Eleebana Extra

Monday 24 June 2019 Week 9 Term 2

From the Principal

Top Playground

Work to landscape and laying artificial turf on our top playground has begun.

Our senior students are doing a great job of finding appropriate play areas during this work. We are looking forward to seeing it all come together in the next fortnight.

Yarning Circle

Our Yarning Circle project has taken its first steps with the sandstone blocks being laid last week. Our enthusiastic Aboriginal Education Team have been working very hard to make these plans a reality and are absolutely delighted to see the project beginning to take shape.

Eleebana Excellence

It was my absolute privilege last week to attend the Eleebana Excellence concert featuring our school’s Junior and Senior Bands. It was an amazing performance that highlighted the talent and dedication of these children, many of whom are very new to the Band and to their instruments. All those early morning rehearsals, hours of practice and hard work really paid off, it was a great concert that was thoroughly enjoyed by an appreciative audience.

Thank you to Dr Leonard who was MC for the evening and to Ms Wingrove for all her hard work supporting our band. Thanks too to all those whose generosity through donations and ticket sales, supported our Band's fundraising efforts.

Finally, huge congratulations to our Band Conductors, Ms Phillipa and Ms Wallace, and to all our wonderful Band students - Bravo!

Disco

Our school disco will be held this Thursday evening.

Kinder        4:30-5:15pm

Years 1-2   5:30-6:30pm

Years 3-6   6:45-8:15pm

$3 entry - kinder, $5 entry years 1-6. Children will receive crisps and a drink.

A parent session around cyber safety and digital citizenship will be available for parents from 6:45 -8:15pm (please note; this session is not suitable for children)

Cyber Safety

On Thursday, students in Years 4-6 will attend a presentation from the ‘Cyber Safety Lady’. This session was designed to improve the digital citizenship of our students and to help them manage themselves safely online.

In addition, we are pleased to offer a parent session on Thursday evening (during the disco) around Raising Responsible Digital Citizens.

School Pick Ups and Parking

There have been several issues around school drop-off and parking in recent weeks. Several parents have received fines for stopping in the no stopping zones along Bronwyn Avenue. There has been concerns raised around student walking through the teachers’ carpark and issues arising with the entry to the carpark blocked by parents dropping off students. Moreover, we have had complaints from our neighbours about people parking across driveways and interfering with bins.

I certainly understand the difficulties of negotiating school drop off and pick up along busy roads, however, I would just remind all our families to please be mindful when driving and parking around our school.

Early Arrivers

We have ongoing issues with the number of students who are arriving at school before the 8:30am bell. School supervision does not begin until 8:30am and no students should be in our playground before that time.

We understand that parents may have their own work commitments that make it difficult to manage these time frames, however, for the wellbeing of our students, we need for parents to work out a way to manage this issue. Eleebana PS is lucky enough to have an onsite OOSH and there are currently places available every morning, this may be a very good solution for some families.

Please work with us to care for your child by ensuring they are not at school unsupervised.

Sports Update

Jordan Gellatly Day - Out of Uniform Day

To help support Jordan make his way to Melbourne for the National Swimming Championships the SRC are holding an out of uniform day on Tuesday, 25 June. Students and teachers are encouraged to come in their Sportiest clothes and bring a gold coin donation.

Rocks for NAIDOC week

To help us with our NAIDOC week project we are asking if every child could find a smooth surfaced rock about as large as the palm of an adult hand. The rocks will be painted by the students as part of our NAIDOC Week activities. Rocks can be collected and brought into school anytime. Class teachers will store the rocks in class until week ten.

Library News

As we get closer to the end of Term 2, it is that time of year when we are trying to make sure that our library catalogue is up to date. We are currently in the process of streamlining our overdue procedures and policies and are trialling a new method of communication to alert parents that their child/children have overdue library books. We are now going to be sending overdue library notices via email. They will go to the nominated family email account that is on file for your child and will outline details of the overdue book such as the title, author and date it was due.

Notices are sent home to remind students and parents which books they are looking for. It is often hard for the students to remember what the title of the book is, when they are given a verbal reminder.

