James Busby High School

Term 1, Week 11, 2022

From the Principal

Term 1 2022 has had its challenges. However, all things considered, a highly successful term. I am in awe of how quickly our school community pulls together to support each other. I especially want to call out our amazing staff who have gone to enormous lengths to ensure that students remain engaged and that the focus is always about learning. Everyone is operating above their usual capacity to enable this to happen. I am immensely proud of this. I would also like to acknowledge the great sense of responsibility and accountability that our parents and carers have shown in contacting us when a child is positive or isolating as a close contact, keeping students home when sick ‘just in case’ and the general exemplary communication and support that has been evident. Thank you all for your diligence and strong sense of community. The overwhelmingly positive feedback is greatly appreciated. Finally, we must also commend the many students who take charge of their learning each and every day by engaging so respectfully with what is quite often daily changes. When the whole school community comes together everything works better!

Despite the difficulties and complications, we have still managed to run a significant number of extra-curricular programs across the school. Many of these you will read about in this newsletter. The staff and students involved must be commended for their tenacity and resilience in committing to these activities. They allow for such positive, fun and engaging breaks from the usual.

Can I please remind all students, parents and carers:

· Arrive at school on time. School starts for all students at 8.50am. There will be a very strong expectation around attendance starting next term. Students, parents and carers of all students who do not attend 90% or more of the time may be asked to attend the school for interviews and the co-creation of attendance improvement plans.

· Be in uniform.

· Have all equipment necessary for learning every day. This is a huge focus as it directly impacts learning.

· Be on time for and attend all lessons. Lateness to school, classes and truancy will not be tolerated.

· Have an inclusive mindset. Treat everyone equally, fairly and with kindness.

· Be respectful always, in every circumstance. Make the time to say hello, ask how people are and always follow instructions.

· Be safe on the playground and in the classroom. Safety first in everything you do.

· Strive for excellence in all that you do. Do your absolute best always and then challenge yourself to do better.

· Proudly represent the school.

I would like to wish you all a safe, relaxing and enjoyable break and look forward to seeing you all in Term 2.

Regards,

Ms Olimpia Bartolillo

Principal.

Wellbeing Team!

The Wellbeing team includes The Head Teachers Wellbeing and Year Advisers for each grade.  Several staff work closely with the Wellbeing Team to ensure that students are connecting with school in a positive way so that they can succeed and thrive throughout their high school career.

Term 1 at James Busby High School meant welcoming a new Year 7 cohort to the school. Students settled in quickly and showed resilience by adjusting to high school timetables and meeting new teachers and friends.  We were also pleased to welcome back students in Years 8 – 12.

The Wellbeing team introduced fortnightly year assemblies for all year groups this term.  Year meetings take place on a Friday during Pastoral Care and provide a space for Year Advisers to meet with their year groups and communicate important messages.

Merit Awards – Students are reminded to hand in merit certificates to their year advisers.

Merit awards are counted and students who have handed in 6 merit awards earn a Principal’s award.  These are given out during formal assemblies, held once a semester.  Students who hand in merit awards go into a fortnightly draw for a canteen voucher.  The draw takes place during the year meeting.

Online Merits

Students are also awarded online merits by teachers.  The students who have earned the most online merits this term are listed below:

Year 7 – Toufla N.

Year 8 – Joshua M.

Year 9 – Sophaneth N.

Year 10 – Sean B.

Year 11 – Nicole I.

Year 12 – Jayden S.

Congratulations to these students!

A major event of term 1 was The National Day of Action Against Bullying.  Students enjoyed activities in the hall led by prefects and Wellbeing Ambassadors.  The theme was “Bullying:  No way! Be Kind!”.  Stay tuned for more information on Bullying and how to avoid it next term!

Year 9 News

Dear Parents and Carers,

Year 9 have had a strong and positive start to 2022! Teachers are continuing to report positive feedback about the year group regarding their teamwork skills, their ability to achieve in the classroom, and their kind and respectful attitude towards one another. Many new students have also joined the cohort and have been made to feel welcomed.

