PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear Parents/Carers

Here we are at the end of Term 1, 2022! What a term we have had; as we embraced the ever changing Covid guidelines and navigated the ongoing wet weather. We began Term 1 with a split timetable and cohorting in grade groups to keep everyone safe until midterm. Despite all these challenges we have continued to focus of our core business of learning within a happy, safe, friendly environment.

I have been very impressed by the persistence and grit displayed by our students and teachers throughout these challenging times to keep going and focus on the job at hand. A huge thank you to our amazing teachers and flexible students and our supportive families within our community.

Our day to day staffing has been impacted by Covid throughout the term; we tried very hard to keep continuity of class routine as teachers had to have timeout in isolation due to family contact. Thank you to our WPS families for your understanding and support during these tricky staffing moments. We try at all times to get things right but appreciate your understanding when things change quickly.

We have lots to celebrate at Willoughby during Term 1; our successful swimming carnival, Sports Pro Athletics training program for Years 2-6, Sport in Schools team building program for K and Year 1, the return of the Band Program with our Training, Intermediate and Performing bands, Chess Club, Harmony Day and the return of the netball training sessions to name a few of the things that have helped us return to “normal”.

Thank you to our teachers for their preparation for our annual parent- teacher student progress interviews. The change in format for the interviews was well received with both teachers and parents gathering in a central place. There was a positive vibe emanating from the hall on both Monday and Tuesday as our teachers and parents connected face to face. 3G, 1H and 2C will have their interviews early next term.

The school was a hive of activity on Monday and Wednesday afternoon this week as we opened our doors and invited our families into the school for the first time since March 2020! Our students were excellent tour guides as they proudly showed their families around our amazing school – visiting the new learning hubs, classrooms, the music rooms and our wonderful library.

We could not have asked for a better day, weather wise for our Easter Hat Parade on Tuesday afternoon! Most of the K-2 classes took advantage of their Buddy Classes during our Parent Teacher progress interview buddy time to create the most magnificent Easter Hats for our K-2 students. Please see a selection of photos from the afternoon below.

I would like to say a sincere thanks to Mrs Alisoun Garrard for her commitment to Willoughby PS over the years. Mrs Garrard has accepted and EOI in DET Corporate as an Assistant Principal, Curriculum & Instruction, Virtual Delivery for 12 months. Mrs Garrard will be working with small country schools virtually, delivering Mathematics professional learning. Mrs Tracey Mavromatis will be working with Mrs Panetta on Year 4 for the remainder of the year on Thursday and Friday.

Farewell and thank you to Miss Haefeli for your commitment and dedication to our students at Willoughby PS for the past 4 years. We have appreciated your impact and involvement in our school and wish you every success as you take your position in an Independent School in Term 2.

Also, farewell and thank you to Miss Van Kool for the great work you have done this term with 1K. We wish you the very best and keep safe as you travel overseas next term.

We hope to have both positions filled with permanent teachers by the start of Term 2.

ANZAC Ceremony – A huge congratulations to our students for showing respect throughout our annual Anzac Assembly this morning. Thank you to our Performing Band, School Captains and Vice-Captains, and musicians Kalen and Zac for making our commemorative service so special. Thank you, Mayor Tanya Taylor, for attending and the many parents who joined us in person or via Zoom. Thank you also to Mr Michaeil and Mrs Lyon for the wonderful organisation, and our Tech Team for organising the Zoom and PowerPoint.

I would like to wish everyone a relaxing healthy holiday, hopefully with lots of sunshine to rest and recharge ready for a wonderful Term 2 at WPS.

Kind regards

Jennifer

EASTER HAT PARADE

From our Buddy School - flood affected Tumbulgum Public School

Dear Willoughby Public School Year 6 students,

From the bottom of our hearts we would like to thank you for your thoughtful and kind letters.

When we received them yesterday we could not believe how generous these letters were. Whilst we have had a terrible time up here in northern NSW with the weather and floods your beautiful letters have given us a sense of hope.

We have been so looked after by our close community and the wider community of wonderful Australians. We really do live in the best country.

We loved how you shared your own personal stories and interests with us. We read your letters over and over yesterday and then took them home and read them to our families last night. Some happy tears were shed.

Thank you so much for think of us. You can’t imagine how this act of kindness has helped us. You must be part of a beautiful school.

Warm regards,

All the children of Tumbulgum

Sports Report

It has been another huge fortnight in sport.

Connor Fallet trialled for zone selection in tennis, made selection and then went on to be selected in the Sydney North Tennis squad at regional level. He will now play for our region in a tennis tournament later this term against children from all over NSW. We are crossing our fingers that he gains selection at state level to represent NSW! Good luck Connor!

