Issue 2019 / 13

FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

In a week that has seen speeches presented by the 2019-2020 Prefect aspirants, the words responsibility and giving back are at the fore. The words though, should resonate for students across our School. Learning to accept responsibility for your own actions and their consequences is key. In order to change our circumstances, we must first learn to acknowledge them and to accept that, no matter how unfair they may seem, life is not always fair.

Responsibility is all about one’s ability to respond in any given situation. Sadly, our media is full of examples of people showing little responsibility in their lives, and people who react to life by losing their cool and acting rashly. We know a few prominent Australian sportsmen who fall into this category… On the other hand, those who pause for a moment when they are challenged and think before they make their move, are responding to life. The emotional impulse to a set of circumstances is a reaction and can often be rash and undisciplined and more inclined to be ego-driven than driven by the spirit. Where you are required to temper your reaction with some careful thought using self-discipline and self-understanding that comes with this, inevitably provides a far more appropriate response.

One of the many examples of our students giving back to the community is the Cadet Unit. Frequently I have written of their exploits and the support they give to many organisations on the Beaches. Again, last Friday at the annual Vietnam Veterans Commemoration Service, our Cadets were a central part of the event, together with Year 7 bugler Anton. The precision of the Catafalque Party together with supporting cadets gives us every reason to feel enormous pride in these fine young people. My sincere thanks to the students and their Commanding Officer, Captain McClean, for ensuring their service is appreciated by civic leaders and our veterans.

In times of turbulence, and society today is turbulent, your particular journey is a choice. I encourage you to read the brief attachment entitled Tweens: Leaving Childhood which reminds us of the challenges facing Tweens today. It is not an easy journey and we know the determination, flexibility and courage needed on all sides. The uncertainties, the anxious moments and the fluctuations in confidence and exhaustion are all a part of the journey that we support at Pittwater House for our young people, and know that you, as parents, appreciate and are a part of, too. Thus, every opportunity for us to work with you and provide workshops, meetings and 1:1 discussion is a part of our offering. We appreciate there is no right or wrong way along the path each student takes and that the varying roads to individual destinations with their blocks and challenges, are there to teach an important life lesson. Please continue to work with us in supporting your children.

Finally, a reminder that next week our annual House Dinners are held for all students in Years 5 to 12. With Butterworth on Monday, Morgan on Tuesday and Orrock on Wednesday, the House Dinner requires compulsory attendance for students, and is an important event in our calendar. The second half of Term 3 is a particularly busy time with many events and showcasing our graduating students.

I look forward to sharing these great moments with our students, and the parent body.

Year 9 PDHPE - 'Active Body and Mind'

Year 9 PDHPE classes are currently working through an “Activate Body and Mind” unit whereby they complete a range of individual and group activities aimed at developing their knowledge and skills regarding what it takes to not only lead but maintain a healthy outlook on life.

They have already attended a nutrition and mental health presentation titled “The Biting Truth” and are currently participating in physical activities at The Rock House and Jumpd.

The unit culminates in Week 8 of this term with the students setting up stalls at lunchtimes promoting the Dimensions of Health. This also coincides with Health and Physical Education Day on September 12.

“The nationwide event is designed to raise awareness of the value of HPE in the Australian Curriculum and highlight the important role it plays in the learning and development of children. Teachers and Students are encouraged to get involved by holding activities or events for students during the week or on the day itself”.

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS

From the Head of Junior School

Enriching the Junior School literary experiences, our librarians have put together an exciting program of guest authors and activities in the library this week. These included a visit from Opera Australia, presenting ‘By the Light of the Moon’ - an adaptation of the poem The Owl and the Pussy Cat, our spectacular Book Character Parade, and, the annual Book Fair. We are most grateful to our librarians for igniting a love of Reading – our Secret Power.

Congratulations are extended to the Years 5 and 6 GATEway 8 Prep team who finished an encouraging 6th overall with the following results. =2nd in English =2nd in Art and Design and =3rd in History. Arabella Handley is also congratulated for her selection in the CIS Cricket Team.

We have an extraordinarily eventful Week 6 to look forward to next week with the three House Dinners, Butterworth Morgan and Orrock, taking place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings respectively, as well as The HICES Athletics Carnival on Wednesday at SOPAC, the Year 2 OEG Lane Cove Excursion, the first of the Year 7 2020 Orientation Days and the PHPA Father’s Day Breakfast. It is certain to be a most pleasurable and entertaining couple of weeks.

'Amazing Me'

Over the past few weeks, Year 6 students (and parents) have been participating in a program called 'Amazing Me'.  The program specialises in providing parents, educators and children with a positive and empowering day and evening sex education program.  The facilitator, Rowena Thomas is a primary school teacher with more than 25 years’ experience in sexuality education.  Rowena understands the complexities and challenges about sex education and is passionate when talking about sex and puberty.  Rowena and Pittwater House share the same goal and understanding that helpful conversations should be started and continued.  We strive to ‘normalise’ puberty for our students and hope that through the program relationships are enriched and strengthened and as a result, wise choices are made in the future.

