Gatton State School

Term 1 2020 / No.2 13th February 2020

Principal's Report

Thank you and farewell!

Being a teacher is one of the best jobs anyone can have.  Being a school principal is even better!

I began teaching in Killarney S P-10 S in 1985 and my career took me to Mt Isa SHS, Hughenden P-12, Winton K-12, Millmerran S P-10 S, Pittsworth SHS, Rangeville SS (Toowoomba) and Gatton SS.  The last five schools as principal.  I have enjoyed each school and each school community I have been part of.

I continue to enjoy being a teacher, but now it is as principal.  I am sometimes asked, “do I miss the classroom?”  The honest answer is yes, but I balance it with my belief that each year, I influence a whole school of students in their learning – not just my class.

In 2012, I was appointed as principal at GSS.  I found the school community welcoming and keen to see if there was to be any “major’ changes.  I was asked how long am I staying? Over time, staff soon realised I had an opinion on most things!  However, I prided myself on learning with students, their families and staff what it was to be an inclusive school; how we could work together to strengthen our curriculum; and the importance of celebrating our many successes…..and I stayed over eight years!

My employment in education finishes on Friday the 14th February, but I know that my involvement in education will continue and my learning will continue.  I am one of those people who wakes up each morning happy to go to school.  This is because I really enjoy talking to kids!

I have been able to focus on the schools I have worked in because I have had the support and understanding of my wife and children needed to successfully lead a school community.   Thank you to the students and families who have been part of the Gatton adventure.  My thanks and praise goes to an excellent staff (not just teachers, but all support staff) at GSS.  My very best wishes to all of you.

Thank you

2020 Enrolments

2020 Enrolments

As I have explained previously, the student enrolment count on Day 8 determines our staffing and much of our funding for the year. Due to the inconvenience the wet weather in North Qld and the corona virus has caused some families in Queensland, the final count is now taken on February 13.

Presently we have 470 students enrolled at GSS.  A warm welcome to our 81 new students and their families to our school. This includes 56 preps who are enjoying their first year of full time education.

Some of us enjoy statistics.  For history of enrolments at GSS, 1993 is the earliest I can easily gain data.

Keeping Students Safe

Families are reminded that the drop off zone outside the school is for drop off only.  Adults who leave their car unattended or park there waiting for their child at 3pm face a traffic fine.  Police regularly patrol our school zone.

Gatton State School is Proudly a PBL School

U

sing a whole-school approach to promote positive behaviour across a school is the most effective way to develop a safe and supportive learning environment.

In a whole-school approach, the school community (students, parents and school staff) work together to establish the expectations for behaviour. The expectations are simple, clear and explicit.

Parents and the wider community play an important role in creating a safe and supportive school environment. Parents are valuable partners in supporting the school and their child's learning and behaviour. Parents have valuable insights about how to best support their child's behaviour and learning.

We are extending an expression of interest for people to join the PBL committee and attend 4-6 meetings per year.  We are looking for a commitment over time to be involved in the selection of focus behaviours, rewards days for the end of term and assisting with the running of our events.

If you are interested in joining our committee please leave your contact details with the front office staff.

Behaviour of the Fortnight

Each fortnight we have a specific focus on a selected behaviour. Over these two weeks we are focusing on

“I follow staff directions”.

Lessons devoted to teaching our students what this looks like can be observed in many areas across our school.  At home you can support your child’s learning by having a conversation about the fortnightly behaviour.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Mrs Scott, Mrs Dixon, Mrs Althaus and Mrs Frederiksen’s Classroom

In term 1 and 4 PE classes (except PREP in Term 1) are at the swimming pool.  Like all classes in the school, we work within our school expectations: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible.

Swimming has commenced for all classes from Year 1 to Year 6.  Whilst only 6 lessons are indicated on the form, extra lessons may be offered if catch up days (for bad weather etc) are not required.

Please note that there will be no swimming on the following dates due to swimming carnivals by other schools or for other reasons listed:

·         Tuesday 3rd March  (DD Secondary Carnival)

·         Wednesday 6th March  (DD Primary Carnival)

·         Tuesday 10th March (Year 6 camp)

·         Wednesday 11th March (Year 6 camp)

·         No classes will swim in the last week of term however the senior swimming carnival will be on Friday 3rd April (last day of term 1)

Students of families who pay the bulk swimming payment, will not miss any of their paid lessons as this is a 10 week term and these missed swimming days have been taken into account.  Please note however, there will be no refund given for students who are absent from lessons, as the fee is based on the overall cost of providing staff for all lessons.

In previous swimming lessons we have had some students who come without a sun shirt.  Education Queensland’s Sun Safety Strategy makes it compulsory for primary school children in all state schools to wear sun shirts or T-shirts during swimming lessons.  Please ensure your child has a shirt before their next lesson.

It is also compulsory for all children to wear goggles each week.  Goggles allow students to focus on their stroke (arms, legs and breathing), instead of the unpleasant and distracting feeling of water in their eyes. Caps must be worn by students with hair that can reach their eyes.  Please ensure these items are named as often they are left behind and we cannot identify the owner.  The school does not supply sun shirts, caps and goggles.

Staff will provide assistance in and out of the pool, where required, for all year levels.  We do not require assistance at the pool unless requested.  Parents/carers sitting at the edge of the pool during their child’s swimming lesson can be quite distracting for the child/children.  Parents are welcome to come to the pool during the lessons but we ask that you remain in the covered area near the canteen so students focus on their lesson and not find an audience!  Also, we like primary age children dressing themselves. Mum and Dad coming into the dressing room can be embarrassing for some students so please remain in the seating area.

Don’t forget our Senior Swimming Carnival will be held in the last week of this term, Friday 3rd April.

Friday Morning Sport Term 1.

This term students in year 4-6 participate in Friday morning sport. Children are divided into teams from a variety of sports.  In Term 1 students can play Softball, Cricket, Basketball, T-Ball, Kanga, Newcombe and general games.

This term sport will be played in the mornings in order to avoid the sometimes extreme afternoon heat.  Games will be played from approximately 9:45 to 10:50am with travel time required in addition to this.

Softball, T-Ball, Cricket, Newcombe and Kanga are graded so that they have an inter-school and intra-school component. A draw is created so that a number of the children can play against other schools including Withcott, OLGC, Peace and Lake Clarendon.

Teams are sometimes required to travel during the term for games.  When teams play in town (eg. Cahill Park or Redbacks) the bus price is $4.00, when a team travels out of town (eg. Withcott, Lake Clarendon etc) the price is $6.50Note: Every effort is made to have teams play only two or three out of town days in the draw.

Teams that travel in term 1 are:

Softball A and B                     T-Ball A and B

Cricket A                                 Newcombe A and B (possibly)

Kanga A and B

Important note about messages to students

It can be difficult for office staff to contact children during sport. Only ask the office to contact your child in an emergency.  Please ensure you tell the office staff what sport and team your child is in.

Some sports also have a weekly court hire cost.

Basketball:                    $1.00

*(Basketball is played at the Lockyer Valley Sports Centre.  Students walk to this venue)

Overview of draw:

31st January                               Gatton Team Selections
