Hindmarsh Shire Youth Council

I had the privilege to attend the official launch of the 2019 Hindmarsh Shire Youth Council at the Jeparit Town Hall on Wednesday night.  Four students from Nhill College - along with four from each of Rainbow P-12 and Dimboola Memorial Secondary College - will make up the new Youth Council for this year.  Nhill College students elected to the council are Brodie Kennedy, Ruby James, Trinity Cannell and Lani Elliot.  All of these girls are to be congratulated for being prepared to represent the interests of youth in our region, and I am sure that they will be great ambassadors for our school and our community.  Wednesday night was also the last official function attended by Meg Hall in her capacity as the Hindmarsh Shire's Youth and Early Years Officer before she embarks on a new career path.  On behalf of all students and staff at Nhill College, I would like to thank Meg for all she has done in support of the young people in our community and wish her every success in her future studies.

School Council Elections

Thank you to those parents, students and staff who put their names forward last week for school council.  All positions up for nomination have been filled and as we did not receive more nominations than vacant positions there will be no need for an election in any category.  Joining school council this year are Tarrah Dodds and Carlee Kennedy, along with returning parent members Michelle Marshall and Emily Donnell.  Our student representative is Ellie Murden, and our newest staff representatives are Alannah King and Felix Cunningham.  A final parent and student representative will be co-opted at the next meeting.  Thanks again to all of those people for their willingness to be involved in our school.  I look forward to seeing them all at our first meeting on Tuesday 12th March.

Family Details Information

Earlier this week all families were sent an envelope containing a hard copy of their family details information.  Each year the school is required to check this information to make sure that family details are recorded correctly on our system.  If there are any changes, errors or omissions to your details, please take the time to make the necessary corrections, sign the form and return it to school as soon as possible.

Photographing, Filming & Recording Students Policy

In today's society the taking and sharing of photographs containing images of other people's children can be a sensitive issue.  At our last school council meeting on Tuesday night, we reviewed the school's Photographing, Filming and Recording Student Policy, and at that meeting it was felt that we needed to raise awareness within our school community of a number of the features within that policy document.  The following two key points were identified that school council specifically wanted to be highlighted:

  • School performances, sporting events and other school approved activities

Nhill College permits parents/carers, students and invited guests to photograph, film or record school performances, sporting events and other school-approved activities.

Nhill College requests that parents/carers, students and invited guests who photograph, film or record school activities only do so for their own personal use and do not publish the images in any form, including on social media, without the prior consent of persons whose children also appear in the images.

Neither the school nor the Department own or control any images of students taken by parents/carers, students or their invited guests at school activities.

  • Staff use of personal devices

School staff may use their own personal devices to capture images of students for reasonable and legitimate educational purposes. If this occurs, staff are expected to upload the images to the school database and delete the images from their device within a week of the images being captured.

A copy of the policy has been attached to the newsletter for parents to read in it's entirety.  If you have questions regarding any aspect of this policy, please feel free to contact the school.

It's Not Ok To Be Away

Attendance is an important aspect of schooling at Nhill College. If you are not attending school it makes it difficult to learn. Class attendance will be celebrated each week, with classes being recognised for the best attendance in both primary and secondary classes. Last week’s class awards went to 1/2 Smith, 4/5/6 Crouch, 8X and 8Y. These classes will be going into the draw for a chance to win pizza for lunch at the end of the term.

Off This Planet

On Tuesday students from Year F-7, along with classes from the Nhill Lutheran School, participated in various workshops in a mobile planetarium in the stadium. Students listened about the 50th anniversary of the moon, talked about the astronauts as scientists and how rockets are like large “fireworks”. Students then entered through a tunnel into a Starlab dome and watched presentations of a shuttle launch, Mars Rover, the solar system, planets, stars, constellations and much more… All images were projected on the roof of the dome. Students of all ages thoroughly enjoyed this incursion. Thanks to Miss Tink for organising the event.

Year 7 Camp

The Year 7 cohort are currently travelling home from an enjoyable three day camp at Rose's Gap. The feedback to date is that students found it to be very positive and it was great to hear that new friendships are developing. Thank you to Miss Roantree for her organisation and leadership for this camp. Further thanks to Miss King and Mr Dahlenburg for attending as well. I am sure there will be more news re the adventures on camp in future newsletters.

Yr 7 and Yr 10 Vaccinations

Secondary School vaccinations will be held this coming Monday the 25th Feb.

The Secondary School Vaccine Program offers free vaccines to Year 7 and 10 students. These vaccines provide protection against:

  • Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough) – one dose for year 7 students

  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV) – two doses for year 7 students

Meningococcal A,C,W,Y – one dose for year 10 students

Parents/guardians of year 7 and 10 students please remember to bring along the vaccine consent card booklet that was sent home a couple of weeks ago. You need to read the information, complete and return the card regardless of whether your child is being vaccinated at school.

Student Absences

Regular attendance at school is extremely important to the social and academic development of all children.  It is a Department requirement that parents contact the school each day their child is absent.  Any unauthorised absences currently trigger an SMS via Compass at 9.45am each morning to notify parents that their child is not at school.  If a parent receives such an SMS, it is requested that they contact the school as soon as possible to provide a reason for their child’s absence.  This can be done by entering an explanation directly onto Compass via the app installed on your phone, or by calling the College on 53912111.  (Please note that the Skoolbag app is no longer being used by the school to communicate messages.)  In an effort to further reduce the rate of unauthorised absences being recorded at Nhill College, office staff will follow up with a phone call if a response to the SMS has not been received by 10.45am on the day of each absence.