Around fifty girls from years 3-6 went to play in the Skellern Cup Gala day, a day that promotes girls engaging with the sport of football. The weather played havoc with running of the day but our resilient girls had a great day all the same. Thank you to the teachers that took the girls to the event on the day and filling in last minute due to unforeseen circumstances.

Here are some wonderful pictures of our amazing sports people from this fortnight.

LIBRARY NEWS

2022 Premier’s Reading Challenge

The Challenge is now underway for the year, concluding in August. Years 3-6 Students are challenged to read 20 quality books between now and August, and our K-2 students read 30. For our Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students the Challenge is completed at school, during their Library time. All students take part and we read the books together. There is nothing that needs to be done at home. Our Years 3-6 students complete the Challenge independently, whilst well supported by Library staff. We teach the students how to enter the books they have read onto the PRC website, so that they can continue to do that at home until completion. We validate all completed entries online, then towards the end of Term 4 students receive their Certificates. More information can be found by visiting the PRC website.

WPS P&C Band update

The bands were excited to return to in-person performances on Monday morning, with the traditional Term 1 Easter Band Welcome concert. We were also delighted to welcome the Mayor, Tanya Taylor, back to Willoughby School for the concert and thank her for her support.

The program was kicked off with the first ever performance by the Training Band, who have only been playing for 6 weeks. The band showed off how much they have learned, including the old favourite "Hot Cross Buns".

They were followed by Intermediate Band, and due to the pandemic, this is only their second concert in person - the first was the Easter concert last year! Despite reduced numbers it was amazing how far they have come and they had a great sound.

Performing band performed their first concert under their new conductor Mr  Scarborough, and showed an impressive array of show tunes including "Rolling in the Deep" and "Ain't no Mountain High Enough".

The raffle held at the end of the concert raised nearly $700!

Thanks to the school exec, including Ms Simmonds and Mr Michaeil for their continued support for the band. Well done to the conductors, Mr Marsden, Mr Scarborough, Mr Brinsmead and Ms Parke for their work with the band. A huge shoutout to Meredith Robson for organising a very smooth event. And well done parents and students for getting up early on a Monday morning!

Netball Club update

Netball’s back and there was excitement across the Club for Round 1 matches which were played last weekend!

This year we have over 170 children from grades 2 through 6 playing across 19 teams in the Northern Suburbs Netball Association (NSNA)competition. Matches are held at Willoughby Leisure Centre with our Year 4, Year 5 and most Year 6 Netball teams battling it out under lights on Friday evenings (two Year 6 teams play on Saturday mornings). Our youngest registered players – Year 2 and Year 3 Club members – play in the NetSetGo competition held on Sunday mornings.

Despite some inclement weather, teams are settling into their new training schedules which will resume from week 1 of term 2, with the exception of public holidays. It’s been wonderful to see the kids back on the school courts most afternoons and some mornings having fun, keeping active and learning new skills with their coaches and peers.

We’re a volunteer-run club so it’s also been heartening to see families putting up their hands to get involved. From Team Managers who play a vital role in sharing information between the Club and their teams, to our volunteer parent umpires and coaches who’ve attended weekend training and refresher courses ahead of the season, parents attending our Term 1 Committee meeting and, of course, our players who come with energy and a positive sporting attitude to training and matches. It takes all of us to make the season possible and enjoyable – so, thank you.

A few reminders:

  • The 2022 training and match calendar is available on the P&C website.
  • Team fixtures can be accessed here on PlayHQ by selecting the NetSetGo or Netball competition, then your team.
  • Round 2 matches are scheduled for this weekend (weather permitting). If you’re away, please let your Team Manager know so they can confirm numbers and borrow additional players as necessary.
  • In the event of non-friendly netball weather on match days, be sure to keep an eye on both the NSNA website and WPSNC socials (Facebook and Insta) for any updates which are generally posted after 3pm on Fridays, 7am on Saturdays and 7:30am on Sundays. No message generally means games are ON.

·         After two years with restrictions, spectators are invited back to the sidelines. Please keep comments positive and encouraging, ensuring you remain well away from the edges of the court to allow the umpire room to move and see. And remember, furry friends are not allowed at the netball courts on game days.

  • Our Term 2 Committee Meeting is scheduled for 7pm on Monday 16 May. Please mark it in your diary as we’re keen to see you there!

Willoughby Public School stands on Cammeraygal land.

We acknowledge the traditional owners and recognise their continuing connection to land, sky, waters and culture.

Just as we learn and play here at Willoughby Public School today, we know that for many tens thousands of years, Aboriginal families learned and played on the very ground our school now stands on.

We value the way the traditional owners looked after and cared for this land, and we hope to continue to care for and respect this land, so that it is here for generations to come.

We pay our respects to the Elders, past, present and emerging and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