The Amazing Me program is humorous, sensitive, engaging, straight to the point, open and honest – everything that our Year 6 Pittwater House parents appreciate.

Our parent session in Week 1 was lively and uninhibited, a place where parents and children were able to listen, talk and learn together in a relaxed atmosphere.  All students are encouraged to respect themselves and others, to celebrate diversity, to be self-confident and to have a great understanding of their bodies during puberty.

This week we have 25 students at HICES Music Festival and Jazz Academy which will perform at Sydney Town Hall (tonight) Wednesday August 21 in a performance that combines all HICES schools from NSW together to showcase the best of the best music students from these schools.

On Thursday August 22 and Friday August 23 our HSC Dance candidates, consisting of Year 12 and Year 11 accelerated students, will be presenting their Performance, Compositions, Major Studies and Interviews to a panel of external markers from NESA. This exam is worth 80% of their external mark. Supporting these HSC students will be selected boys and girls from Years 7 to 11 who will be performing the candidates’ Core and Major Compositions. We wish them well for these examinations.

Next week on Tuesday August 27 the HSC Drama candidates will be presenting their Group and Individual Monologues to a panel from NESA. These examinations are worth 60% of the student’s external mark.

In the weeks following, the HSC Visual Arts and Music candidates will be submitting their Major works in Weeks 7 and 8.

We wish them all the best for their upcoming submissions.

The Senior Creative Arts Night showcases the Creative Arts talents of our Senior School. This will take place in the School Hall on Thursday September 5. This night is a great evening that involves all students participating in our co-curricular creative arts program and is a mandatory night for all students in elective creative arts. The performances will start at 6.30pm and the doors open at 6.00pm.

Senior School Music Festival
The 2019 Pittwater House Creative Arts Senior Music Festival will be held on Thursday 17 October and Monday 21 October in the Creative Arts Centre. The evenings will commence at 6pm and will finish approximately 7:30pm depending on the number of performers.

The Senior Music Festival is a performance opportunity that is open to all students in Years 7-11. The students can perform as either a soloist or in a small group (maximum 4 players). We encourage everyone who learns a musical instrument to perform at this event whether they are taught by one of the Pittwater House music tutors or an outside tutor. Students are able to enter a maximum of 2 pieces on any instrument but can perform 2 pieces on different instruments. There is a total maximum time limit of 5 minutes per student.

Students performing vocal solos will need to submit the lyrics to their song with their application form.

Backing tracks are an acceptable accompaniment but must NOT contain the instrumental/vocal part being performed by the student. A piano/keyboard accompaniment can be arranged with sufficient notice, if music is handed in to the music cottage by the end of Term 3.

Please complete the application form on Skoolbag before 3.00pm on Tuesday 15 October. Late entries CANNOT be accepted.

Year 9 Photography & Digital Media and Visual Arts Excursion

On Wednesday 7 August, Year 9 Photography and Digital media and Year 9 Visual Arts students visited ‘Sun Studios’ (professional photographic studios.) in Alexandria. Students were given a tour of the Canon showroom and participated in a variety of studio lighting workshops incorporating hot spotting, portraiture- working to a brief and movement with Professional Photographer Caroline McCredie and Ellie Waterhouse the Director of the studios. The third workshop saw the boys re-enact 1920’s mugshots and the girls, Renaissance paintings, utilising props from Opera Australia. Students were also very excited to come across a photographic shoot in progress right outside in the carpark too. A fantastic experience for all students and for some perhaps a future career path now worth considering.

SPORT NEWS

Student Sporting Success

Congratulations to Kyran (P4) for being selected into the Manly Marlins Rep team. Over the season they have trained hard and had trial games. In the final competition during the school holidays on the central coast, they came away undefeated on the first day, and narrowly lost a game on the final day.

Congratulations to Levi (G8) and Conner (G8) who competed up at Nationals Pool Rescue Gold Coast last weekend. They did so well with lots of PBs. The highlight was the relay events when the boys won a Silver (2nd) and a Bronze (3rd) at Nationals for Newport with their teammates. Well done boys.

Congratulations and good luck to Harrison  (G8) for being elected into the NSW State Team for Australian Bodyboarding for the Australian Surfing Festival to be held held in Tweed Heads at a 4-day event. Good luck Harrison.

LIBRARY NEWS

Matt Stanton Visit

Last Wednesday was an extremely funny day in the Junior School Library! Author and Illustrator, Matt Stanton visited the K-6 students of Pittwater House. He spoke about how he uses his imagination to create his stories and the creative process he goes through with illustrations and text. To warm up the students’ imaginations they created a unique character using ‘this or that’ questions. For example, is it a boy or a girl, does it have big eyes or small eyes etc. The students loved stretching their imagination and were in balls of laughter the whole way through! Matt also read his newest and most frustrating picture book “The Book That Never Ends”.  Needless to say, we never got to the end!
