Staff Notices

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Carers

Staff continue to express how lovely it is to have the students back at school. It has now been two full weeks with face-to-face teaching and I feel that students and staff alike have settled well in the routines of school life.

Because the focus has been so much on online teaching and learning this year and then the return to school with a vast array of hygiene and safety measures to be put in place, I could not remember clearly what I would normally put in a newsletter mid-May, so I had a look at what I had written in previous years. I was very much saddened to see that so much revolved around cultural and sporting activities, which at present must remain on hold in 2020.

 FROM THE CHAPLAIN

I think that over the past few weeks I have used my computer more often than I have in the past. But part of the extra use has been revamping, filing and renaming files. Because I operate with at least three separate storage places, the challenge is to make sure every place has the same most up-to-date file in it.

I had a classic case this week of hunting for a file, not finding it on any of the storage places and coming into work really early to redo it, only to find it in an obvious place, but named incorrectly.

Since Week 7 Term 1, we have been unable to worship in the Chapel. That has been really difficult for a school community that was founded by Christians and that has Christianity at its heart. But worship is only one part of living and revealing the Christian life. Jesus came to call us to show God’s love in relationship and community. To bring before God our concerns, not just for ourselves, but more so for others in prayer.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR DEPUTY HEAD OF PRIMARY - MEADOW SPRINGS

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Face-to-Face Teaching

It has been wonderful to welcome back all students to face-to-face teaching over the last two weeks of school. During the period of remote learning, the School really was a strange place to be with so little students on campus. The returning ‘buzz’ around the School has left a great feeling for all students and staff as students have re-connected with each other.

This week Mrs Skehan and I have visited each class, talking with all the students about the need to re-establish the routines that we had in place prior to our stint away from the School. This has included little things like ensuring that we are displaying good listening in class, trying our very best with our learning and displaying the school core values across any given day.

Thank you to all of our school families for your ongoing support and we look forward to being able to have you back on campus as well.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

We are aware that some families have been directly affected by the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic with job loss, significant reduction in work hours or business closure, causing significant financial stress.

All schools of the Anglican Schools Commission will provide tuition fee assistance to those families who are now experiencing financial stress due to loss of employment. The level of tuition fee support will be commensurate with the new financial circumstances in which families find themselves due to the impact of COVID-19 on the Australian economy.

Affected families are invited to contact the School Business Manager, Kylie Anastazjew, bursar@fias.wa.edu.au so we can work with you on a solution that best fits your situation. Given the changing nature of measures necessary to combat COVID-19, financial arrangements will cover the period to the end of Term 2, with an assurance that we will review this position in June in relation to ongoing enrolments.

GORDON HOUSE CHALLENGE

Gordon House students, led by Gordon House Prefect Danielle Booker, took up the challenge over the online learning period to collect warm blankets, jackets, beanies and food that could be distributed to those in need, just in time for winter.

The aim of the challenge was to help students understand that although home isolation was difficult, there are people who are doing it much tougher.

The students have done a great job of collecting these items for Halo and will continue to collect more throughout the year.

Congratulations to all Gordon students!

PUBLISHED AUTHORS

Twelve students who are now in Years 6 and 7 took part in the Write a A Book Project as Year 5 and 6 students in 2019.

The students were in groups of six and were given their brief and then set about brainstorming and collaborating their creative ideas.  The idea was to come up with one story which had to be a warning tale and include a repeating rhyme.

All students did their own illustrations, layout and editing. It was then sent to be published at the end of Term 4, 2019.   A copy of each book was presented to Head of Library, Mrs Anne Johannesen.

Year 7:
Leia Singh, Katie-Rose Bath, Matilda Hamson, Lilly Payne, Tahlia Hill, Jessica Meares

Year 6:
Stella Lewis, Kyara Grove, Manel van den Kerckhove, Hannah Paton, Lily Westwater, Andre Gilleece

ART GALLERY HONOUR

Kate Johnson from our Class of 2019 had her artwork, titled ‘Your Trash is My Treasure’, selected to be on display in the Art Gallery of Western Australia this year.
After judging by an expert panel, Kate’s photographic and mixed media sculptural installation was chosen to be showcased amongst a group of talented young artists. The exhibition displays the work of Year 12 students who graduated the previous year and is titled ‘Pulse Perspectives’ (formerly known as Year 12 Perspectives).
The aim of the exhibition is to highlight and recognise the most talented young artists in the state and to gauge the pulse of young people who will influence, empower and shape the world we live in.
The selected works provide a window into young people’s private, social and artistic concerns; an inspiring, rewarding and insightful look at the world through the minds of our most creative.

As the exhibition was closed to the public they made it available through a Virtual Tour. You can have a wander through the incredible exhibition and experience the works in situ from a distance:
