Term 2 Week 8

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

TVCS is Year 7 Ready!

As from Term 1, 2022 all Year 7 school students in South Australia will be taught in high school.

Currently, South Australia is the only state where Year 7s undertake their education in a primary school setting. Moving Year 7 to high school is a significant change for our system, allowing South Australia to align its’ educational practice with the rest of the nation and pedagogy with the Australian Curriculum.

And Torrens Valley Christian School is ready!

In fact, the benefits of Year 7 in a secondary setting have been enjoyed by our students for more than 25 years!

Torrens Valley Christian School has firmly believed in the significant advantages of Year 7 education in a secondary setting since 1994 when our Year 7 students moved to Secondary School and our Middle School was established.

We believe young people are ready for the learning opportunities provided in a secondary setting.  Access to specialist staff and facilities promote a greater depth of learning, challenge and growth. At this age, socially and emotionally, young people are ready for more independence and can further their learning with specialist teachers in specialist facilities.

We are committed to ensuring our students have access to the best learning conditions for young adolescents, with our teachers and leaders providing innovative delivery of key system activities such as school and workforce planning.

Our vast experience in this area has shown us that Year 7 students are ready and eager to embrace all the learning opportunities present in a secondary setting:

·         Specialist subject teachers.

·         Increased range of subjects.

·         Extensive co-curricular offerings.

·         Engagement with Middle School pastoral and curriculum programs.

·         Access to specialist facilities and grounds.

·         Exposure to leadership programs.

·         Development of organisational skills and personal responsibilities.

Our Middle School students enjoy specifically created programs and learning areas as well as state-of-the-art facilities in our Design & Technology Centre, Music Studios, Science Laboratories, Home Economics Kitchens, gymnasium, weights room and library collaborative learning spaces …. just to name a few!

I am proud of the exceptional educational opportunities we provide at TVCS as we partner with you in developing young people to BELIEVE, BELONG and BECOME all that God created them to be…. to the glory of God.

Yours in Christ’s service

Tribute to Julie McGinley

On 24th May, beloved member of our community, Mrs Julie McGinley (Secondary Deputy Principal, Fergus McGinley’s wife), passed away suddenly leaving us devastated by this tragic news. I pay tribute to Julie and the many contributions she has made to our community, as a parent, friend and a member of our Association. We deeply grieve her loss and are continuing to uphold Fergus and his family in our prayers, asking for Gods peace and comfort at this time of loss.

In honour of our deep love we hold for the McGinley family, a special dedication was made to Julie at the musical production of Annie.

God’s Word offers us great hope at sad times like these, strength for today and hope for the days to come. It is our prayer that all those who are grieving will experience this strength and hope for themselves and that God will comfort us at this sad time of loss.

Germany Trip 2019

Our life changing journey began back on Wednesday night 10th April Week 10, in Term One. The 7th TVCS school trip to Germany departed for an adventure which was to last 3.5 weeks. The group was of comprised 12 students, 2 staff – Frau Belinda Allen and Mr Daniel Crook plus retired teacher Herr Roger Allen.

We began our trip with 3 days in Berlin - the lively and colourful capital of Germany which has such deep history. We visited the parliament building, the famous Brandenburg Gate, site of the Berlin Wall and many other infamous sights in this bustling city. It was an exciting start to our journey and everyone was thrilled to finally be in Germany. Students were enjoying the opportunity to put their German into practice and loved trying the local food and drink. We were also greeted with freezing weather of 4-6 degrees during the day which was a shock to our system bur equally a cool experience.

We then were off on our amazing exploration of this stunning country along with Austria and Switzerland spanning approximately 2 weeks. The various destinations included medieval Nuremberg where we stayed in the old stables of an medieval castle, had a walking tour including the home of famous German artist Albert Dürer and visited the Nazi Rally Parade Grounds; a day trip to the Gem of the Middle Ages Rothenburg where we were delighted to find a Lindt Chocolate store with a vast array of different varieties from back home; Salzburg in Austria including a Sound of Music tour and visit back across the border to the beautiful alpine lake - the Königssee; and the Untersberg Mountain where most students experienced snow for the first time; stunning Grindelwald in Switzerland for three days which included a trip to Lucerne, a visit to the thunderous Trümmelbach Falls and our 2nd trip to the top of snow-covered alps the Schilthorn with 360° magnificent views over six countries.

