Rozelle Public School Newsletter

TERM TWO WEEK SIX

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Rozelle is a place where Aboriginal children learned, played and celebrated their culture for thousands of years on this beautiful, natural land. As we learn, play and celebrate together on this land, we honour the Wangal people of the Eora nation and pay our respects to elders both past, present and emerging.

RECONCILIATION WEEK 2022

This week began with our Reconciliation Week assembly that had been organised by Mrs Horton and Miss McLaughlin. National Reconciliation Week is a time to learn about shared histories, cultures and achievements, and explore how we can all contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. During the assembly, we were treated to performances from our Stage Two and Three Choirs, including our National Anthem sung in Dharug language. The theme for Reconciliation Week is ‘Be Brave. Make Change.’ and this message was displayed in a beautiful artwork created by students and Miss Cole. Thank you to all parents who attended this special assembly.

BE BRAVE! MAKE CHANGE!

COVID, FLU AND OTHER NASTIES!

Winter arrived this week with blustery and cold conditions. It is anticipated that the next 4 weeks of term could see a spike in illnesses due to colds, flu and circulating COVID. Please note the following:

  • If a member of your family tests positive for COVID, your child can still come to school on the provision that they have a negative RAT result each day (5 consecutive days).

  • If your child tests positive, they are off school for a week. Please notify the school and register the positive result via the Service NSW App.

  • Additional RAT tests will be sent home with students. Please keep an eye out for them.

  • Please do not send your child to school if they are unwell. This week there have been a number of students presenting to the office with very heavy colds and headaches.

  • If your child is unwell, you will receive a call from our administration team asking you to come and collect them. This is for their own comfort and wellbeing.

And finally…winter illnesses don't just impact students, teachers also can be struck by the winter nasties. There may be occasions when programs are disrupted and classes split due to high teacher absenteeism.

SEMESTER ONE REPORTS

Teachers are currently finalising Semester One student achievement reports. These reports will be sent home in the final week of term and will include achievement in English, Mathematics and other Key Learning Areas. They will also include a personalised general comment which will reference future learning directions for your child. Over the coming weeks, Mrs Svinos and I look forward to reading the reports and reviewing student progress.

ZONE CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL

Congratulations to our school cross country team who put in a fantastic performance at this week's Balmain PSSA carnival. The freezing wind made conditions exceptionally challenging for our runners at Jubilee Park yet there were some outstanding individual performances.

  • Davin Carty - 1st 10 years boys

  • Eleanor Graham - 1st 11 years girls

  • Lily Graham - 2nd 11 years girls

  • Leo Simmons - 2nd 12 years boys

  • Jonty Hickton - 2nd 11 years boys

  • Scarlett Sarah - 3rd 8/9 years girls

  • Oscar Elliott - 3rd 8/9 years boys

  • Eloise Rolfe - 4th 10 years girls

I would like to thank Miss Rolland and Mrs Singleton for their coordination of the school runners. Our very own Mr Kwok took on the added responsibility for coordinating this year’s Balmain School’s Zone Carnival. Without teachers volunteering to take on additional responsibilities, zone sporting carnivals such as this are unable to take place. Well done Mr Kwok.

KEEPING UP TO DATE

Rozelle is a busy school with many events, activities and programs on offer. Sometimes it can be hard for busy parents to keep across everything. The following platforms offer parents current information and calendar dates.

  • The fortnight newsletter published on SkoolBag
  • The calendar, found on the SkoolBag App
  • The calendar on the school website

ENROL NOW FOR 2023

Do you have a child starting school next year?  Are you looking to enrol your child in preschool for 2023?  Now is the time to get your enrolment forms submitted for Kindy and Preschool 2023. DJAMU JUNIOR PROGRAM

The Art Gallery of NSW are running the Djamu Junior Program and have invited our senior Aboriginal students to visit the gallery for 3 sessions. While at the gallery, students have the opportunity to view key works by Aboriginal artists, meet the artist and create their own artworks. Yesterday was their first visit and Ana G, Amalia C and Ashley M, met Uncle Badger Bates as he showed them his work, Barkandji Canoe, on display in the Grand Court of the gallery. Thank you to Mrs Horton for organising this opportunity for our First Nations students.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS

At Rozelle we are very proud of our attendance rates. Research tells us there is a clear correlation between student attendance and the achievement of quality academic and health outcomes. Above 95% is our expected student attendance rate. If your child is away from school it is essential that you contact the school to explain their absence. This can be done via a phone call, email or note to either the office or your child’s teacher. The Department of Education policy states that any absence should be explained within 7 days of your child being away from school.

Well done!