Congratulations to all competitors for their outstanding efforts throughout the carnival. Thank you to all the parents and supporters that attended to encourage the students, to all staff and other officials (it was good to see some ex-students lending a hand) for their excellent work in ensuring the day ran smoothly. A team of students will now compete at the Little Desert Championships in Dimboola on Monday the 4th of March for Secondary and Wednesday the 6th of March in Horsham for Primary. We wish these students all the best.

On Compass there is a survey for parents to complete to provide us with feedback on the new format.  We would appreciate if parents could take the time to fill this out.

Annual Action Management Plans for Allergies, Anaphylaxis and Asthma for 2019

If your child has any of the above medical conditions it is a requirement that you provide the school with an updated Management Plan each year.  Management plans need to be signed by the child's medical practitioner or specialist and a recent photo of the child attached to the plan before being provided to the school.

We would appreciate parents assistance in this area so we can follow your childs action plan if to ensure the most up to date treatment is provided should the need arise.

Work Experience Information

YEAR 10 AND 11 WORK EXPERIENCE DATES 2019

All students in Years 10 and 11 are advised that they will be required to participate in the Nhill College Work Experience programs during the following dates:

Year 11:  First week of Term 3 - 15th - 19th July (Melbourne Trip students will depart Nhill Sunday 14th July)

Year 10:  Final week of Term 3 - 16th to 20th September

Year 11 students should be well and truly working on obtaining a placement, particularly those interested in high demand industries or placements situated in larger cities.  Students wishing to attend the Melbourne Trip must return their permission slip with $100 deposit by 8th March.  This deposit is a commitment to attend the trip, as accommodation bookings and final costings will depend on numbers of students who pay this deposit.

Year 10 students should also be thinking about a suitable placement, and are encouraged to come and talk to Mrs Sampson about their ideas.  Placements fill up quickly, it is highly recommended to plan early to avoid disappointment.

VICTORIA POLICE WORK EXPERIENCE 2019

All students in Years 10 and 11 are advised that the Victoria Police Work Experience applications will open on the 11th February.  Any students with a strong interest in a career within Victoria Police are encouraged to see Mrs Sampson and submit a letter outlining an expression of interest as soon as possible, with the final due date being 8th March.   If multiple students apply Mrs Sampson and the leadership team will process the applications to select the most suitable student to put forward to Victoria Police for consideration.  Each school can only submit one application to Victoria Police, and this does not guarantee a placement.  Victoria Police will notify schools of the outcome by Monday 29th April.

BYODs

A list of latest model computers available from Nhill Bi-Rite and Wimmera Office Equipment has been included in this week’s newsletter for the consideration of families interested in a BYOD.  These lists contain a range of devices that will be able to support student learning – at home and at school – over the next few years.  A reminder that all students have free access to Microsoft Office, as well as some Adobe programs through their school subscription.  For families considering a BYOD, it is worth noting that electronic resources are being used more and more frequently in classes, with the College subsidising Edrolo subscriptions for all VCE students, while Maths Pathways and Education Perfect resources are also being used more extensively across Years 7-10 this year.  If you have any questions related to the College’s BYOD program, feel free to contact Mr Shrive.   The BYOD product lists can be downloaded from the link below, as well as being available from the College website.  Printed copies can be obtained from Mr Shrive on request.

2019 Compass and Skoolbag

From 2019 Nhill College will no longer be using the SkoolBag app. This means all notifications and absent notes will happen within Compass.  We encourage parents to logon to Compass to approve any absences your child may have, or to lodge an absence in advance if the dates and times are known.  The following is a reminder from the Compass FAQ Sheet that went home with all students last year.  The FAQ Sheet can also be found on our website.

How do I submit an absence note?

If using a computer, go to https://nhillcollege-vic.compass.education/ then view the student’s profile, select “Attendance” and then go to “Notes/Approvals”.  Click on “Add Attendance Note” to submit a note via Compass.

If you are using the app, go to the student’s profile, “Approvals” tab, and then click the plus button to add a note.  You can submit notes ahead of time if you know your child will be absent in the future.

From 2019 parents will be able to complete bus notes on our website at http://www.nhillcollege.vic.edu.au/.  This will not require the app to access.  Alternatively, parents will be able to ring the College or email nhill.co@edumail.vic.gov.au

Cultural Diversity Week

Hindmarsh Shire Council and West Wimmera Health Services are working together to celebrate Cultural Diversity Week in 2019. To be held from 16 to 24 March 2019, the theme for this year is ‘Proud to Belong - Your Story, Your Generation’.

As a way of celebrating multiculturalism and diversity, we extend an invitation to members of the community to share your story on multicultural heritage and identity.

This program will be delivered in a similar method to the highly successful and well received ‘Faces of Hindmarsh’ project.

At least 29 different nationalities currently reside in Hindmarsh Shire, within Victoria almost half of Victorians were either born overseas or have at least one parent who was born overseas.

If you, or someone you know would like to share their story please contact Michelle Farinha, Community Development Officer at community@hindmarsh.vic.gov.au  or 5391 4444 prior to Sunday 3 March 2019.
