Principal Message

NAIDOC Day

What a fantastic day of connection, belonging and learning to celebrate NAIDOC day.  Congratulations to our students who received Deadly awards, presented quality work and were part of the One Vision showcase for our NAIDOC assembly. Special thanks to Naomi Moran from the Koori Mail for her inspiring speech about this year’s NAIDOC theme Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! The theme encourages all of us to champion change, while celebrating those who have already driven and led change in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities over generations. Special thanks to Mrs Newton for her excellent organisation of NAIDOC Day.

Class concerns & questions

If you have any particular concerns or questions it is generally best to contact your child’s classroom teacher as the first port of call, particularly if it is in relation to a classroom issue. Please feel free to contact your class teacher on Class Dojo or phone the school. For something you feel is more significant, please do not hesitate to contact one of our Assistant Principals: Mrs Golding for classes K-2, Mrs Titcume  for classes 3-6 and Learning and Support Mrs Newton.

Have a wonderful week.

Regards,

Larissa Polak

Schools Infrastructure Update

The Northern Rivers Flood Recovery Program has started conducting site inspections at flood-impacted schools. In the next fortnight, the architect, planner, project manager, cost manager, structural engineer and environment consultant will visit the Lismore South PS site. Additional consultants will attend the school as we advance through the procurement process.

Kindergarten Transition

We are getting ready for our Kindergarten Transition Program which will start early next term with 5 special visits for preschoolers ready to start school in 2023. If you know anyone who is in our area who is ready for Kindergarten next year, please get them to contact us so we can share all the details with them.

Adoles-sense Program Yr 5 & 6

Year 5 and 6 will participate in the Adoles-sense sexuality and relationship program designed to help students be better able to make sense of the changes that come with puberty. Using a variety of multi-faceted techniques that include art therapy, role play and counselling strategies, kids learn about these changes in a safe and structured program that is also fun!

When: 15th-16th August (in class)

Aims:

·       To develop and maintain a positive self-concept

·       To understand self-awareness and identify feelings and ways to manage strong emotion

·       To identify the changes that come with puberty including physical, emotional and social and ways to deal with these changes

·       To look at personal safety issues and protective behaviours

·       To develop bystander awareness and peer support relationships

·       Yr 5 Program 2 sessions /  Yr 6 Program 3 sessions

Book Week is coming

It is time to get your creative minds working and plan your Book Week character costume. Our character dress up day will be Tuesday 23rd August.

School Photos

School and Preschool photos will be taken on Thursday, 1st September.  Photos need to be pre-ordered and paid for prior to photo day.  Order envelopes will be sent home on Monday 15th August.  Any orders placed prior to the flood will be honoured.  If you are not sure if you previously placed an order, please call the school office.

Seeking a Replacement for Story Dog Maggie

Hi, I’m Maggie the Story Dog and Anne and I will be retiring at the end of this year after 6 years at Lismore South Public School.  I will be 12 years old in October and that means I will be 84 years old in ‘human’ years (phew, I need a nap just thinking about it)!  Most humans retire much earlier but not me as I have a really important job helping children to read.  Anne is hoping to recruit and train the next “Story Dog Team” so if anyone you know who has 2 hours per week to spare and a friendly pooch like me then contact Anne via email on anne@storydogs.org.au.  You can also check out the Story Dogs website on www.storydogs.org.au

COVID Cases - please notify us

Positive tests must be reported to the school and via the Services NSW App. Positive cases are required to isolate for 7 days. If you or your children are unwell, they should stay at home. Adults entering our school site are asked to wear a mask whilst indoors. Your assistance with this is appreciated as we continue to try and keep students, staff and the community well during the winter months. If you have any questions or concerns or require clarification, please contact the school.

Bus Service Reminder

Parents and carers are reminded that the Bulzomi bus leaves Kyogle Street at 8.45am.  School staff arrive at 8.30am to support supervision at the bus stop. Alternatively, the Platypus bus from Northern Rivers Buslines is available as an alternative to get your child to and from school each day.  The Platypus bus departs Phyllis Street at 8.20am each day and will drop students at Goonellabah PS.  This bus returns to Lismore South PS bus stop after 3.30pm each day.

Ngulliboo Jarjums Preschool

This Week at Preschool

This week we have been celebrating NAIDOC week. To support our learning we read "Fair Skin Black Fella" written by Renee Fogorty, then selected our skin tone pencil to sketch our self portraits. We have created Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, made clay echidnas, decorated gum leaves to create a beautiful wreath, painted seed pods, and made sand pictures using indigenous symbols and patterns.

Late Collections

Preschool collection is at 2:45pm. We understand unexpected delays in collecting children on time can occur occasionally. However, in this instance we kindly ask that you contact the main school office via telephone to ensure educators receive your message (as we may not always receive Dojo messages in a timely manner).

Athletics Day Highlights

The sun was shining and so were the smiles on the faces of students at our annual Athletics Carnival. A huge thank you to Mrs Golding and Mrs Taylor for their organisation.

NAIDOC Assembly - Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!

Flu Season

If your child is unwell, please do not send them to school. That includes if your child had vomiting or diarrhoea the night before, they must not attend for at least 24 hours after symptoms have eased. If they are coughing or have any flu-like symptoms they must not attend. If children come to school and are obviously unwell, you will be contacted to pick them up.