It can become quite expensive to replace all of the lost and damaged books in our library over time, so we kindly ask that if your child does lose or damage a book they have borrowed, that a flat rate fee of $10 be paid to the office to help cover the cost of a replacement. If you receive an overdue notice and believe that your child has returned the book already, please contact us via email return so that we can double check the library shelves and classrooms. Occasionally, books don't scan correctly or students forget to put them in the return box and they end up back on the shelf. If they are here, we will find them, so please don't panic! Students may still borrow as normal if they have overdue library books. Only in extenuating circumstances, such as having multiple overdue books for a long period of time or frequently having overdue books, will students be exempt from borrowing privileges.

We understand that locating overdue books can cause frustration and we sincerely appreciate your assistance and support in the matter. If you have any concerns please do not hesitate to come and see Mrs Hopper in the library or simply reply via email to the overdue notice you may receive.

P&C Update

Eleebana Community Involvement

Did you know research continues to show that children whose carers are engaged in their schooling receive higher marks, have enhanced social skills, show improvement in their behaviour and have greater self-esteem? What fabulous reasons to get involved!

Here are 2 ways you could help out at school this term:

1.       On Wednesday 3rd July 11:40-1:00 pm (middle session) parent helpers are invited to come along and assist students with painting their rock contribution to the NAIDOC week stone sculpture - Wedgetail Eagle, the Awabakal totem. (Please wear old clothes).

2.       You could lend a hand in the canteen one morning from 9– 12pm. Kids love to see their family members behind the windows at canteen. It’s also a great way to meet other parents.

However, we do understand that it can be hard to juggle competing demands and find the time to be actively involved in school activities during work hours; but with the planning of our annual Spring Fair in full swing, here’s 5 different ways you could assist:

1.       Green Thumbs – start propagating plants for our annual plant stall - or if you’re not much of a gardener, you can drop your cuttings to the canteen and we’ll grow them for you!

2.       Book worms – start saving up your quality adult and children’s books for the book stall (we’ll let you know where you can drop these closer to the date).

3.       Craft Lovers – This year we are having a handmade craft stall –why not take a look at Pinterest and get inspired. Ideas may include handmade cards, Christmas decorations, children’s items, jewellery……the options are endless!

4.       Business people/owners– talk to your company about what they may be able to offer in the way of silent auction and raffle prizes. We’re happy to supply you with a letter and will give any business that supports our great school, a shout out on our Facebook site. If you’re looking to go a little further – we’re keen to secure 5 corporate sponsors. With a donation of $250 (or over), these lucky businesses will have the opportunity to assist with the start-up of a new fair activity and will have exclusively advertising rights to these. For more information please email Anna - eleebanapublicschool-fund@pandcaffiliate.org.au

5.       Don’t forget to book a day off work - Friday 1st November for the EPS SPRING FAIR !!! (and invite your friends and family to come along too).

P&C Environmental Award

Have you seen the P&C’s latest donation – a “real plant” presented weekly at the junior assembly to the class winners of the environmental award? This donation has caused great excitement and pride among student and teachers alike!

Wednesday 26th June- Erin, Alison M

Thursday 27th June- VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Friday 28th June- VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

If anyone can lend a hand for just 2.5 hours in the morning, we would really love the help!

We need 2-3 people each day to help prepare lunches.

No experience necessary!

Last week’s meal deals were incredibly popular! We hope everyone enjoyed the deals. If you have any suggestions - we would love to hear them, as your feedback is important to us.

We have one more exciting canteen special to finish off the term – so keep your eyes open for our last offer before the holidays. We think you’ll love it.

Thanks

Juley and Raychel

We proudly continue to offer a healthy canteen, run in-house at a low price point – this is only made possible by the assistance of our valued volunteers. We are always in need of new helpers, so if you have one morning a week, month or term that you could spare to assist Juley or Raychel, they would warmly welcome you - eleebanapublicschool-canteen@pandcaffiliate.org.au

We would like to encourage families to register for and utilise our online ordering system - which is available via https://quickcliq.com.au/. We are currently trialing an 8:30 am cutoff for all online orders. This allows for the smooth running of the canteen and is the best way to keep up to date with food options and prices.

A reminder if you wish to place an order over the counter, the cut off time is 9.00a.m.
