Band Camp

Thank you so much to Sandie Rose Castle, our conductors, tutors, Kim and the many parents who assisted over the 2 days and evenings so our students could experience the joy of music, whilst having fun. I know our band students developed and improved their music skills. Of note was the exceptional student behaviour, respect and manners shown across the weekend, along with their musical talent. Thanks also to Mrs Yates and Mrs Scicluna who were also able to attend. So many hours went into the organisation of the weekend, and I am very grateful to our band committee. As you can see from the photos, they are ready to perform at the Instrumental Music Festival.

Walk Safely to School Day

Thank you to Ms Fiona Groves who organised our annual, ‘Walk Safely to School Day’. As well as walking to school and talking about road safety, the students and lots of teachers wore their crazy socks.

Reconciliation Week & Sorry Day

Under One Sky: Yesterday, Today and Forever is the theme of this year's Reconciliation Week.  For more than 60,000 years First Nations People have looked up at the sky to understand the world around them, using their observations of the stars, planets, Moon and Sun to predict weather changes & tides, to navigate on land & water and to plan food gathering, hunting, trading, and plan ceremonies.  Sharing stories under the stars is also a way of passing on Aboriginal lore to children about family, traditions, culture and history.

AEDC Survey

The Australian Early Development Census is a nationwide data collection of early childhood development at the time children commence their first year of full-time schooling. The census highlights what is working well and what needs to be improved to support children and their families by providing evidence to support health, education and community policy and planning. Thanks to our Kindergarten teachers who completed this survey last week.

Project Penguin

Our Year 5 students have been working with Mackellar Girls High School extension students on Project Penguin. We look forward to seeing their ideas come to fruition soon.

Zone Cross Country

Well done to all those students who represented HPS at Tuesday's Zone athletics carnival. The cold and wet weather didn't deter our runners from achieving their personal best efforts and results. Thank you to Mrs Saint Pierre and Mr Davis for contributing to our school's involvement and our students’ success.  Best wishes to those students who have progressed to the North Sydney Regional carnival.

International Batten Disease Awareness Day & Fundraiser

On Wednesday 9th of June we are organising a fundraiser to raise money for Batten Disease. There will be stalls set up at lunch time selling raffle tickets, cakes, lollies and a stall selling Batten Disease merchandise such as teddies, pens and drink bottles.

Batten Disease is a degenerative disease which affects children and young adults. Our dear friend Mia who attended Harbord with us had Batten Disease. Mia passed away in 2018 aged 9. We want to honour Mia’s memory while we also raise funds and awareness for Batten Disease.

Please send lots of gold coins to school with your children so we can help pay for research into Batten Disease and hopefully find a cure.

Raffle prizes include a voucher for kids yoga and a chocolate hamper with more to be confirmed. Prices will range from $1 to $5 per item.

Thank you Violet and Lily 6D

Band Camp

Thank you to the host of conductors, tutors and parent volunteers who make our band camps possible.  We have a very strong band program at Harbord which is only possible by our supportive staff, student and parent community.

Please read the following report from Mrs Sandie Rose-Castle and some students regarding our recent Band Camp.

Band Camp for Intermediate, Senior and Concert Band students (in years 4, 5 and 6) was held on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th May at school.

Over a 24 hour period the 160 students covered many weeks’ worth of music and instruction both in full band rehearsals and small instrumental tutorials with 13 professional music tutors.

As well as the music, the bands enjoyed some delicious food, bonding and a movie night. The students went home to their own beds to sleep then continued learning on Sunday morning. At the conclusion of band camp, all three bands performed 2 of their 3 Festival pieces for their parents.

The Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival will showcase many school and community ensembles from May 31st to June 9th and has a Jazz Band component on June 20th.

Our bands will perform on

·         June 2nd (Junior, Concert and Intermediate Bands)

·         June 3rd (Senior Band)

·         June 20th (Jazz Band)

Some comments by our Band members about Band Camp include….

