Mansfield Primary School - Buddy Day 24/03/2023 by Tamim Shahwan (G6 Media Team)

On the 24th of May, the Mansfield Primary School organised a Whole School Buddy Day. The Prep and Grade 4’s went to Mirimbah Park, Grade 1 and 5’s went to Jamieson River Park, Grade 3’s to Sheepyard Flat and Grade 2 and 6’s went to Carters Road. Buddy Day is a day for students in different year levels to spend time and bond with each other and share knowledge, promote confidence, and show leadership skills.

The Grade 2 and 6 day at Carters Road was filled with lots of fun activities to do outdoors. The first two activities were organised by Land Care where we learnt about what difference insects we may find in the river and then got the opportunity to walk through the water to find some. The water was very refreshing and cold and everyone had fun finding different insects that were living in the water.

The next Land Care activity after a break was an environmental talk about how polluting the river effects fish and marine life and it showed that pollutants such as paint, plastic fertilizer and many more substances harms marine life. We understand the impact pollution has on the environment and I hope we stop the pollution of the rivers and oceans across the world.

Next, we went on a short walk and did an activity around trust and communication. We got into groups of 2-3. One person moved around playing a drum for all the students, and within each group, one person was blindfolded, and the other used their voice to instruct the blindfolded partner on how to find and get to the person playing the drum. This required trust in the person instructing to make sure they were aware of their surroundings.

Finally, we did boat building which was an activity enjoyed by all. We had to find natural things on the ground like sticks, rocks, bark, and fallen leaves and whatever else you can find, to build a boat with. You had to use your creative skills and your prior knowledge to know what will float, and what will help the boat look and float better.

I asked some students what their favourite thing about Buddy Day was.

Evie Jacob from 2C said her favourite thing was “Everything!”

William Hann from 6B said he was “Making so many memories here. And it was just incredibly fun.”

Ashton Prosser from 6C said he loved “Spending time with his buddies.”

It was safe to say that Buddy Day at MPS was a success and we hope this tradition continues.

Emergency Services Expo – Jamieson Recreation Reserve

This is a great event to encourage local students to attend during school holidays.  I’m asking if you could share this with your school community through either the newsletter, school apps, etc.

It’s time to band together and support some of our volunteers and other Emergency Services.  This is an event that may not be repeated, don’t miss out on this rare opportunity!

https://fb.watch/jrFaSimg90/

Often small communities like ours don’t get these opportunities so I am proud to coordinate this for the community.  This has been planned for school holidays and on a long weekend to be inclusive to our permanent land owners, our semi-permanent, and the children of surrounding areas. Admission is FREE!

I’d like to extend an invitation to you all and encourage you to spread the word amongst your family and friends.   I look forward to you joining us.

-The Expo comprised a range of agencies (over 20 of them) getting together to actively engagement with different stakeholders of the community to educate, build community resilience and relationships, promote career pathways, and more.

-The event will be live broadcast by ‘Mansfield Radio’.

-Activities and giveaways for kids, and education messages for landowners, tourists and the general public.

-This will give attendees a better understanding on what resources are available, the role of the different agencies, preparation ideas for someone to prepare themselves prior an emergency, and what to do in response to an emergency.

-At the event there will be static displays with a range of responder’s equipment and vehicles, food onsite (pizza store, ice-cream truck, fundraising BBQ), operational personnel from each agency, and at 2pm a live ‘interagency Rescue demonstration’.

-‘Rescue Demonstration’, will be narrated to demonstrate the coordination and role of agencies, priorities of each agency, the procedures and skills of the different agencies, etc.