We have been lucky enough to be able to get together as a year group once again and have Year Meetings. Ms. Bartolillo and Ms. Chand have delivered some important announcements regarding our high expectations in relation to behaviour, uniform and attendance. During these meetings students have also been recognised for their outstanding efforts this term and were awarded merits, canteen vouchers and ice-skating vouchers from Liverpool Catholic Club for adhering to our school values.

To further, assist our students with homework, assessments and classwork students have the opportunity to access B4 multi at recess every day. The Learning Support Team (LST) spend their time providing students who may require additional assistance with their learning. Students are also encouraged to attend The After-School Homework Centre. The centre will once again be located in the library and aims to provide students with help with homework, subject tutorials other schoolwork such as assessment tasks, a quiet place to study, access library books, the internet and other resources. The After-School Study Centre is open from 3:00pm to 5:00pm every, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Students wishing to attend must collect a permission note from the Maths staffroom. No student will be allowed to attend the Study Centre unless a permission note has been returned.

We would also like to congratulate the Year 9 students who have been selected to participate in the Fast Forward Program. Our school will be working in partnership with the Western Sydney University. The aim of this program is to increase the awareness of post-school educational opportunities and promotes the benefits of lifelong learning and the career pathways. Selected students were awarded their Welcoming Gift sent by the university “Letter To My Teenage Self” by Australian author Grace Halphen.

We are looking forward to a fresh start of Term 2.

Thank you for your continued support.

Year Advisers:  Miss Maror and Mrs Shukla

To Year 10, Parents & Guardians

The first term has been a busy one for Year 10, with many of the students completing their first assessment task for each of their subjects. It has been pleasing to witness the high level of application and effort exhibited by the Year 10 students. A reminder to students who are absent on a day of their assessment to obtain a medical certificate and to see their teachers on their first day back at school. If you have any concerns or questions regarding the assessment policy, please reach out as we would like to best assist each student in meeting the requirements to proceed to Stage 6 (Yrs 11 and 12).

It was with great pleasure that we were able to recognise students who have performed above and beyond their teachers’ expectations. Each teacher was asked to nominate one Year 10 student who has consistently gone ‘over and above’ in the classroom. It was pleasing to see so many teachers asking to nominate multiple students. In total 75 nominations were made with 31 students (a third of the grade) recognised. These students were recognised and acknowledged at year meeting in Week 10, whereby the students were presented by the Principal with an award highlighting this achievement. It was truly positive to see so many students receive multiple awards from a range of their subjects. This recognition highlighted the fact that there are so many students who consistently exhibited positive examples of the school values.

From Week 10 this term and continuing in Term 2, Year 10 have been given the opportunity to participate in a free initiative run by TAFE, called the YES Plus Program. The intention of the course is to provide the Year 10 students an insight into future careers and to how see TAFE would be like as a future study option. The program allows for the students to visit TAFE to engage in courses that range from construction, health and beauty, engineering & robotics, running a small business, computers, vehicle mechanic, nursing, etc. At the end of the completion the students will receive a certificate of completion, and hopefully this will provide them with an advantage when securing a school-based apprenticeship (SBAT) in Year 11. Students are encouraged to sign up their interest to the program via the link that was sent through their school email. Any further questions should be directed to Mr Kwon (Careers Advisor) or Mr Suljevic (Transition Advisor).

A select group of Year 10 students continued their involvement with the Fast Forward program this term. This is a project where James Busby High School has developed a partnership with Western Sydney University. Students are provided with the opportunity to receive mentorship with university students. They will be heading to their university visit next term (10th June).

Additionally, we have also had a group of Year 10 boys involved in a project called Boys Education. On a weekly basis the boys are visited by guest speakers as well with the organising teacher; Mr McCabe – Head Teacher of PDHPHE to discuss important issues impacting on their physical and mental health.  After the completion of the course the boys will be able to rely on these strategies and techniques learnt to continue to make positive choices for their education and lifestyle.

