Term 4 Calendar UPDATED

From the Principal, Ms Hanson

Remembrance Day Commemorations

Next week we will commemorate Remembrance Day at school with a special Stage 3 service run by our school leaders on Tuesday that we will video for our K-4 classes to share in classrooms on Wednesday.

Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the German signing of the Armistice, which concluded hostilities in World War One (1914-1918); the ceasefire taking effect “at the 11th hour of the 11th day on the 11th month”. As a mark of respect, we will observe one minute silence in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.

Our students have been busy making poppies in preparation to wear next week!

Thank you to Mr Matthewson for coordinating our special school commemoration this year.

Congratulations Ryder W in KG!

We were recently notified that Ryder W of KG was successful in winning a category in this year's Koori Kids "2020 ANZAC School Initiatives" Colouring In/ Poster Design Competition.

This competition was open to all primary school students and over 63, 490 creative entries from schools were received!

Congratulations Ryder! We are very proud of you and look forward to presenting you with your special prize medal next week at our Monday assembly.

Our Year 6 happy campers are so excited to head off to the Great Aussie Bush Camp!

After a series of postponements this year, our Year 6 students and teachers are very excited to be able to head off to the Great Aussie Bush Camp at Tea Gardens next week.

School camp is an absolute highlight of primary schooling and I know the students will return home with many wonderful memories.

With so many fabulous activities on offer, I am sure they will have a fabulous time and we look forward to hearing all of their camp tales on their return!

#MathsTrainsBrains- DoE launches the Everyday Maths Hub

The NSW DoE has recently launched a new campaign aiming to shift attitudes towards mathematics, encouraging our students and their parents to embrace the incredibly important subject because we use maths in almost everything we do.

The campaign is part of the broader NSW Mathematics Strategy, which is supporting schools and students to succeed in a critical subject for students' education. A key element of this campaign is a suite of new resources to help our parents and carers inspire students love for mathematics.

The resource hub, Everyday Maths, is a NSW-first, aimed at involving parents and carers in their children's mathematics learning, and supporting them to feel more confident in talking with their child about mathematics.

Be sure to have a look!

End of Year Activities/ Celebrations

We are busy planning for our end of year activities and celebrations! Although we are all hopeful that restrictions will continue to ease, the lead in time necessary to prepare for larger scale events and the fact that we don't really know what things may look like, means we are planning our activities within the guidelines as they currently stand. If restrictions ease, we will be able to modify plans accordingly.  As a result, our end of year activities, celebrations and presentation events will look different for 2020.

We will be holding two days of "Celebration/ Presentation of Awards" assemblies in stage groupings. On Wednesday 9 December, we will host our Kindergarten Graduation and Presentation Assembly at 10am, followed by our Stage 1 (Year 1 and 2) Presentation Assembly at 11:30am.  On Thursday 10 December, we will host our Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) Presentation Assembly at 9:30am followed by our Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6) Presentation Assembly at 11:30am. At this point in time, we will livestream these assemblies to families. More details will be sent home closer to the events.

Excitingly, our Year 6 celebrations can go ahead- although these will look different depending on the guidelines closer to the time.

Additionally, our school Picnic Day will look a little different this year as grades will be planning for their own "in school picnic day" activities. These will be different for each grade and may not all be on the same day, so please keep an eye on the Beacon, the ever evolving calendar and your emails for further details.

School Planning for 2021!

As we plan for next year it is vital that we have accurate data regarding definite enrolments. Changes to enrolments can make a significant difference in terms of staffing, classroom accommodation and actual class formations. So please, if you are moving to another other area next year and have children not returning to us in 2021, we would appreciate you notifying the school office. Similarly, if you plan to start your child in Kindergarten next year and you have not yet enrolled him or her, or completed all documentation, then please contact the school office as a matter of priority as our Kinder 2021 children will soon commence their transition to school program.

From time to time we have families who extend their holiday and will therefore not return to school at the commencement of the school year. It is imperative that the school receives notification, in writing, that the children are returning to school prior to the end of first term, if they are to be included in the numbers that are submitted to the DoE. So, if you are extending your holiday, please complete the form below with as much information as possible regarding return to school dates. It is important that this information is in writing and signed by parents/ carers.

COMMUNITY FORUMS- SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANNING

Thank you so much to the parents/ carers who recently completed the Tell them From Me parent survey. We really value your input and completing the survey is one way that community ‘voice’ can be heard! As the 2020 school year and current school planning cycle draws to a close, a key focus for our school is thoroughly evaluating our current strategic directions as well as preparing for the development of our 2021-2024 Strategic Improvement Plan.

