SUTTON PUBLIC SCHOOL

November 4th - Week 4

From the Principal

It is hard to believe we are already at the end of Week 4, Term 4. Students and staff have appreciated the opportunity to sink back into routines following the busyness of our 150th celebrations. Clare has been away most of this week working and learning alongside colleagues at the NSW Principals’ conference in Sydney. Denise, David and I have enjoyed keeping Clare’s seat warm and look forward to her return next week.

Next week, we look forward to our SRC fundraiser where students will be dressing up as something they would like to be when they grow up. We can’t wait to see all of the crafty, creative and aspirational outfits that arrive on Tuesday, hopefully there’ll be some future teachers in the mix. On Tuesday, we will also be acknowledging students who have gone above and beyond earning a Sutton Sovereign. This celebration means that assembly will commence at 2:30pm to ensure we are out on time for buses. Students from Stage 3 will be meeting with their peers from Bungendore and Gundaroo on Thursday to learn about the must have skills for high school. We are so appreciative of Bungendore High School for hosting this event.

Acknowledgement of Country

We are really excited to welcome Matthew Fullerton, Aboriginal and Wellbeing Officer, back to our school in Week 6 of this term. He will be working with our Aboriginal students and a peer of their choice to write an Acknowledgement of Country to be used by the school. We are looking forward to championing student voice through this process and ensuring our acknowledgements represent our school context. We love being part of the Sutton community and feel lucky to live, learn and work on Ngunnawal and Ngambri Country.

Preparing for 2023 - staff changes and student enrolments

Congratulations to Miss Gemma Hawkins on her permanent appointment to Queanbeyan West Public School commencing Term 1, 2023.  Miss Hawkins has made a wonderful contribution to Sutton Public School in her role as relieving Assistant Principal and Stage 3 class teacher.  She will be greatly missed but we congratulate her on her promotion and wish her all the best at her new school.

Next year we will welcome Ms Erin Casey to the executive team at Sutton Public School in a new, non-teaching executive role,  Assistant Principal Curriculum and Instruction. Ms Casey will join us from Term 1 2023.  We will keep you informed of any further changes in staffing towards the end of the year as we finalise student numbers and class structure for 2023.

We ask that any family moving on to new locations or educational settings notify us as soon as possible.

Assembly - early start

Our next whole school assembly will be held next Tuesday, 8th November in the school hall from 2:30pm. Guests are reminded to check in using the NSW Services App on arrival.  Masks and hand sanitiser are available at the entrance to our hall.

Book Fair!

Our popular Scholastic Book Fair will be held once again from November Wednesday 9th - Friday 11th, and Wednesday 15th - Friday 18th.

How the Fair works:

  • Students will browse the fair in their library class time, or before school 9am-9.20am & after school 3.10pm - 3.30pm (parents/carers are invited to browse before and after school with their child)
  • Students will complete a 'wishlist' (to be handed out in class)
  • After 'consulting' and discussing the wishlist with their families, payment will be made online to Scholastic. Payment can be made whilst browsing - meaning you can take the book the moment you are there!
  • Students will bring their wishlist back in with payment receipt where selected books are collected from the fair

*Books will be ordered if that item sells out

This event allows our students to choose books for themselves. Most books are by Australian authors and often new releases.

Selective high school placement process for placement in Year 7 in 2024

Selective high school placement process for placement in Year 7 in 2024

Selective high schools cater for academically gifted students of high potential who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic standard. Selective high schools help these students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability and by using specialised teaching methods.

Applications for Year 7 entry to selective high schools in 2024 open on 18 October 2022. Applications will close on 16 November 2022. The due date is strictly observed. Requests for late applications will be approved only under very specific and well-documented circumstances.

Find information about the application and placement process and apply online at:  https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7.

All candidates are required to sit the Selective High School Placement Test to be held on Thursday 4 May 2023.

The online application dashboard enables parents to log in to make updates and add attachments even after an application is submitted. Parents also communicate directly with the Selective Education Unit through the system’s messages feature.

Parents having difficulty completing or submitting an application, should contact the Selective Education Unit through their application dashboard or, if unable to do so, by email ssu@det.nsw.edu.au.

Last day of Term 4 is Friday 16 December 2022

As we near the end of the year, I want to thank you for your ongoing support and notify you of a date change for the last day of Term 4 classes.

Students will now finish school on Friday 16 December 2022.

This is due to an additional School Development Day announced for staff across NSW public schools.

School Development Days allow our staff to participate in professional learning that was put on hold due to COVID-19 staffing pressures and plan ahead for 2023 to ensure we meet the needs of our students.

With this change, we ask that you arrange alternative care for your child on Monday 19 December.

While there will be no classes on Monday 19 December, if you cannot arrange alternative care for your child, we will provide minimal supervision at school.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school.

Year 6 Farewell - Information and Parent Helpers

We are so excited to announce that the preparation for the Year 6 Farewell has commenced. With the ease of Covid-19 restrictions, we will resume past farewell traditions. This means that there will be some changes to catering and increased participation for parent volunteers. Year 5 parents are encouraged to return the slip attached to this note to volunteer their assistance. We hope to make the night as magical as possible. I will be in contact with parent volunteers as soon as possible to ensure the evening is a success.

All About High School Activity Morning

We are enjoying working with Bungendore High as we prepare to transition students for 2023 and beyond. Melissa Giddens, the Principal of Bungendore High School, and her staff have organised an information day for all students in Stage 3. Students from Sutton Public School have been invited to attend the event on Thursday, 10th November.

Bungendore High School have kindly organised a bus for the event so there will be no cost to parents or need for individuals to be transported independently. Students will need to be at school by 8:50am to catch the bus to Bungendore Public School.

All three students competed across the three days of competition in some very horrible weather, competing against schools from ACT and NSW.

Ryan competed in numerous Show jumping events on the Friday and Saturday and numerous Sporting events including Western Bending, Flags, Keyhole and Barrels. Ryan placed in all sporting events, winning some beautiful broad sashes.

Sarah competed in show jumping on Friday, placing 6th in her age group. Sarah also competed in sporting on Saturday, placing in all events. On Sunday, Sarah and Monkey competed in Show Riding winning the following:
