Dear Parents and Carers,

Week 9 is proving to be a very full week.  On Monday we had Andrea Rowe, the winning author of the CBA Picture Book of the Year, visit to read her book and talk about how she gets her ideas and the writing process.  She provided great insights into the way she uses words to engage the reader's 5 senses and to create movement that the reader can identify with.

Today we supported the R U OK! campaign by wearing Yellow and donating a gold coin. The mental wellbeing of all members of our school community is important to us.

This week is National Child Protection Week.  On 1 July Ministerial Order 1359 took effect. All DOBCEL schools to have updated policies to meet the new minimum requirements as specified by Ministerial Order 1359 and the eleven new Child Safe Standards.  These policies are available on our website.

Child Safety is Everybody’s Responsibility

As parents of children in Catholic schools, when you enrol your child, you should feel confident that their safety is a priority while at school and in the care of all members of the learning community. The care, safety and wellbeing of children is an essential and shared responsibility of everyone who attends, works or is involved in Catholic schools.

The Catholic Education Commission of Victoria (CECV) is committed to providing a safe and nurturing culture for all children and young people across all Victorian Catholic Schools.

At the heart of this commitment is Christ’s message of love, hope, justice and the innate dignity of each person.

At St. Patrick's we understand there are many areas of safety to consider when children are in their care. All schools have a duty of care to ensure children are learning, not only in a safe physical environment, but within a community that consists of a whole school culture of child safety, where respect, understanding and compassion for others is an integral part of all that we do.

To genuinely work in partnership with you throughout your child’s education, it is important that you are informed and aware of the improvement and the ongoing strengthening of child safe practices being implemented by the Victorian Government across all schools in Victoria.

In July 2021, the Victorian Government announced new Child Safe Standards to further strengthen child safe environments and protect children from abuse. 11 new Child Safe Standards and Ministerial Order No. 1359 came into effect for schools and school boarding premises on 1 July 2022. They replace Victoria’s seven previous Child Safe Standards and principles (Ministerial Order No. 870) in place since 2016.

Preventing and responding to child abuse requires a whole of community response to bring about broad cultural change. To this end, the Victorian Child Safe Standards apply to a broad range of organisations that provide services for children, including schools, churches, sporting clubs and youth services. The intention of the Child Safe Standards is to make organisations, including schools, consider and address child abuse situations and risks in an integrated and proactive fashion.

For schools, these child safe standards represent holistic education and organisational preventative measures in ensuring the safety of children and young people.

The new Child Safe Standards include new requirements, including:

  • the involvement of families and students in child safety efforts
  • focus on the safety of Aboriginal children and young people
  • management of the risk of child abuse in online environments
  • governance, systems and processes to keep students safe.

New Victorian Child Safe Standards

  • Culturally safe environments – Organisations establish a culturally safe environment in which the diverse and unique identities and experiences of Aboriginal children and young people are respected and valued.

    Visiting Author - Andrea Rowe

Andrea Rowe's Children's Picture Book  JETTY JUMPING  won the 2022 Children’s Picture Book of the YEAR – Early Reads section of the CBA Book Week Awards. It was inspired by her childhood in Port Fairy and is her first published children's story.

She has come from generations of Port Fairy / Moyne / Killarney families and while attending primary school in Warrnambool.  Her mum was a St Pat’s student, as was most of her family. All of Andrea's summers were spent in Port Fairy at the beach with her cousins.

She now lives on the Mornington Peninsula and the Jetty that features in her book, is the jetty at Rye.  The beginnings of her inspiration took shape on a fish and chip wrapper while watching her children jump off the end of the jetty.

Andrea read her book Jetty Jumping while demonstrating all of the jumping actions described in the book, which was very entertaining.

Her next book, Sunday Skating, will be released with Bright Light / Hardie Grant next year,
