Sutton Public School

Week 10 Term 3 - 27th September

School resumes for teachers and students on Monday 14th October

Principal's Welcome

Canberra Rotary Peace Bell

Year 6 students have had the opportunity to take part in a tour of Lennox Gardens and visit the Canberra Rotary Peace Bell. Students were invited to ring the Canberra Rotary Peace Bell to recognise World Peace Day 2019.  World Peace Day is held on the third Tuesday of September each year.

The tour gave students  a brief outline of the history of Lennox Gardens, a tour of the Beijing Gardens, the Canberra Nara Peace Park and the Canberra Rotary Peace Bell.

The Canberra Rotary Peace Bell is a replica of the original World Peace Bell gifted to the United Nations in New York by Chiyoji Nakagawa in 1954 and is one of 24 World Peace Bells located around the world.

Now that our school has  visited the Canberra Rotary Peace Bell and taken part in a Peace Ceremony,  the Rotary Club of Bungendore will arrange for a Peace Pole to be donated to our school to sit within school grounds.   Rotary aim to place 100 Peace Pole in 100 Schools to recognise 100 years of Rotary Service in Australia due in 2021.  Once the pole is on site, Year 6 will lead Year 5 students, our future leaders, in and inaugural peace ceremony.  We look to our future leaders to build a tradition of recognising world peace day each September.

Thank you to Mr Michael Rabey of the Canberra Rotary Club for his informative and enjoyable tour and memorable ceremony. Thank you also to the Bungendore Rotary Club for their support.

P&C NEWS – WEEK 10, TERM 3 2019

A huge congratulations to Abbey and Lorissa for organising a fantastic Games Show Night on Saturday. Although ticket sales weren't what we hoped they would be, we still managed to make a profit thanks to the efforts of Abbey and Lorissa and the willingness of all who attended to get involved in various games on the night. Most importantly, a fantastic night was had by all who attended, and we got to see Mr Reed's moonwalk.

Thank you also to everyone who volunteered and baked for Grandparents Day, especially those who stepped in to coordinate baked goods, recruit volunteers and work in the kitchen at the last minute.

The NEXT MEETING of the P&C is TERM 4, WEEK 3, THURSDAY 31st October at 7pm.

Please remember all are welcome, however if you can’t attend but would like something added to the agenda, please contact the P&C via email (suttonpublicschool@pandcaffiliate.org.au.) or on our Facebook page (@SPSPandCAssociation) to discuss.

Don’t forget we post all relevant P&C information and our events on our Facebook page, in the newsletter, on the noticeboard next to Kindergarten and via Skoolbag and all meeting minutes are available via the School website and upon request.

MURRUMBATEMAN FIELD DAYS - The Murrumbateman Field Days are coming up on the weekend of OCTOBER 19th & 20th and we are once again seeking volunteers to help with the Parcel Delivery Service fundraiser that Sutton PS has had the opportunity to run in recent years.

If you are planning on attending the Field Days and can spare a few hours on either day, please contact Sophie Davis on parcelpickupsps@hotmail.com or download the form from Skoolbag.

MANGOES - With mango season just around the corner, the MANGO FUNDRAISING DRIVE is returning in Term 4. Keep an eye out for order forms which will come home in the next couple of weeks. This year we are looking for someone to help Jen Takiari with the distribution of the mangoes on their arrival date as well as someone to learn the ropes of the drive and take over from Jen after this year.

If you are interested in either or both of these jobs, please contact the P&C on suttonpublicschool@pandcaffiliate.org.au or via our Facebook page.

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO WRITE A GRANT REQUEST? The P&C are looking for one or more people who are interested in helping us seek grants for funding different projects around the school. You don’t have to be a member of the P&C to volunteer and will be provided support by the Association and School. Currently we’re looking for someone to enter a grant round with Grillex who is giving schools a chance to win a $10,000 outdoor makeover. The grant round will close on 29th November.

SUTTON COUNTRY FAIR 2020 - Next term will see the P&C begin planning for our next Fair, which is to be held in Term 1 on Saturday 28th March. The P&C are seeking a co-coordinator to work with Linda to run the Fair. This role will require a high level of commitment, however is a fun event to be involved in and is our major school fundraiser for the year. If we can’t find anyone to take on the co-coordinator role, the Fair may not be able to run in 2020, so please consider if you can donate some time and organisational skills.

(Note: you do not have to be a member of the P&C to take on this role).

Exciting News

As a result of a generous gift, the school took delivery of two outdoor tables with seating. These have been  placed adjacent to primary classrooms and are already in use. This new outdoor area will have many uses, especially in our Kitchen Garden program when we sit together and share a tasting menu. The school gratefully acknowledges the generosity of Lorraine Skowronski, grandparent of, Luca, Zoe and Charlotte A, and Sam Bingley, Weerona Welding, for his workmanship.
