Student Leadership positions

We recently announced our Year 6 Sports Leaders and Student Executive for 2023. The school undertakes an extensive process to select our student leaders which includes interested students completing a nomination form along with peer and staff feedback for each of the nominees. Along with the final nominees below, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of all students who submitted an application, this is a great reflection of the commitment within the year 6 student cohort to take on leadership responsibilities at our school.

Our student leaders and by extension, all senior students, are expected to fulfil a variety of roles and responsibilities within the school community, and most importantly, be a positive role model for all students by demonstrating our school values. Congratulations to the students below.

 NAPLAN

This week our year 3 and 5 students completed their final NAPLAN assessment. NAPLAN is made up of tests in the 4 areas of: reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. At this stage we do not have confirmation of when student achievement information will be provided back to the school and families. Once received, staff will review student achievement at the individual, cohort and whole school level to identify strengths and potential areas of growth. This process complements other existing assessment practices utilised by teachers as it is very important that judgements of student learning progress are not based on one single assessment such as NAPLAN.

Attendance

A crucial foundation that underpins student learning is regular school attendance. Children who attend school regularly have consistent learning experiences and are able to participate in class activities productively. Studies have shown that regular absences can predict later attendance patterns and are also a strong indicator of lower levels of achievement in learning tasks as well as the potential for poorly developed social skills and difficulties in forming and maintaining relationships. Whilst we acknowledge that illness and other unavoidable circumstances can impact on student attendance, our expectation and goal is that all students are at school every day. Currently our overall school attendance level to this point in the term is approximately 95% which is an excellent outcome.

 School Facilities Update

In the upcoming holiday period we will be looking to install new interactive screens in 4 classrooms. They will replace existing whiteboard projectors and will provide a significant increase in image quality and functionality for students and teachers. By the end of 2024 we are aiming to have all classes equipped with a new screen which will be an excellent outcome for the school.

Later in the year a landscaping project will be undertaken at the Burford Rd entrance to the school (opposite the tennis courts). The work will enhance the appearance of this area of our yard and is a part of a staged plan to address various locations within the school grounds.

Further to these projects, OSHC are in the process of researching the installation of an outdoor shelter (adjoining the current OSHC building) and the Grounds Committee will be looking to confirm a plan for the replacement of play equipment over the coming years.

All of this work is really exciting for the community and reflects our commitment to providing a high quality environment for our students.

100th Birthday celebration in 2024.

As mentioned in an earlier newsletter, Henley Beach Primary School is turning 100 next year. As a part of the celebration planning we are hoping to develop a time capsule. We are aware that there may already be two capsules located within the school grounds but currently are unable to pin point their exact location! If you are an ex-student of the school or know someone who is, we would really appreciate some direction as to where to start looking. Please contact the front office if you can help.

School Values

In our last newsletter, we explored ideas around the school value “Doing Your Best”. This time, we will focus on “Safety”. Every child has the right to feel safe at school.

Safety takes on many forms, and is a consideration in many places. We can explore being safe on the road, keeping yourself safe, safety in public, safety at school and at home. For the purpose of our school values we will explore this more broadly.

Being safe on the roads

Daily crossing monitors support children and families to cross the road safely; thank you to the volunteers who help keep us safe. Please use designated crossing areas when crossing the road and remind your children of safety rules including stop, look and listen. Thank you to the 65 students who have been crossing monitors this term!

When riding to school, always follow road rules and signs. Remember to dismount bikes and scooters before using the crossing.

Being safe at school

All children have a right to feel safe at school. We co-construct environments that are supportive of all children and aim to increase their feelings of safety. Supportive learning environments allow children to reach their fullest potential. Working together to reduce bullying and increase feelings of safety ensures all children feel supported at school.

Online safety

This year, we will be engaging in Cyber Safety presentations run by the South Australian Police. Age appropriate sessions will focus on developing an awareness of being safe online and what to do if you feel unsafe. Information on this session can be found on the Think You Know website.

Safe people

Support your child/ren to ensure that they have a person they can feel safe talking to. Having a trusted adult at home, and at school, supports children to be safe and have someone that they can speak to. Chat to your child/ren about who this person is for them.

Easter lunchtime session

Next week, we will have a lunchtime session run by the local Church. The session will be on Thursday 30 March in the gym at lunchtime. The session “Symbols of Easter” is described as follows:

In an age appropriate, interactive and fun way, we will explore the meaning and symbolism of the Easter egg, hot cross bun, chicks, holidays, and even Granny Smith apples will be featured.

If you specifically do not want your child to attend, please let their class teacher know.

Harmony Dress up Day - Wednesday 22 March

Our school celebrated Harmony Day today. It was wonderful to see the sea of orange across the site, with some students also choosing to wear traditional cultural dress. Harmony activities have occured throughout the week with year 6 students running activities in classes and canteen specials. It has been great to see the harmonious partnership of the students in engaging in these activities.
