become a Peer Mentor.

Peer Skills recognises that young people have skills that they use to support their friends and peers in many ways. Peer Skills training will support the great work students already do and provide an opportunity to increase their skills in peer support.

Application forms were sent home last week and extra copies can be found at administration. Please return completed forms to Student Services by Friday 24 February.

Student Wellbeing Teachers

From the Principal

Dear parents,

Yesterday we had our first Positive Culture for Learning assembly for this year. During this assembly our new Student Council members for 2023 received their badges. These students have an important role in our school as they represent their peers and contribute to the student voice in our school. They also undertake work throughout the year that contributes to our school community. Thank you to two of our teachers Luke Muir and Lise King for their role in leading the Student Council. A big thank you also to some very proud parents who took time away from their busy schedules to attend to watch their children receive their badges. Congratulations to these students and we look forward to working with the Student Council this year.

A very important component of our Positive Culture for Learning program involves our students’ wellbeing. Our staff including our school leadership team, teachers, our student wellbeing teachers and our support teachers and staff all work collaboratively to ensure we are addressing the wellbeing needs of our students to ensure their learning journey is successful here at school. Our proactive programs in the school are designed to develop our students’ success here at school and also for life beyond the school gate. As part of this important work we have introduced our Student Wellbeing Journals this year. Our teachers and students are using these journals to positively teach and reinforce the students’ skills and strategies in managing their own wellbeing. The students I’ve spoken to in these first few weeks of school are very happy to talk about the journals and the work they are doing with their journal. I have included some completed work our students have covered so far this term below. If you would like to discuss these journals or see your child’s journal please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher to learn more.

After much discussion over the past couple of years among our local schools, regarding Interschool Sport, we have decided along with a number of our local schools, to not participate in the Interschool Sport Program this year. We will instead have a revitalised inter-house sport competition each week here at school and also participate in two Gala Days with three other schools during the year. Every student in years 5 and 6 will be able to play in the inter-house competition each week and also the Gala Days. Due to the reduced number of schools playing in each of the cluster Gala Days, the students will enjoy more game time. During Interschool Sport most students were only accessing 15 to 20 minutes of game time in the week. Our Year 3 and 4 students will also have an inter-house sport competition here at school during this year.

There were a number of contributing factors to this decision.

·         In order for a proportion of our students to attend Interschool Sport 20% of our classroom learning time each week is utilised.

·         Due to the number of staff required to attend the Interschool Sport locations our non-participating students were left at school with reduced staff to supervise an ‘in school’ sport session.

·         A number of these students would like to have participated in the Interschool Sport but were not selected due to number restrictions.

·         The expenses involved restricted some students access

·         Due to weather conditions, several days were cancelled with very short notice and no refund possible due to bus bookings and deposits etc.

Our students will still have access to higher level sport participation if they have the necessary skill level and wish to trial or nominate for these programs. Our Health and Physical Education teacher, Tanya Howard, will continue to encourage and facilitate this for all our students. There will be a range of sports covered in each season both in the inter-house competition and the Summer and Winter Gala Days. More information on these will be sent out in the coming weeks.

Regards,

Carmel Baker

Sporting Achievement

A huge congratulations to Sebastian M who has been selected for the South Coast Golf team to compete at the State Golf Tournament in May. At just ten years of age, this is an outstanding achievement, so well done Sebastian!

Interhouse Sport

This year all students from Years 3-6 will be participating in a regular afternoon sport competition.  The goal for this program is to ensure maximum participation, inclusion, good sportsmanship, and quality performance outcomes.

YEARS 5 & 6 will be starting their weekly interhouse sports competition this Friday! Students have been placed in house teams and are welcome to wear their house-coloured polo shirts to school. Year 6 will be playing Oz Tag for the next three weeks and Year 5 will be playing Ultimate Frisbee, then they will swap for the last three weeks of term 1.

YEARS 3 & 4 will be starting their fortnightly interhouse sports competition next Wednesday, so are also welcome to wear their house-coloured polo shirts to school.  The children will be playing a modified netball game which we have been learning in PE lessons.

We’re looking forward to a fun afternoon!

Running Club

Running club is on every morning! Students are collected from the tuckshop area at 8:10am and our focus this term will be Cross Country practice.  All students are welcome to join.  Younger students can be buddied with an older student or sibling to make sure they’re safe and having fun. Thanks to Ms Strickson, Mrs Cassar, Ms Kujat and Mr Hockings for helping our kids stay active!

District Swimming

Our team of 15 swimmers did so well at Somerset College Pool last Thursday.  Whilst none of our swimmers qualified for South Coast, they should be very proud of their efforts in a very competitive event.

Upcoming 10-12yrs District Sport Trials

Week 7 - Boys Rugby League

Week 8 - Boys and Girls AFL

Return your child’s district nomination form (emailed to all parents in Week 2) to Mrs Howard if your child is interested in trying out.  Only 3 Robina students can attend each trial, so students will be selected based on age, playing experience and level of ability.
