Rawlinson Primary School News

No. 11 – 28th May 2020

PRINCIPAL'S NEWS

Dear Parents

I want to thank you again for your support throughout what has been a very unusual school semester.  The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting our entire community and has presented us with extraordinary challenges in managing schooling during the first half of 2020.  I am pleased that together, we have been able to make the best of this situation and ensure your child’s safety and continuity of learning.

With the regular attendance of many students being lower over this time, the breadth and depth of the curriculum covered throughout Semester 1 may have been reduced.  For this reason, schools are not required to include A to E grades on this year’s Semester 1 student reports.  It also means that your child’s attendance may not be reported, and any written comments may provide less information on their progress than usual.

Schooling is once again returning to normal and our students are engaging in the regular curriculum, in their usual classroom environment.  Those approved to learn from home are also being supported.  Semester 2 reports will reflect this and therefore provide the usual, more detailed information on your child’s progress and achievement.

Kind regards

Darryl Dedman

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT (PBS)

Why Positive Behaviour Support?

PBS develops expectations and associated behaviours (Start Behaviours) that are explicitly taught to the student.  This system provides students the opportunity to reflect upon their behaviours and an opportunity for teachers to target behaviours that need more focus.  The long term purpose of PBS is to make behaviours more intrinsic for students, so that they’re displayed in and around the school, home and the community.

PBS is opposite to traditional discipline; traditional discipline tells the student not to display a behaviour that is inappropriate.  Whereas PBS coaches and refines a student’s behaviour so they can reflect and understand why the choice of their behaviour is important.

How does PBS work?

PBS is language driven, and the focus is on the student’s behaviour not the individual student.  A curriculum of targeted behaviours, called a Matrix is what drives PBS.  Students are explicitly taught a behaviour that links to the school’s expectations.  When the students display the behaviours they’re acknowledged through a tangible.  The students have a number of tangibles they need to reach and once they achieve that target they can choose from a list of acknowledgements e.g. “A prize from the office”, “Free dress for a day” etc…

What happens if a student misbehaves?

Inappropriate behaviours (Stop Behaviours) are an opportunity to redirect, prompt, re-teach and coach a student to display the appropriate behaviours.  As per school policy any behaviours that are physical and verbally abusive in nature will be dealt with directly by administration.

What does PBS look like at Rawlinson?

At RPS we have three focus expectations that we will instil in our students. At Rawlinson we are; RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE and READY.

Please see below our PBS Matrix for further details of the expectations and the targeted behaviours.  We would encourage families to use the same expectations and targeted behaviours at home.  The language is key to the success of PBS.

Kind regards

HEALTHY TIPS

Keeping children healthy

SLEEP

School-aged children need 10 -11 hours sleep a night.  Getting a good night’s sleep will help your child to be more settled, happy and ready for school, and will strengthen his/her immune system.  Here are some sleep tips:

·         Have a bedtime routine – this will help your child wind down from the day.

·         Keep the bedroom dark, cool and quiet - this will help your child drift off easily.

·         If anxieties or worries are keeping your child from relaxing, acknowledge the feelings and deal with it straight away or plan to sort the issue out in the morning after a good night’s sleep.

Remember, medication is not the answer to children’s sleep problems.

Contact your local Community Health Nurse, or go to http://raisingchildren.net.au for more information.
