Huskisson Public School

Husky Star Newsletter Week 5 Term 3 2020

From the School Leadership Team

As the cold wet weather of Winter continues, we would like to wish everyone a restful and cosy half term weekend. The term momentum has remained fast-paced as we all remain vigilant in our hygiene practices and keeping up to date with the latest news. Today we would like to ask you all to check-in with each other and continue to demonstrate the wonderful compassion that is the Huskisson Public School community.  We are all in this together!

On a much more pleasant note, it was wonderful for 5/6 Voyager to catch up with Alex today, through his dynamic robot. Both Alex and the students loved the chance to see each other and use the Alex robot.

Public Speaking Competition

In Week Two, all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 were given details about our school's internal public speaking competition. Students have had four weeks to prepare their speeches at home and in many occasions have also spent time in class preparing. In Weeks 6 & 7 we begin the next phase of this process. This is the two week period where the students say their speech in front of their class and receive feedback. Students then have the opportunity to take on board the comments before presenting their finished speech in Weeks 8 and 9. The finals will then be held in Week 10. Each class will be represented by a number of students from each year.

Good luck everyone on finalising your speech this weekend!

COVID testing

After the NSW DOE announcement regarding requirement to COVID test all symptomatic students and staff,  a number of saved appointments each day have been reserved at the Sanctuary Point Respiratory Clinic to be able to provide easy access to appointments at short notice.

"If at all possible, please book your COVID-19 testing appointment in advance, through the hotdoc.com.au website - search "Sanctuary Point Respiratory Clinic". Alternatively you can call us on 0478 799 400 during opening hours. We are open 0900-1700 Monday to Friday and 0900-1230 Saturdays. "

The team at Southern Pathology has also confirmed they will process swabs on a daily basis including over the weekend to make sure the turnaround is as fast as possible.

We will provide each person a certificate at the time of their attendance confirming that they have been tested. The patient or parent will receive confirmation of a negative result directly from the laboratory by SMS, and can use this message along with the testing certificate as evidence to the School that they have completed the testing process.

In all cases, anyone with symptoms is encouraged to stay away from school or work until they have been symptom-free for at least 24 hours.

2020 School Fundraiser

This week your child will have received a ticket in our 2020 fundraiser to purchase. This year we have been donated a genuine indigenous round jersey worn by Tyson Frizell from the Dragons Football Club and framed by Huskisson Framing.

We are asking that each family purchase their ticket and return their $10 towards our 2020 fundraising event. You are able to phone the school to select your own lucky number or mark on your return slip that you are happy to receive a randomly generated number. Of course you are able to purchase more than one ticket to increase your chances of winning.

This fundraiser guarantees $3000 to go towards our school fundraising projects. We would like to thank you in advance for your support in this project and ask you to help get the word around other people who may be interested.

Regards,

Stage 2- Rocket Maths

Each day students practise their times tables, they work with a partner and then individually try to beat their own goals. The students recite their times tables to a partner for two minutes. They then have half a minute to write as many times tables as they can, beating their previous times.

Look at the wonderful work our Math-e-Magicians can do!

Library News Week 5

It’s Science Week and budding scientists are all around our school now, thanks to all of Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 and their teachers!  This week students really put their scientific skills to work in the library when they had to make some really close observations of our insects and sort them by features. All this hands-on learning supports classroom themes this term by looking at and presenting information in a variety of ways.  Soon the kids will be documenting their learning using multimedia tools. Watch this space!

Thanks to Zac McGill and his family for safely capturing some cool caterpillars and leaf insects to share with the class.  Zac also brought in a specimen of a beautiful Australian Ulysses Butterfly for all to see.  We could not believe how brilliantly blue the wings were.

Tech Tuesday for Stage 2 is going really well and I hope to share some cool animated Lego videos with everyone soon.  I was impressed to see that when the stats came through from Typing.com that some of our kids are really leaping ahead with their typing skills. This means they are accessing their account at home by using their DET student login and password.  I am hoping that more students do this so that their typing skills become automatic.

Lastly, it is with much pleasure that I was able to share with Stage 3 the newly released Shoalhaven City Council video, “Walking on Country”.  This timely release fits in well with our connection to county lessons in the library and even featured Raymond Timbery, one of our Coolendel camp leaders! If you have not watched it yet, follow this link for a special treat.

Thank you for sharing these clips, Mrs Hanson. They are very powerful indeed!

From the Garden

Thanks to the rain and some predicted warmth there seems to be a shift in the season and it won’t be long until summer is on our minds. With that said, the students from Year 5 and Year 6 were active in the garden this week making some investments in the garden. Some of the sugar snap peas that had past their expiration were fed to the eager chickens and compost was scattered to freshen up the soil for the summer crops. One group of students began work on constructing a tomato trellis for our tomato seedlings. Students fed the citrus trees along the rainbow fence, and pulled out weeds in the vegetable patch.

Mrs Norris

Thank you Mrs Norris for leading the work and learning across our school gardens!

If I Were Principal For A Day - K/1 Moona Moona

Our news topic this week was 'if I were principal for a day' and we had some pretty cute insights:

If I were Principal for a day, I would:

  • give everyone their pen licence and have Dominos pizza for lunch (Chaise)
  • give everyone ice-cream and have no school uniform (Sophia)
  • build a pool and have water pistols (Jackson)
  • wear our pyjamas to school (Mikka)
  • Instead of handwriting we could use our hands in the sand (Hallie)
  • chocolate cake for everyone (Chanelle)
  • go to lunch early and have a mufti day (Annabeth)
  • have donuts and provide lunch to everyone so the parents don't have to worry about packing lunches and they can get a sleep in that day (Paige)
  • have a class party, dress up as animals and talk about animals all day (Michaella)
  • watch Star Wars all day and buy a Light Sabre for every student (Aiden)
  • have a pool (with a fence to keep it safe for everyone) and candy and cake for everyone (Cecily)
  • give Mrs Rosskelly a day off (Mrs Rosskelly)*

* last one is totally made up.

Mrs Jessica Rosskelly

I just love some of these ideas! Annabeth and Mikka - you have my vote!!! Let's see what we can do about it....
