West Lakes Shore School Newsletter

Term 2, Week 2 2020

LEADERSHIP CORNER

Dear Families,

It has been such a positive start to Term 2. We have been delighted to see so many children (over 90%) happy to be back at school with their friends and focused on their learning.

We thank all families for their ongoing support throughout the past few months. For families of children still 'Learning at Home' please keep in contact with your child's classroom teacher and we will endeavour to continue to support your needs to the best of our abilities. This will be adapted as our attendance has substantially increased. Please follow any communication from class teachers regarding learning packs. If these are being supplied they can now be collected from the front office. If you are sending children back to school please ensure the front office staff are notified via the eforms in Skoolbag or the school attendance email dl.1246.info@schools.sa.edu.au

Please also ensure you use these methods to report absences of any kind. This is extremely helpful as we are trying to reduce the administration load on classroom teachers as they focus on planning and delivering their quality learning programs and supporting families with learning queries.

New Staff

We welcome Jarrod Wilson who was the successful applicant for our permanent grounds person role. Jarrod joins us with a wealth of skills and experience in grounds, buildings and maintenance and is already working extremely hard to ensure our grounds and school continue to look great. If you see him around don't forget to say hello and make him feel welcome.

Hats

During Term 2 and 3 hats are optional during recess, lunch and outdoor learning times. There are certain days when the UV may be high and hats would still be required. Please ensure your child still has their hats in school to ensure they can access these if needed.

Bikes and Scooters

A number of families have raised concerns about students of West Lakes Shore School riding bikes at speed past small children on footpaths. Students have also been noticed riding bikes across crossings and through the school yard. Please can you speak with your child, if they ride to school, and strongly encourage them to ride bikes and scooters safely, especially on shared paths

It is great to see so many of our children being active but please remember to stay safe. Bikes or scooters left in bike racks at the end of the school day will be left and locked in there overnight.

Update on Site Protocols to support COVID-19

We thank families for your continued support with changes at drop off and collection times. We are hopeful we can soon return to enabling all families back on site as we value our strong sense of community and face to face communication opportunities. One thing we have noticed, however, and would strongly continue to encourage it, is children are developing fabulous independence as they organise their own belongings and get ready for the school day outside classrooms.

Be Strong, Be Kind and Stay Safe,

Carol, Helen, Fay and Rozika

2021 ENROLMENTS

West Lakes Shore is now accepting enrolment enquiries for vacancies in all year levels, especially Reception, in 2021.

We strongly encourage families who know of others wanting a place in Reception, or other year levels in 2021, to enquire with our enrolment officer, Janet Massey.

Please see the attached enrolment flyer and forward this on to any interested families. We currently have a small number of vacancies in different year levels for any families wishing for their child/ren to be considered for a current vacancy.

SCHOOL LEAVERS 2020

For current families whose child/ren are taking up an alternate school place in 2021 please email janet.massey644@schools.sa.edu.au, as soon as possible. This supports our whole school staffing and class structure processes and helps us to provide your child with the best possible transition.

INTERNATIONAL NURSE DAY - FUNDRAISER

SUPERHERO DAY - GOLD COIN DONATION

All around the world, nurses are working tirelessly to provide the care and attention people need, whenever and wherever they need it. Never before have we realised the heroic status of our nurses and heath care workers in the current health pandemic.

Here at West Lakes Shore we’d like to do our bit to support and recognise the hard working nurses and health care workers that have faced such a challenging time over the past couple of months, so on Tuesday, 12 May 2020 we would like all of our students and staff to come to school dressed as SUPERHEROES to show our appreciation.

Don't forget you can select essential worker dress ups, or other dress ups and bring along a gold coin donation - it's a small way to give back to our frontline workers.  Staff and students will deliver coffee vouchers to the Royal Adelaide Hospital to the value of donations received.

PARKING AROUND SCHOOL

Parking rules and regulations - Reminder to all Families

Since a number of students have returned to school, the City of Charles Sturt has received concerns regarding the parking around schools.  The unfolding situation relating to COVID-19 has had a significant impact on our community and resulted in many changes, including around arrangements for drop off and pick of children.

Please make sure you are following the road rules and obeying signs etc around the school zone.

  • Parking in the 2 minute 'Kiss and Drop' zone at the front of the school during peak times and coming into the office. You must remain with your vehicle.
  • Do not stop on the crossing at the front of the school to pick up or drop off children - this is dangerous.  Move into the 'Kiss and Drop' zone.
  • Do not park on yellow lines or block neighbourhood driveways

Please click on the link below for more information about safety around schools.