‘I liked being able to spend the weekend making music with all of my friends. The tutorial sessions were helpful and the movie was fun. I now feel much more confident in my playing’  Melina C – Concert Band

‘I really enjoyed being able to progress my pieces and learning with Scott the tutor. I enjoyed watching and playing in the performance with my friends. I also enjoyed the sausage sizzle and the movie. Overall band camp was a great experience and I am already looking forward to next year!  Wolfie B – Intermediate Band

The tutorials really helped me as I wasn’t so sure with the new pieces, but now I’m sure. The muffins were delicious. The movie night was really fun and I felt proud at the concert because I played so well’ Georgie W – Senior Band

I enjoyed everything about band camp. The highlight was definitely the performance for parents at the end. It has been a long time since we last performed on the stage. It was great to be able to use all that we had learned from the tutors at Band Camp and see how much we had improved. Oh, the muffins were great as well!’  Violet M – Concert Band

Scripture and Ethics

A feature of the public education system in NSW is the opportunity to provide time in class for education in ethics, faith and morality from a religious or non-religious perspective at the choice of parents.

The school website https://harbord-p.schools.nsw.gov.au  provides information on these options to support parent/carer choice.

At Harbord we offer:

·         Protestant Scripture K-6

·         Catholic Scripture K-6

·         Ethics Y1-6 (subject to availability)

Students not attending the above will engage in non-curriculum activities.

For more information about Special Religious Education (SRE) and Special Education in Ethics (SEE), including the list of approved providers, please visit: https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/curriculum/learning-across-the-curriculum/religion-and-ethics

To minimise the disruption to Scripture and Ethics classes, we can accommodate changes twice per year. Students will continue the same arrangement as the previous year or semester, unless a parent/carer has requested a change in writing.

If you would like to make a change, please complete the attached form.

Changes to scripture/ethics are due Friday 11 June

Gardening Working Bee - 29th May

Just a reminder that we are having a working bee at the school this Saturday 1pm to 4pm. The message below was sent out via Skoolbag last week:

Calling all those who are willing and able to help us with a gardening blitz around our school grounds! Due to Covid, we were not able to host a single working bee last year, so we would love some help from our school families to get on top of a couple of gardening jobs that have been piling up! We will be holding a Working Bee on Saturday afternoon 29 May from 1pm - 4pm, followed by a sausage sizzle to thank you for your efforts!    Please save the date and come and help us for any part of the afternoon that you are able to - even if you can't come for the whole time. Any help will be hugely appreciated. If you are able to stay for the sausage sizzle at the end, please RSVP for catering purposes by sending a quick email to: Email mailto:sustainability@harbordpandc.com.au, and let us know how many family members will be joining you for the sausage sizzle and whether there are any special dietary requirements (e.g. gluten free).    Please bring the following with you on the day:    - Sunscreen - Hat - Water bottle - Gardening gloves   If you have any of the following, please bring them along too:    - Garden fork - Garden spade/shovel - Secateurs - Wheelbarrow - Rake   Please make sure all your personal items are clearly labelled and don't forget to check with the QR code on the front gate when you arrive.    We look forward to seeing you there!

News in Kindergarten

Over the last fortnight, Kindergarten students have been reciting a nursery rhyme for their news. Some students even made some amazing sets with props to present their fairy tale. Harper and Nick brought their sets to me and share their nursery rhymes.

I was so impressed with how they could recite ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and ‘Jack and Jill’!

Year 2 Science Incursion

Last week our Year 2 students attended a science incursion run by Kaleidoscope Science. This incursion explored forces and movement. There were lots of opportunities for students to be involved in experimenting and discovering what happens when a push or pull force is applied to an object.

Some students in 2B shared their recounts of the incursion with me. A big highlight for many of the students was when Lachlan pressed a lever and shot Mrs Berry up into the air.

2021 Student Representative Council (SRC)

Our 2021 SRC have been busy learning about how to take an idea from their peers and critically analyse it. In small groups they have been looking at ideas for improvement or change in and around our school and are creating Positive, Minus, Interesting charts (PMI). Students consider problems from a variety of viewpoints, building critical and creative thinking skills. Discussions during our meetings are animated and passionate!

Stay tuned for some of their exciting ideas to become positive change at Harbord.

Instructional Leadership

Miss Wright and I have enjoyed working with the Kindergarten students and their teachers over the past few weeks. Kindergarten are developing their number sense and are currently focusing on combining two or more groups of objects to model addition. Students at this stage generally rely on concrete materials and count one-to-one when combining groups of objects.

