Principal's Message

Dear Community

Welcome to Term 4 everybody! It’s going to be a busy 10 weeks with lots of upcoming events including Book Week, school photos, reports, graduation, end of year awards and swimming lessons amongst other things. Please make sure you are familiar with the Term Planner at the bottom of this newsletter to make sure you are up to date with all the goings on!

Unfortunately, we are still under Phase 4 COVID conditions which means that there is still limited parent access to the school site. The State Government should be making an announcement next week about whether we will be moving to Phase 5 conditions, part of which will hopefully see the removal of the 2m squared rule. Once this rule is removed, we will again be able to increase parent involvement in school activities again. However, if it is not, many of our traditional Term 4 events such as kindy orientation and the end of year concert will have to run with significantly altered formats. Hopefully in the next newsletter at the end of Week 3, I will be able to share with you more information around this.

In the meantime, please read below for information on some of the events and initiatives that will be running this term.

Book Week/ Fair

Next week is Book Week and we have a range of exciting activities planned for students!

  • Reading of “The Library Troll”, a book written by our very clever library officer, Mrs Daniels. This will be read over the PA by myself and Mr Dorozenko.
  • A “Find the Library Troll” activity for classes throughout the week. For much of this year, the Library Troll has been hiding under the bridge at the library entrance. We hear he will be venturing out and about next week in celebration of Book Week.
  • Wednesday Incursion – The Great Discovery. Please make sure your child has returned their permission slip and payment
  • Friday Dress Up Day: All students are encouraged to dress up as a favourite book character. Lets see what curious creatures and characters we can bring to life!

The 2020 Book Fair will also be held next week, October 20-22. This year, to accommodate COVID guidelines, there is a booking system for parents who wish to come and view the books. This is to enable us to manage the number of adults inside the library at any given times. To make a booking:

  • Parents need to search for www.schoolinterviews.com.au
  • Then they need to hit the Make a Booking tab.
  • From there they will be asked to enter a code –    w8yvr

Further on in the newsletter there is more information around the timing and set up of the Book Fair.

School Photos

School Photos will be held in Week 3 of this term. Please read below and check the Term Planner for further details.  They will be held over two days, with sibling photos, Kindy group 1 and PP-6 students being taken on Tuesday 27 October and Kindy Group 2, more sibling photos and graduation photos being taken on Thursday 29 October.

This year, we will be using Fotoworks to manage our school photos.

Cyber Safety

At the end of last term, we provided some information fact sheets around Snapchat and YOLO in our newsletter. This week, we have included a fact sheet about TikTok. Please continue to reinforce with your children the safe practice of not giving out any personal information online, particularly in chat groups, and also to be mindful of chatting at all with people that they don’t know personally. People may not be who they seem to be online.

As always, if you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to contact me

Containers For Change

Our wonderful P&C through the City of Stirling have set up the Containers for Change initiative for our school as a fundraising activity. As of next week two Container for Change bins will be located at the Hinderwell Road entrance near the Room 9 Heritage Building between 8:30 and 11am each morning for people who would like to donate their containers.

Please see below a description of the program and a list of eligible containers. It’s a great way to support your P&C and school community!

Containers for change

To help encourage more Western Australians to collect and return their beverage containers, Containers for Change will provide a 10-cent refund for each eligible beverage container that is returned.

The scheme aims to:

  • Increase recovery and recycling
  • Reduce litter and landfill
  • Provide opportunities for social enterprise and benefits for community organisations
  • Create opportunities for employment
  • Complement existing collection and recycling activities for recyclable waste.

Container for Change also provides an exciting fundraising opportunity for schools, local sports clubs, community groups, charities and worthwhile causes; the scheme will also create hundreds of jobs across Western Australia.

School Photos - Envelopes Coming Home Today

Personalised school photo order envelopes are coming home with the students today. These need to be handed to the photographer on your child's scheduled photo day, the school will not be collecting these beforehand.

  • Tuesday 27 October for Kindy G1, PP - Year 6
  • Thursday 29 October for Kindy G2 and Year 6 graduation class

Should you wish to have sibling photos taken, please pick up an envelope from the office.

AGC Assessment Workshop - Permission Slips due Monday 19 October 2020

Dear Parents

The Australian Girls Choir (AGC) will be conducting a free 30 minute assessment workshop during school hours on Monday 26 October 2020, for all interested girls from Pre-Primary through Year 6.  On the day, interested girls will participate in a workshop with on of AGC’s experienced tutors, involving simple rhythm, pitch and movement activities and games.  Following the workshop, they will send a personalised written report to parents of each girl who participated.  The workshops are designed to be fun and non-competitive and gives girls the opportunity to experience the sorts of activities AGC offer.  AGC are a proudly inclusive choir and offer all girls a position in one of the training levels of the AGC.

On Wednesday we distributed a flyer and permission slip to all girls from Pre-Primary through to Year 6.  The permission slip must be submitted in order to participate.

Please return the permission slip to the school this Monday, 19 October 2020, if interested in your daughter participating.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. It can be detected by a simple examination of the back.

The normal spine has three curves – one in the neck, on in the upper back and one in the lower back. These curves can be seen from the side, but when you look from behind the spine should appear straight. If the spine has a sideways curve, this is scoliosis.

An information leaflet about Scoliosis will be distributed to all year 6 students. Please read through the information provided and check your child for scoliosis as described in the leaflet.

If you have any concerns, please contact your General Practitioner.