Year 10 students will be participating in their first rounds of Minimum Standards testing next term. This is a requirement of the Department of Education and the school will endeavour to support each student to meet these standards. Should you have any questions regarding Minimum Standards, please direct your enquiries to Mr Costa (HT Secondary Studies) who will be happy to answer any of your questions.

Thank you for your continued support and we are looking forward to Term 2. Please do not hesitate to reach out should you require any further information or there are any concerns you have.

The magic of reading amongst books

Too often, we indulge in the colour and glamour of technology that we forget the beauty of books, immersing ourselves in the simplicity of stories. Each week, Jindabyne spends time in the library to read, discover and dream amongst endless shelves of books. Reading is fantastic but reading in the library is magnificent.

Jindabyne and Ms. Pham

We love reading!

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

What made us proud is being recognised for our accomplishments and achievements. Mr Foster wrote a note to all teachers about our achievements on Sentral. It looked like this, " Congrats to our new RECYCLING team. They are doing a great job. They were extremely polite when they came to the staffroom and listened to all instructions. They are also strong young men and women, they took the recycling away from our staffroom and did it with minimal fuss. Cheers, Foster"A huge congratulations to the efforts of our students in Jindabyne. You are a true reflection of James Busby's values.

Community Access - learning through practical experiences is how we learn best in Jindabyne. Mrs Pham's feedback about the Community Access Program: "Ms Pham, today Winston came home and asked me to take him to Stocklands Wetherill Park to buy him a Bumble Bee Transformer toy. He said, he saw it at Kmart. When I took him there, he knew exactly where to go and directed me to it. I was so happy and proud."

Having a blast!

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Dance Workshops

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at JBHS were invited to participate in three online dance workshops run by the Department of Education in collaboration with the internationally renowned Bangarra Dance Theatre.

This aim of the workshops was to foster the development of dance skills and cultural significance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in years 7 - 12.

During the online workshops, students learnt contemporary indigenous dance repertoire from some of Bangarra's leading dancers and choreographers. Students also demonstrated choreographic skills in composing their own movement.

The final workshop culminated in a small showing of the dance learnt to fellow peers, classes and parents.

It was a wonderful experience for our students to work with industry professionals and connect virtually with schools from all across NSW.

Dance at JBHS is back!!

After almost two years of not being able to have a cross-cohort dance group due to COVID restrictions, Dance Group is back up and running and we have been busy!

The JBHS Dance Group (students in Years 7-10) and the Special Education Dance Group have worked really hard in a very short period of time, getting together their dance items to audition for the Metropolitan South and the Metropolitan West Dance Festival. These are highly prestigious dance festivals that involve a vigorous audition process with no guarantee of being accepted. For a school that offers dance as an extra- curricular activity, the students have worked really hard to learn a substantial amount of choreography. Auditions are in and we have our fingers crossed. I can not wait to see these items come to life on the stage!

Students had so many challenges to face, and they worked together to achieve their goals.

The reviews from Year 7 came in:

"This is the most fun I've had in my life!"

"Can we do this EVERY DAY?"

Needless to say, it was a successful day and the only negative was the time limit imposed.

The MANGA Project

Our talented artists, Jaylyn and Jazzlyn of Year 10 have completed their art works. You may remember from our last newsletter, they began their first art works late last year and we saw a work in progress.

To our amazement, both students have now completed not one, but TWO pieces each.

Their art hangs proudly in the Library among our Manga collection. We are so incredibly proud of Jaylyn and Jazzlyn. Every day, without fail, I hear positive comments and discussion about the art by staff and students. Our students even ask if they can purchase the works!

Congratulations to Jaylyn and Jazzlyn, who worked on their art independently, and at home. They completed their art out of a love for art and we are so in awe of their passion and dedication for their craft. We have plans to celebrate with their peers and family by having an official opening of our Manga section. Stay tuned!
