Term 1 - Week 6 (10th March 2023)

Dear St Mary's School Community

Values in Focus: Leadership

We set a positive example in the classroom, playground and community.

John: 4:5-42: Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at the well.

In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus uses the symbol of water to explain how important He was; when we drink ordinary water, soon we are thirsty again. But Jesus gives us more than ordinary water; He refreshes us spiritually, offering us eternal life. The Samaritan woman, a woman who was looked down upon in those times, recognised what is special in Jesus and she wanted that living water he was talking about. She is so convinced he is the Messiah that she left her bucket behind and runs off to tell others the good news. She won Jesus so many followers that he stayed with them for two days. She was a weed, a flower and a rebel, all rolled into one.

Sacramental Program

The Sacramental Program began on Thursday afternoon with a meeting for all students and their families who will be receiving the Sacraments this year. The preparation for these students continues this weekend as they make their commitment at either Saturday night or Sunday morning Mass.

Class News

Year Three/Four

This term is disappearing very quickly, and we have had a fantastic first 5 weeks in Year 3/4. During our Literacy lessons, we’ve learnt about warning stories and how to use quotation marks to enhance our characters. We have spent a lot of time expanding our vocabularies and adding interesting adverbs to our writing. In Maths, we’ve become place value experts and have played some fun games to practise our number fluency. We’re looking at sustainability in HASS and how we work together as a community in the Church.

Our Year Three students are busy getting ready for NAPLAN next week. Good luck to all the Year 3 and 5 students. Have a go, try your best & you’ll do amazing!

Faction Swimming Carnival

Friday 3rd March saw us complete our first major sporting event for the year with the students in Pre-Primary to Year 6 competing in the Faction Swimming Carnival.

The sun was shining, and it was perfect weather to be in the water.

The morning was a wonderful display of the swimming talents of our Year 3-6 Students who showed great determination, sportsmanship and Faction Spirit.

Our Pre-Primary to Year 2 students joined us for an afternoon of novelty games. It was so wonderful to see all of the students in the water having a great time, and to have our year 6 students helping out the younger students in these events.

Of course, events like these don’t happen without a lot support. Thank you to our St Mary’s Staff, the St Marys P&F for catering, the Merredin Swimming Club for the use of, and set up of the lane ropes and starter and our wonderful parent helpers.

Salvatorians once again showed their dominance in the pool coming out the victorious Faction with 566 points, Mackillop were in 2nd with 471 points, and close in 3rd place were St Joseph’s with 405 points.
