FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week (3 to 10 July) is a time to reflect and celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, recognising them as the ongoing Custodians of the land.

The theme ‘Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!’ encourages all of us to champion change, while celebrating those who have already driven and led change in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities over generations.

To support and promote greater understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People and cultures in our school, we will celebrate NAIDOC week and Indigenous Children’s Day with cultural workshops delivered by the Aboriginal performing arts group, Koomurri, early next term.

Head Lice

In recent weeks there have been a few cases of head lice throughout the school. We ask that all parents/caregivers check their child’s hair and treat during the school holidays.

Below is a summary of helpful useful information:

  • Check your child’s head for lice behind the ears and forehead once a week in cooler weather.
  • Check particularly carefully in the week before school starts each term.
  • If you do find lice, ask the chemist for the correct shampoo to use. Please treat any other children in the family as well, just as a precaution. Bed linen, pillows, hairbrushes, cushions etc., will also need to be washed thoroughly and aired in the sun. Do not forget to also treat school hats!
  • Once your child’s hair has been treated correctly, the lice will be dead and the lice and eggs can be removed with a fine-toothed comb available from the chemist.
  • After initial treatment of hair is completed, it needs to be redone 10 days later.
  • Please ensure that girls with hair past their shoulders keep it tied back at all times.

If everyone can please check their child’s hair, we can help eradicate this very annoying problem from our school.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

COVID-19 Update

Dear school community,

NSW Health and the Department of Education would like to remind all parents, carers and the school community that now is the best time to protect your children against viral illnesses such as the flu and COVID-19 by staying home if unwell and getting vaccinated.

Protecting your family from the flu and COVID-19 this winter

Flu and COVID-19 can be serious illnesses, even in children and teenagers. Both viruses can spread quickly when large numbers of people are in close contact, such as at school.

More people of all ages will be at risk this winter with international borders reopening, increased social mixing and lower exposure to flu over the past two years. Both the flu and COVID-19 are already circulating in the community, so it’s important that you don’t put off vaccination.

Flu vaccines are free for all NSW residents aged 6 months and older in the month of June, as part of the NSW Government's effort to combat this year's expected severe influenza season. We strongly recommend that families take advantage of this opportunity. Vaccinations are available through GPs and pharmacies, and can be safely received at the same time as a COVID-19 vaccination.

The COVID-19 vaccination remains a recommendation for everyone aged 5 years and over, and is also available through GPs and pharmacies.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate

Our Year 6 students at Drummoyne PS have recently undertaken an educational tour of the national capital. As part of their study, students participated in many educational programs with a focus on Australia's history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program is an Australian Government initiative that provides financial assistance to support students’ on-site learning about national democratic, historical and cultural institutions in Canberra.
By visiting select locations in Canberra, DPS qualified for the rebate which is allocated on a per student basis. Once approved, the rebate will be paid directly to the school and will be held in trust as a contribution towards the cost of end of year activities for our Year 6 students.

Year 6 Canberra Overnight Excursion

Year 6 students had many wonderful learning opportunities last week on our three-day overnight excursion to Canberra. Students engaged in activities such as learning the voting process at the Electoral Education Centre, participating in role plays for the passing of a bill at Parliament House and they explored an interactive display of CSIRO's world leading research at the CSIRO Discovery Centre.

While our students benefited from actively participating in many sessions of learning, it was the personal benefits for each student that were immeasurable. Teachers observed new relationships being made across the grade and existing relationships deepen. The school values of respect and responsibility were seen day and night. Resilience was noticed in many cases and most clearly seen when students used their initiative to seek support, face their uncertainties and with teacher guidance, demonstrate the perseverance required. It’s in these moments we realise how much our students have matured and their camp experience was very much part of it.

Thank you to each of our families for partnering with us in the preparation for, and during the excursion. The behaviour of our students was commendable. Comments were made by staff at a number of venues as well as members of the public at Parliament House when our students wore their school uniform with pride. Thank you, parents and carers, for your support in meeting our expectations. Wonderful memories were created for our students and I would like to sincerely thank each of our Year 6 teachers along with Mr Neufeld and Mrs Thompson for their support and strong commitment to ensuring every student had a wonderful experience.

Have you ever been to the capital of Australia? If you haven’t, it is a wonderful place. One of the best things we did was visit the War Memorial. It was sad but interesting to learn about. My favourite thing was the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier because it represents all the soldiers that died and were not identified.  Aiden A, 6M

Have you ever met the Prime Minister? Well I haven’t either but I have been to the House of Representatives and I’ve seen the very chair where the PM sits. That was fun; our guide was very nice and made a few jokes as well. Did you know that anything that has the Australian Coat of Arms on it means you own it, but that it also belongs to 26 million other Australians, so you can’t break or sell it. Canberra was a great experience… just be prepared to wake up at 6.30 in the morning! Tom, 6M

Have you ever been to Canberra? If you haven’t, you need to book a trip right now! Year 6 went on an overnight excursion last week to see beautiful architectural buildings and landscapes. Our first stop was the Capital Exhibition Centre where we learnt lots about the design of Canberra. After that, we went to Old Parliament House and visited the Museum of Democracy and sat in the old House of Representatives. We had a great day! Taylor, 6M

I was so excited and we learnt so much, such as, a competition was held to design Canberra and the winners, Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin, had the lake they designed named after them. Michael, 6M

We drove around different streets and saw many different Embassies and High Commissions. I enjoyed seeing the styles of architecture. We also saw where the Prime Minister lives when he stays in Canberra.  Kayana, 6M

Day 2 was the biggest day. We had to wake up early because it was the day we got to go to the Australian Parliament. I was shocked at how big and modern it is. When we went into the House of Representatives and the Senate. I was surprised how much bigger they are compared to the old ones.  Ivan, 6M

MONTY’S MUNCH CANTEEN NEWS

Monty’s Munch Canteen

Recess orders have closed for Mondays & Tuesdays from Term 3

The canteen is closing recess orders on Mondays and Tuesdays starting from Term 3. As you may be aware, the busiest day in our canteen is Friday with over 200 lunch orders on average. Monday and Tuesday recesses are our quietest days with only a handful of orders. At the P&C meeting last month, it was decided to trial closing the canteen for recess orders only on Mondays and Tuesdays. Lunch service will continue unchanged. This will enable Catherine to work with Eugenie in the canteen on Fridays. We will still be relying on volunteer support on busy days but this change will provide some much-needed consistent support for Eugenie. This will begin from the start of Term 3.
Birthday Packs
Do you have a child's birthday coming up? The canteen now offers birthday packs to purchase for the class and the birthday child gets their item for free! Choose from the following options:
  • Quelch Sticks
  • Jelly Cups
  • Healthy Fruit Platter
Please go to School24 and select Lunch or Recess delivery and then select your items. Save yourself a last-minute trip to the shops!