Boys Vocal Workshop

Nine fabulous Rozelle students enjoyed singing gospel warm-ups and 3 part harmonies with boys from Years 5 to 12 in Sydney's premiere recording studio, Trackdown. In between concentrating on following conductor Stuart, recording and filming a video, they mixed games of handball, snacks and making new friends. Students toured the massive sound desk booth to see a professional sound engineer at work. Special guest and mentor Arlo, from The Voice, fronted a supportive and encouraging environment where everyone could sing and create. Two Rozelle boys, Vincente and Sammy dazzled performing solo items in a Showcase concert. Congratulations to Jonah G, Haylem Y, Connal M, Aiden P, Connor F, Vicente G, Sammy B, Leo G and Madden L for their enthusiasm and commitment.

Preschool 2023 Enrolment

Applications for enrolment into the preschool program have now opened. All the necessary information and application forms are available on the school website at  https://rozelle-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/ or from the school office. Children are eligible for enrolment in preschool classes from the beginning of the school year if they turn four years of age before July 31 of that year. Applications close at 3pm on Friday 1 July.

There is no priority for the order in which enrolments are received by the office. The Preschool Placement panel, consisting of the Principal, the President of the P&C and one of our preschool teachers, considers all applications in accordance with the priorities of the Department of Education and Communities' Preschool Enrolment Policy and the Rozelle Public School Preschool Enrolment and Fee Policy.

Election Day BBQ and Cake Stall

The P&C was pleased to supporting the fundraising efforts of Year 6 (sausage sizzle) and the Rozelle Band Program (cake stall) on Election Day last week. Congratulations on a successful days trading, with each stall raising a great sum toward the Year 6 Farewell and the 2022 Band Camp. Great work was done by all the parents and students involved who ensured all those hungry voters left Rozelle Public School satisfied!

Colour Fun Follow Up

Congratulations Rozelle, our results from the Colour Run held last month makes us the highest fundraising school for 2022 so far – well done!

Thank you to all the families that completed their prize incentive orders on time. The order for the school has been placed and should arrive very soon. Students will receive their incentive prizes at school. After event management costs and prize fulfilment expenses, the P&C has received $43,000 to go towards facility and resource upgrades at RPS.

Trivia Night Success

What a fantastic night of trivia and laughs was had at the RPS Trivia Night last Saturday. Over 180 attendees battled it out to see who would be crowned Rozelle’s trivia masters. Even our quiz master Simon Whale has declared the Rozelle Public School trivia night the highlight of his working year. It was wonderful to see so many parents having fun back on school grounds again – and over $7,000 was raised through ticket sales, raffles and bonus point purchases.

Congratulations to the winning teams:

#1 Mordor North

#2 Quizmasters

#3 Dennis Denuto Fan Club

An honourable mention to The Faculty team – your “raw score” (without buying bonus points) had you in 3rd place. A dishonourable mention to Erica’s Homecoming/Better Late Than Pregnant team who paid to have points taken OFF their score to ensure they came dead last and ‘won’ the wooden spoon hamper.

The P&C thanks all our volunteers who helped make this night a success – those who sourced prizes, wrapped hampers, set up tables and chairs and marked score sheets. A special shout out to Carolyn Maguire who booked our host and set up both the online event booking and raffle draw  – thank you for all your hard work behind the scenes!

Thank you to the local businesses who were generous sponsors and provided wonderful raffle prizes, lucky door prizes and goodies for our hampers. We also received generous donations from within the school community.

Our lucky raffle winners took home these amazing prizes – congratulations!!

WANTED: Graphic Design Guru

Can you help out the P&C with some ad hoc design skills to help promote our activities? We’d love some expert skills to create event posters, sponsor thank you certificates and content for social media, etc. Time commitment would only be a few hours per term – please email   rozellepublicschool@pandcaffiliate.org.au if you can help out.

Uniform Shop

Please note that due to a number of wholesale price increases in recent months, the retail price of our Fair Trade Organic Polo shirts has been adjusted to $32 each. The uniform shop is managed and staffed by volunteers and operates on a non-profit basis to ensure school uniform items are supplied at the lowest cost possible to the school community. This price increase was unavoidable.

The Uniform Shop is looking for volunteers to join a working committee to look at all aspects of the uniform shop, including rationalisation of existing range and potential uniform changes. Email the team on rozelleuniformshop@gmail.com to be involved.

The Uniform Shop continues to supply online orders placed via Flexischools. Any size exchanges or returns for credit may be left at the front office and the volunteers will adjust for you when the online orders are filled on Fridays. The shop also opens on Friday mornings between 8.45am and 9.30am for cash or credit card sales of our new and second hand items. Any enquiries should be made via rozelleuniformshop@gmail.com

Thank you to our 2021/2021 sponsor Cindy Kennedy from the McGrath Team Balmain for your financial support of our P&C events. Looking for your dream home? Please have a look at her latest listings. https://www.mcgrath.com.au/agent/245-cindy-kennedy