We use visual representations such as ten frames to assist students when counting how many altogether. Students are encouraged to explain or demonstrate how their answer was obtained and to record informally using drawings, words and numerals. We do not introduce the +, - or = symbols until Year 1.

Sustainability Presentation

On Friday 28th May (Week 6) Years 1-6 will get the opportunity to learn from an expert eco warrior! Anthony Hill from Plastic Pollution Solutions first visited Harbord Public School in 2019, where we saw our students pledge to become Plastic Ninjas! Anthony will return again, this time to share information about how we can become ‘conscious consumers’. The presentations will be tailored to suit each grade and students will be invited to become part of the important movement to help raise awareness and take steps to fight plastic pollution. Anthony’s message is built around educating, engaging and empowering everyone to make better choices for the environment.

This year at Harbord we have lots of exciting initiatives. These presentations will be a great way for students to learn about the problem we face and the many ways we can change it for the better. We look forward to welcoming Anthony back and sharing all the fantastic ways we can make Harbord more sustainable!

Issue 4 is available online and can be viewed at https://scholastic.com.au/media/6078/bc421.pdf. Hard copies have arrived and have been distributed to class teachers. We would like to encourage families to become familiar with viewing the catalogue online so that we can reduce the number of paper copies received and support our school and community in reducing the waste we produce. Please discuss with your child saying 'No thank you. I'll look at it online', when catalogues are offered in class. Orders for Issue #4 will close Friday June 4th.

A reminder that if you are ordering an item as a surprise gift you can select the gift option. This option marks your items so they aren't delivered to classrooms, the library staff set them aside and call to inform you they can be collected from the front office.

Library Matters

Last week some of our classes participated in National Simultaneous Storytime. On Wednesday we joined thousands of students across Australia for story-time with an astronaut. All the way from the International Space Station, astronaut Shannon Walker read Australian author/illustrator, Philip Bunting's book 'Give me some Space'. There were lots of questions about planets, astronaut food, how do you become an astronaut, and the fact that children across the country were all watching the story at the same time as us. Class 5K were spotted in the live facebook feed posting a 'hello from Harbord'. Our photos show 5K's FB post, and students from 1M, 2T, 2H, 2B, 2W, 2s and 3L enjoying storytime with an astronaut.

We would like to acknowledge a most generous donation of high quality home readers made to the school last week. Thank you to Jack D (3B), Tom D (2M) and their mum Kylie for gifting the school a resource that our students will be able to access to improve their reading skills.

Reconciliation Week

This week is Reconciliation Week. Classes are contributing a Nikita Ridgeway artwork titled Reconciliation: a ripple effect through education, to the library that will be used to create a magnificent wall display. Elyssia H and Archie H have started on a display board representing their connection to country.

Our book displays are out and ready for students to borrow.

Change to borrowing limits - due to the high demand of some of our non-fiction titles we are limiting each student to one non-fiction book at a time so that the popular titles are available for all students and not stuck in rotation within one or two classes. Students can of course reserve a book to ensure they don't miss out. If your child is unsure how to reserve a book via their student portal they can ask one of the teacher librarians to reserve it for them, or ask for a demonstration on how to access the library catalogue from home.

New books are starting to arrive and the anticipation of what is about to be available brings excitement to so many faces. Students are eagerly stepping out of comfort zones and embracing the idea of reading widely. It is encouraging to hear students recommending books to their peers, sharing their likes and dislikes about their most recent reads, and even daring to ask the teacher librarian to choose a book for them. The table of 'Mrs Hong's Picks' is popular with our advanced readers and constantly needs replenishing. The challenge is now to persuade our intermediate readers to not only borrow tried and true favourites such as  Diary of a Wimpy Kid but to add to their repertoire and tackle books with more depth. Titles such as The Pesky Kids, Lemony Snicket, 39 Clues, Kensy & Max and even old favourites - books by Roald Dahl.

As we are now half way through the term overdue book notices will soon be issued. We ask that students check classrooms, book shelves at home, the bottom of school bags, OOSH book shelves, under beds, siblings rooms and that comfy spot where they always curl up to read. If your child brings home an overdue notice please note we are only asking for them to make a solid attempt at locating it so that it can be returned and enjoyed by others.
