Week 9

Acting Principal Update

Welcome to Week 9!

As you are all aware Sandy Cartwright will be on leave for the next 2 weeks. During this time we will have some relief staff working to take on some duties. Next week we have arranged for our teachers to have collaborative planning time together so we will have our usual relief in to cover some classes.

PUBLIC HOLIDAY: As you are all aware next Thursday has been declared a National Day of mourning for her Majesty the Queen. There will be no school on this day.

STUDENT LED CONFERENCES

Our Student led conferences began last night and it was wonderful to see many families sharing in their child’s learning journey. If you have missed out and/or would like to have a longer conversation, please get in contact with your child’s teacher and organise another time.

NAPLAN: Our individual reports for NAPLAN have just arrived. We will be providing you with a copy of these at the Student Led Conferences. If you will not be attending, you have the option to pick them up from the front office or they will be posted out on Friday.

BOOKWEEK PARADE: We have a fantastic assembly planned for this Friday in the muster area. We would love to see you join us. The word is out that many teachers will also be dressing up. There will be fantastic prizes for each year level. We also have prizes for families and teachers. Please join in the enthusiasm and excitement.

Have a lovely week.

Class Points

Muster is held at Alawa after each recess and lunch break - this gives us an opportunity for everyone to settle from playtime, share any celebrations and work on consistency of messages and expectation.

Each week we allocate class points during Muster time recognising those students who were ready and waiting to go back to class calmly and quietly after break times. The winning class from each 3 weeks will receive ice-blocks from Ms Cartwright and get to choose 5 songs that will play before our bells for the following 3 weeks.

The class with the most points in Week 8 of Term 3 was....Year 1 Bullock with 129 points!!!

House Points

Students at Alawa receive raffle tickets [house points] for their attitude and behaviour in the playground and out the front of the school at the end of the day. These are then counted on a Friday along with the points for students in full uniform, wearing house shirts etc.  At the end of each term we also include the points earnt through the recycling project and water bottle checks.

In Week 8 of Term 3 Goyder was ahead of Finnis and Manton with 2525 points!!!

In the lead for the year we still have Finnis with 79386 points!!!

Attendance

Primary School Average for Week 8 Term 3: 91.32%

It is still of concern how many students are missing school each week.

The class with the highest attendance for Week 8: Year 4/5 Griffin with 96.92%!!! Amazing job!!!

In the lead for the term we have.... Year 3 Block with 93.85%!!!

Lates

Arriving late for school has a significant impact on your child’s learning and engagement in the education program.

There were 34 late arrivals in Transition—Year 6 in Week 8 Term 3!

For Week 8 the class with the least lates was: Year 2 Ward with 0 lates!!!

In the lead for the term we have...2 Ward with 8 late arrivals each!

Recycling

Alawa Recycling is not only an important part of our fundraising activities here at Alawa with all proceeds going directly back into the farm, but also a vital step in helping us achieve the goal of creating a more sustainable farm and garden program.

Items can be deposited into the house bags in the back car park and  each item earns a point for each house.

Classroom news - ART & PE

ART

In art this term, all students have focused on creating class displays for our recent performance night. Transition students created Australian windchimes, Year 1 Wilson created lions to represent Ghana, Year 1 Bullock created poi balls for New Zealand, Year 2 Ward made Vietnamese lanterns and fans and Year 2 Riley Smith created South Pacific leis and tropical birds. The Year 3-6 classes spent weeks applying paper to balloons to make hanging paper mache displays. Their designs were then painted onto their balloon, representing countries and geographical areas including The Caribbean, South Africa, Greece, India and China. A very big thank you to Steph Cockfield, Mr Dean and all the class teachers and students who proudly helped install the artworks for the night.

PE

Year 3-6 students have been learning about AFL, hockey and tennis this term, with Year 1 and 2 students also doing activities from the Kiddo program. In AFL students learnt the key parts to a handball, a drop punt and other specialised kicks such as torpedoes and snaps. Students have been practicing tennis under the muster area focusing on forehand and backhand hits, whilst also learning about how important hand eye coordination is when playing tennis! We have been using the new tennis nets thanks to the Federally Funded Sporting Schools Grant [coordinated by Ms Tamra].

We have two gala days on the last day of term and wish our tennis and volleyball teams well!

Jen White [ART & PE Teacher]

Sporting Schools Grant

Due to success with the Sporting Schools grant, enthusiastic students in Transition – Year 2 have had the opportunity to participate in 4 x afterschool hockey sessions, at no cost.

A representative from Hockey NT ran the sessions.

Students learnt:

-about the hockey stick: the flat v’s round side & correct grip

-pushing and hitting skills

-safety

-fun team games to put this into practise.

Well done to the 23 students who have learnt new and  improved their skills!

The official hockey season is almost over, but you may like to join a club next year when it resumes.

Preschool news

Preschool is full of budding Master Chefs! Cooking experiences teach children how food is prepared and cooked and how it contributes to health and wellbeing. Children collect ingredients such as eggs, herbs and vegetables from our weekly Farm lessons to create delicious and nutritious recipes.

Cooking encourages children to work collaboratively, develop self-help skills and knowledge about healthy eating. Children enjoy the responsibility of following instructions in a recipe to create something special. So far we have made bread, mini quiches and scones with rosella jam!

Farm news

Now that we are into the build up all students are learning what the build up is and how this season affects our native plants and animals. They love the story of how the yellow flowing Kapok seeds signal to the freshwater crocodile that it is time to dig up its eggs because they are hatching.

Transition have finished their farm treasure hunts and are now learning about different bird homes. They will soon to be building their own. Year 1 have made a stunning rock mosaic for the new Zen Garden outside the kitchen and there is another mosaic on the way. Year 2 have completed one of 2 beautiful Bali style wind chimes made out of farm grown bamboo. You may have seen it hanging in the tree on the concert night. Years 3/4 are working on growing and harvesting produce and making wicking garden beds. Year 4/5 are collecting goods for the weekly market stall and sorting the recycling of cans, bottles etc to help bring money back into the farm. A collection of year 5/6 students are working on making a range of things for the farm such as a Bail hut for chickens as well as a bee hive and possum homes. Other 5/6 students continue to work hard on garden and animal care.

Thanks to those parents who have been coming to help during class times. Your assistance is very much appreciated and your children also love to see you there.

We would really love donations of any outdoor paint you may have lying around for our craft projects and pool fencing to protect our fruit trees from the goats.

Kitchen fun with the VIP’s

The groups who didn’t go on camp had a great couple of days in the kitchen.

On Thursday they were given a variety of noodles- rice, wheat, Singapore, ramen, egg, macaroni and spaghetti noodles and they had to cook a yummy meal.

We had some very creative food cooked- a laksa, a healthy vegetarian pasta, a tomato pasta, a stir fry and egg omelets filled with noodle and salad. One group also made a delicious batch of choc chip biscuits.

On Friday they made yummy savoury scrolls. Some groups did pizza scrolls and some did cheesy vegemite ones. Misha made the same choc chip biscuits from the day before to share with everyone.
