Burton Primary School Newsletter

Term 1, Week 5, 2023

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers

Why Schools Need VALUES

Every school has its own set of values. A school’s values are the personal characteristics, behaviours and qualities that each school community wants to highlight, emphasize and develop in its students and across the community.

Once decided, the values are used to:

1. Make choices about learning, curriculum and resources

2. Set school rules and improve behaviour

3. Talk with potential new families about what our school believes is important, and what the school stands for.

The current Burton school values were developed and decided way back in 1992. There are eight values in this original set: learning, cooperation, respect, teamwork, safety, fun, honesty, friendship.

The world has changed significantly since 1992. So it is time to review the existing set.

We now want to gather your ideas and important values. Today your child brought home a sheet for you to complete. Please use the sheet to identify your personal top 5 values and return the sheet to school.

Please note that the students will be doing a similar process in the coming weeks. Students will have the opportunity to have their ideas listened to and their choices included.

This information will be collated with the results of every other family, and Governing Council will then come up with a new set of values for Burton Primary for 2023 onwards.

Nut Awareness and Allergies

To raise awareness regarding severe allergies and to provide a safe learning environment for all members of the Burton Primary School community, the following management strategies are in place:

·       Parents and caregivers are requested not to send food to school that contain nuts. This includes peanut paste, Nutella, all nuts and nut cooking oils, as well as foods containing nuts

·       Students are encouraged not to share food.

·       Students are encouraged to wash hands after eating.

·       Staff supervising eating at lunchtime. When teachers notice nut product being bought into the classroom the identified child will be sent to the front office to eat their lunch.

·       All children are encouraged to wash their hands.

·       Staff are made aware of students and staff who have anaphylactic responses, including nut allergies.

·       Staff participating in first aid training in understanding and dealing with Anaphylaxis (severe allergic reactions).

·       School lunch providers complying with the Nut Awareness Policy.

·       Parents and caregivers being requested not to send boxes that have previously contained nut products, e.g. cereal boxes, muesli bars with nuts, cake boxes, biscuits.

Mobile Phones

If it is absolutely necessary for a student to bring a mobile phone to school it must be signed in at the school  office before school and collected by them at the end of the day after dismissal, (we take no responsibility for phones that have not been signed in).  This also relates to any watches which can make and receive phone calls/messages.

Lost and Found

All Lost and Found uniform items are now kept in "The Hive".  If your child has misplaced something, please check in there.

Please make sure to label all belongings in multiple places, this makes it much easier for our staff to be able to return the items to their owners.

Easter Raffle - Donations

This year, we are looking to do an Easter Raffle.  We are looking for donations from families and any businesses.  If you work for someone who you could ask for a donation from, or you would like to personally donate an item for the raffle, it would be much appreciated.

The more items we can get, the more prizes there will be on offer.

Please deliver any donations to the front office no later than Friday March 17th.

We will then send out more information regarding how you can purchase tickets for the raffle, this will all be done electronically.

Happy Retirement Maxine !!

Maxine has been at Burton School for almost 20 years, she started with us on a temporary basis in July 2003.

Over the years Maxine has had many roles at the school; specialized reading and maths programs; assisting on excursions, cleaning toilets, rescuing birds, getting hats off roofs, picking up rubbish to name but a few. Over the past years she has become our Archiving expert as well as Front Office/First Aid and generally our Girl Friday.

To say we are going to miss you Maxine is an understatement. We hope that you enjoy traveling in your retirement.