These breathtaking sights gave us perspective into God's almighty magnificent creation. We then finished off to with a few days in the delightful, pretty city of Munich which included a trip visit to the Dachau concentration camp – a sobering experience, but then a fun evening swimming the Olympic pool. All such wonderful experiences and a great atmosphere.

Finally it was off to Bremen in North Germany for our long awaited 7 day homestay and school visit. The beginning of the week was full of nerves and uncertainty as the German and Australian students alike were both excited and nervous to meet for the first time on the train platform of Bremen, Frau’s beloved city where she lived as a teenager for one year. But by the end of the week, however, many lifelong strong relationships had been formed and as we gathered on the same train platform to depart for the River Rhine 7 days later, many tears and long hugs we shared. During that one week cultural visit, we were guests at the local school, Lise-Meitner-Schule, and we were very well received. We presented the school with the Australian flag and other trinkets from our local MP Mr Tony Zappia. The homestay week in Bremen provided many opportunities to see the cultural life and language in everyday situations. This was both challenging and exciting and all students have fond memories of their German host family and they are still in touch. The farewell evening was touching as both guests and hosts shared how much the experience meant to them.

Our last few days were spent on the River Rhine in the gorgeous little town of Kaub where we enjoyed a Rhine Cruise, a tour of medieval castle the Marksburg which was never destroyed in battles over the centuries, and experiencing quintessential Germany with a visit to a little medieval town Rüdesheim going up a chair lift to the top of the Rhine cliffs. Our final evening was in the large and modern city of Frankfurt before an early flight home taking 2 flights of approximately 20 flight hours in total.

In summary, each day on our adventure was a highlight in itself and the students and staff experienced such a variety of experiences that I could take up the whole newsletter and still would not have covered everything! It was wonderful delight to see each student grow in their self-confidence and the ability to manage themselves in this experience and witness German culture, history and language firsthand.

Planetarium and SA Museum Excursion

Last week we had a fantastic excursion to the Planetarium and the SA Museum. We marvelled at the night sky in all its glory in the Planetarium. We watched a movie on the dome ceiling called Wild Weather and learnt about the weather on the planets in our Solar System It was breath taking! Then we moved on to the SA Museum and enjoyed learning about the hostility of the Antarctic environment and  in particular the trials of the Australian explorer Douglas Mawson and his crew. Truly inspiring! A special thank you to our Parent Helpers on the day Mrs Dixon, Mrs Ellis and Mrs Harding Browne.

Year 9 Altitude Day

On Thursday 6th June I was lucky enough to accompany 12 Year 9 students to Altitude Leadership Conference. Alititude Day, held at the Adelaide Convention Center, runs annually and TVCS has been involved for many years now. Facilitated by yLead, Altitude Day’s purpose is to empower Year 9 students to make positive choices, unlock potential and build their confidence through hearing from inspirational speakers and interactive activities with other Year 9 students from Adelaide schools. Project Potential, one of the sessions students listened to, was based around actioning leadership and challenged students to; discover passion, challenge themselves, recruit mentors, make a plan and action it, have a champion mindset and never give up. I was so proud of the students representing Torrens Valley Christian School for immersing themselves in the day, embracing the activities and mixing with other students. Well done Tom, Hartley, Gabriel, Sarah, Elise, Chelsea, Cara, Marcus, Lara, Rachel, Zach and Isaac.

TVCS Mock Trial Team Round 3 Results

Congratulations to our TVCS Mock Trial Team who defeated the Norwood Morialta Team in Round 3 of the Law Society of South Australia Mock Trial Competition on Tuesday last week. The case, D Rogan v As The Crow Flies, explored a very current issue. The matter involved a claim for unpaid leave entitlements upon termination—essentially, the parties were in dispute as to whether the Applicant was in fact an employee of the Respondent and thus entitled to leave. The Applicant, Ms Rogan, argued that she was an employee of the Respondent; the Respondent, our client As The Crow Flies, successfully argued that the Applicant was an independent contractor, using her own drone (the Green Dragon) to make uber-eats-style deliveries.

