PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Please read below for some information on what has been happening and what we have to look forward to!

Reconciliation Week

This week marked Reconciliation Week across Australia, an opportunity to further develop positive relationships between all Australians. Here at Scarborough we started the week with a mini assembly to acknowledge the significance and importance of the week. This was further reinforced with an interactive display in the hallway for classes to engage with and a range of curriculum embedded classroom activities throughout the school. These included everything from reflections on Sally Morgan art work to guided reading activities with a focus on Aboriginal culture to inquiries into Aboriginal role models who have made significant contributions to our country.

It is important to remember that at Scarborough PS, developing Aboriginal cultural awareness as well as cultural awareness in general amongst our students does not begin and end with events such as Reconciliation Week. A respect for cultural diversity is embedded throughout the year in all that we do.  Our school has a Reconciliation Action Plan that guides us in developing links with our local Aboriginal environment and culture on an ongoing basis. Developing cultural understanding is also heavily embedded in the Australian Curriculum in a range of areas including Science, The Arts and HASS.

This year, our upcoming STEAM EXPO also has an Indigenous focus. Please look out for more information on this in the next newsletter.

School Board

Our dedicated School Board has met twice over the last fortnight; the scheduled meeting was held on May 22 and was followed up on May 29 with a training session.

At the 22 May meeting the Board heard more details about upcoming capital works at the school. This included the news that the disability access works planned for the front of the school will start during the July holidays and are expected to take up to a month to complete. The most disruptive parts of the works will occur in holiday time; however, more minor disruptions can be expected in the first two weeks of term 3. This may include alternate access to the staff car park and the reception area being put in place.

On 29 May the Board engaged the consultancy services of Geoff Metcalf, a former Principal of 26 years, Director of Early Childhood in the Department of Education and advisor to the Department’s School Improvement Directorate.  Geoff spoke to us about strategies to maximise the effectiveness of the work carried out by the Board to enhance the impact that this important body can have on the strategic direction of the school.

The next Board meeting is due to be held on 12 June. At this meeting the Board will be focussing on the Strong Governance and Support section of the Business Plan to monitor progress being made in this area. As with all Board meetings, this meeting is open to any members of the public who might like to come along and get a sense of the type of work that School Boards engage in.

The Fathering Project

Please note that there has been a change of date for the information session on the Fathering Project. It will now be held at Doubleview Bowling Club at 7pm on Wednesday 19 June. Outstanding Contributions

This is a friendly reminder for outstanding school contributions to be paid.

These make a huge difference to the opportunities and outcomes for our students.  The voluntary contributions of parents like you over many years have enabled Scarborough Primary School to continue providing facilities and resources including: Musical Instruments, P.E Equipment, ICT resources, Mathematics, Science & Technology Equipment and Audio-visual Equipment.

Woolworths Earn and Learn

We are excited to be taking part in the 2019 Woolworths Earn & Learn program. During the previous campaign, we were able to purchase some great resources with the points we earned, thanks to you. Collect your stickers at Woolworths and for every $10 you spend (excluding the purchase of tobacco, liquor and gift cards), you will receive a sticker. Your children can then place them on the special sticker sheet. Once completed, bring it to school or you drop them into your local Woolworths collection box.

You can collect a sticker sheet in store or you can download them by clicking here.

The more points we earn, the more we can redeem from a choice of over 10,000 educational resources including mathematics and English resources, art & crafts materials and much, much more!

We are grateful for your support and look forward to a successful program.

Scarborough Snack Shack - VOLUNTEERS

Business is booming!  We are now preparing and delivering over 30 crunch and sips, 50 recess items and more than 80 lunches every Friday - and I could really use an extra pair of hands to help get the lunch run done.

If you're available between 11:45am and 1:15pm on a Friday, please register via QuickCliq under Volunteering, or contact Jackie on 0422 977 208.  You just need a hat, enclosed shoes and a smile, I'll provide the apron, plus your child can have a FREE Meal Deal for your efforts … without a helper, getting these hungry kids fed on time can be tricky!

Thanks

Jackie

Thank you Canteen Volunteers!

Jackie would like to extend a massive "Thank You"  to all the wonderful volunteers this Term who have helped out in the canteen. Whether it was for 1 hour or more she would like to extend her gratitude for helping to make the canteen run so smoothly!

We would love to extend the momentum to next term and meet some new friendly faces plus welcome back our regular helpers.

Entertainment Books

Please ask your family, friends, neighbours or work colleagues if they would like to help with the fundraiser by purchasing your allocated book. After this, if you would like to return the book, please drop it back in the personalised envelope provided, clearly marked with your child’s name. If these could be returned as soon as possible so we can receive our cheque from the funds raised.

$14 from the sale of each book goes directly to the P&C to assist with fundraising. Thank you.
