Principal's Message

Dear St Mary's School Community

Luke 18: 9-14

In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector.   The message behind this parable is that no matter how good a person may be, we are always in need of God’s grace and mercy.  Often those who are most humble and aware of their sinfulness and brokenness, are the ones who are most open to God’s love.

All Saints Day Mass

Next Friday, 1 November the Year 4 students will lead us in the Mass for All Saints at 9.00am in the Church.  All are welcome to attend.

Year 3 Reading at Mass

The Year Threes will be reading the 10.30am Mass on Sunday.  All are welcome to attend.

World Teachers Day 2019

Today is World Teachers Day in Australia. The day is a great opportunity for everyone to recognise and appreciate teachers and the important role they play in shaping the next generation.  We are very lucky at St Mary’s School to have excellent teachers who always give of their best at all times.  Thank you to the P&F who on behalf of the community gave all the staff a lovely gift in appreciation for all that they do.

Merredin College Year 12 Awards Ceremony

I had the pleasure of attending the Year 12 Graduation at Merredin College on Thursday evening, 24 October.  It was wonderful to see past students of St Mary’s School be awarded for their endeavour, commitment to their studies and achievements.  Congratulations to Jack Downsborough for receiving the Sportsperson of the Year and Maddison Lane for the Long Tan Youth Leadership & Teamwork Award, Highest Achiever General English and Highest Achiever General Visual Arts Award!

P & F Meeting

The last P&F Meeting for the year (before the AGM) will be held on Monday night at 7.30pm in the Library.  Please come along – it would be great to see a big turnout of families represented in support of the P&F.

Reminders for outstanding 2019 school fees were sent home on Monday.  Could I please ask that all outstanding fees are settled by the end of the Term Four, 13 December 2019.

Absence from School

I will be at a Budget Workshop at CEWA with Mrs Ryan next Friday, 1 November and Mrs Riethmuller will be at Reading Recovery PD.  On Monday, 4 and Tuesday, 5 November, Mrs Riethmuller and I will be at GEMS in Kalgoorlie.  Mrs Herbert will be responsible for the school during our absence.

2020 School Year

If you know that your child/children will not be returning to St Mary’s School in 2020, please advise the office, in writing, as soon as possible.  This allows us to make arrangements for the new school year.  This does not apply to families of Year Six students.

Thank You

A big thank you to the Shire of Merredin for upgrading the footpath outside St Mary’s School.  This makes it so much safer for our students and their families to ride, walk, skateboard or scooter to school!

Class News

Pre Primary RE Corner

In Pre-Primary we have begun the Religious education unit called 'I Can Talk to God' we started the unit by investigating the ways we can communicate with others, eg. by phone, face time or writing a letter. We then looked at people showing different emotions and discussed that we can communicate how we are feeling through the way we speak and our actions. We will finish the unit by exploring the idea that we communicate our love for God and others through prayer and kind actions.

Year Four Class News

In the Year Four class we are starting a new unit of work in Humanities and Social Sciences. We are learning about the history of Australia, in particular the First Fleet and the convict journey to our country. Last week we completed a QR code hunt, searching for facts to add to the historical narrative we will be constructing in the next few weeks. One of the QR codes took us to a video which we watched and found fascinating. If you would like to have a look yourself scan the link below.

Digital Technologies News

We have many interesting and varied activities planned for this term.

The Pre Primary students will look at different symbols and be introduced to some language that we use.  They will look at what an algorithm means and do some ‘unplugged’ activities.

The Year One students will do some revision of coding and look at the differences between hardware and software.

The Year Two students will look at the importance of computer security.  This will involve reporting on data in different ways.  They will also use the Show Me app to integrate their Science knowledge.

The Year Three students will look at what ‘information systems’ we have in our community.  They will look at the drag and drop coding, using a variety of sources.  The students will use the Show Me and Padlet app to show and share their knowledge.

The Year Four students will look at programming a project.  The students will use the Hopscotch and Popplet app to integrate Science and Digital Technology.

The Year Five students will become familiar with what a binary number is and why we use them.  The students will use the Hopscotch and the Padlet app to integrate the information.

The Year Six students will look at some ‘unplugged activities’ on binary numbers.  They will become familiar with online safety and the protocol to use when online.   They will use the Minecraft. Popplet and Padlet apps to integrate Science.

Green Day

The ‘Environmental Ministry’ met and suggested some ways that we could fundraise to purchase new recycle bins for the class.   One of the ideas was for the students to dress up in ‘green’ to raise awareness of looking after our school, local community and the environment.

It was a great effort by all staff and students and we are looking forward to purchasing some more recycle bins.