This concludes our Mock Trial participation for 2019. Well done to all the students who participated this year: Zac, Jasmine, Elise, Daniel, Maria, Jemma, Naomi, Renee, Megan, Yurui, Joson, Adele, and our regular supporter, Alana. We also had excellent support from our solicitor, Ms Laira Krieg, who regularly visited our Legal Studies lessons to guide the students on legal aspects and thoughtfully answered every question the students asked about what it is like to follow a career in law.

Mrs Lynda Pierce, TVCS Mock Trial Facilitator

Parent Events: Career Conversations

This term we introduced some new events with the view to resourcing and supporting Secondary School parents with information (and inspiration) to enhance family conversations around subject choices and careers.

Feedback from the first two events has been very positive.  100% of parents who attended last week’s Middle School event reported that they would recommend this event to their friends.

Comments included:

“Godly perspective, practical & personal relevant and current”

“It’s a good resource for both parents and students”

“Thank you very informative. Great to know how different SACE is now and the large range of career options available in Year 12”

Families who missed these events have the opportunity to attend “Part Two” on Tuesday June 18th with our guest presenter Tony Duggan from Adelaide University as well as a panel of past scholars and parents of past scholars.

Resources from the events can be found on the Parents section of the TVCS Careers Website www.tvcscareers.com.au

Scholastic Literacy Pro.

Our Primary students love to read. Reading improves children’s general knowledge, vocabulary and comprehension, concentration and focus. Reading also helps children relax, develop imagination and supports their general wellbeing. During the first half of this year, our Primary students have been working hard to read as many books as they can. They entered the Scholastic Literacy Pro competition and came 2nd overall in South Australia by reading over 20 million words altogether!

Our top students (those who read the most number of words) received a $10 book voucher and a book, so they can keep reading. Those students were:

Jason – Year 3

Brendan – Year 4

Tahlia – Year 5

Jael – Year 6

Congratulations to all our Primary students. We are very proud of you all and are excited that you are learning to love reading.

Caroline Duell, Primary Deputy Principal

Year 9 Political Campaign

National Christian School Games

In Week 4 of this term, three Torrens Valley Christian School students attended the National Christian Schools Games, held on the Gold Coast, representing South Australia.

Nicholas represented SA in tennis, winning a Silver medal in the Teams Event.

Matthew was the Goalkeeper for the Bronze-medal-winning Boys Soccer team.

Jo was a member of the Boys Basketball Starting five and, although he didn’t come home with a medal, he scored a 3-point basket on the siren to force the bronze-medal playoff into overtime!

Staff member, Mr Matthew Tucker coached the SA Boys Basketball team at the Carnival.

The boys flew out on the Monday and attended a gala dinner and dolphin show at Seaworld that night, before embarking on three days of tough competition against teams from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. On the Thursday night, celebrating a big week, the SA contingent undertook a dinner/river cruise around the Gold Coast waterways, before spending the Friday at Movieworld and returning home late that evening.

The next National Christian Schools Games will be held in 2021, so stay tuned for information early next year!

Matthew Tucker, Secondary PE

SACSA Netball

Friday week 7 the year 8/9 girls went to the SACSA netball carnival in the city. They had 5 games in the minor round and won 3 of them by more than 6 goals. They lost 2 by one goal on the siren each time. The girls played well together and all of the girls played wherever they were asked and put the team first. Due to the big margins they won by they ended up 2nd in the pool. They played the semi final and won by 1 point.

They then went to the grand final and played against Prescot college. The weather had been cold by dry for most of the day and as soon as the grand final started, it poured with rain. Playing under wet and windy conditions the girls won the grand final by 1 point! So all 10 players received an individual medal and the champion trophy for the school.

The team was Mary, Chelsea, Isabel, Shayla, Mia, Shayla, Lara, Rachel, Abbey and Gemma.