We have established a BHPS School Improvement Team comprising staff and community members and we are currently seeking more interested parents/ carers to join this team to participate in community forums during Term 4.

If this is something that you would be interested in, please email us at school on beaconhill-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au, providing your name and contact information as well as your child’s name and class.

We are looking to host these forums via Zoom throughout the term. However, we are also exploring other opportunities to gather feedback. We look forward to hosting similar forums with our students as well!

Covid-19 Information for Parents and Carers

The Department regularly updates their website to reflect the current health advice and to ensure the community is informed of the expectations on school sites for students, staff and the community. The information can also be accessed using the link below.

NAIDOC WEEK

NSW public schools celebrate NAIDOC Week (8 – 15 November) with the theme ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’.

It’s a time to reflect and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of the First Nation peoples – recognising them as the traditional owners of the land.

Throughout the week we will learn about and celebrate the histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through classroom lessons and video live streams hosted by Aboriginal Education and Communities.

Opportunity Class Placement Test

The Opportunity Class Placement Test, for entry into Year 5 2021, will be held at our school on the morning of Wednesday 18 November, 2020. Year 4 students sitting the test must arrive at school before 9.00am. The test will be held in 4/5T's classroom. An information pack for parents and students was sent home yesterday with anyone who has registered for this test.  Please read this information carefully and contact Mrs Walsh if you have any further questions.

Changes to our School Reports

Semester 2 academic reports will be available on Friday 11 December, 2020. The reports will take a format similar to semester one, although they will be more detailed in order to reflect individual progress against specific learning outcomes.

Individual performance is measured against stage appropriate outcomes, with achievement determined by the administering of quality assessment for, as and of learning. Students receive the grade that best matches the standard of their demonstrated achievement against the outcomes.

Our reports have been redesigned, in line with DoE policy, to provide a clearer picture of student progress and attainment; based on parent and teacher feedback. The new report format will show student achievement against descriptors within each key learning area and the next steps required to move forward with their learning.

Fabulous FLURO Friday!

Last Friday the school turned fluro, as we celebrated World Teacher's Day by dressing in our brightest, most colourful outfits. There was a rainbow of colour everywhere we looked!

Debating

After an outstanding performance this year in the NSW Premier’s Debating Challenge, our year 6 team’s season has ended. Congratulations to the team for their determination and commitment that saw us make the finals. Thank you to Isobel, Emily, Brie, Aleisha and Abby for an amazing year.

Now that this year’s Premier’s Debating Challenge has concluded, it’s time to think about getting ready for next year. Students in years 3, 4 and 5 who are interested in debating and public speaking are invited to attend the Debating Lunch Club. This will be held each Monday lunch time in the KW classroom. We will be having lots of fun learning the basics about debating but also playing lots of games to help build confidence and skills in public speaking. Everyone in year 4 and year 5 are welcome!

Ethics Volunteers Needed

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO TEACH ETHICS AT BEACON HILL PUBLIC

We are seeking volunteers so that we can provide ethics classes for all the families who have requested it for their children. This could be a parent or grandparent, or someone from the local community with an interest in lifelong learning and rapport with children.  Volunteers undergo a free online training course from Primary Ethics, the not-for-profit organisation approved to design curriculum and training for the ethics program, and then teach for half an hour a week. In ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments with evidence, rather than act according to blind habit or peer pressure. Full lesson materials are provided. The curriculum is fully developed and approved by the Department of Education and volunteers find it a positive and rewarding experience. If you are looking for an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to our school and to find out more, please contact Tammy Anthonisz, the Northern Beaches Regional Manager, at tammy.anthonisz@gmail.com (ph. 0414 763 907) or visit www.primaryethics.com.au

New email domain for POP notifications to parents

Parents will now receive email notifications via POP from your school’s email address in the following format:

The word ‘banking’ has been added to ensure that each email sent is DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance) verified and parents can trust the email is not a hoax.

Northern Beaches and Lower North Shore school bus changes

In the coming months changes will be made to some bus and school routes and timetables in Sydney’s Northern Beaches and Lower North Shore to improve travel times and frequency of services on key routes and to give customers more choice around how they travel.

These changes have been led by Transport for NSW, who are working closely with State Transit to ensure we are delivering services where and when they are needed. We have also used Opal data and feedback from customers and stakeholders to inform the changes.

There maybe some changes to your local school services and students may need to change their current travel patterns.
