Principal's Column

Hello, Giinagay, Hai

Welcome to the Week 7 newsletter.

Brain Gym® is a program we use here at our school to help students to be willing, ready and able to learn.

Brain Gym® Benefits

Brain Gym® is a series of specific movements that activate the brain and body for particular skills of behaviour management and learning i.e. focus (action), organisation (feeling) and communication (thinking). The program improves the physical skills, rather than focusing on just the mental skills involved in behaviour and learning.

I am sure everyone who has an interest in Brain Gym® will be thrilled in this new research. It’s another step in the importance of Brain Gym® in uncovering the secrets of successful ageing.

A new study from researchers at the University of New South Wales compared the brains of cognitively healthy “super-agers” (aged 95+) to the brains of people in their 70s. They found the super-agers had stronger connectivity between the left and right sides of the brain.

More can be learnt at:  https://medicalxpress.com/news/2020-05-people-aged-stronger-brain.html

It has been very apparent to researchers over the years, working with people of all ages, that people who were ageing well (little or no signs of any Alzheimer’s/dementia) could successfully do Cross Crawl and many other Midline Movements.  Those with ageing issues had difficulties or were unable to do Cross Crawl at all i.e. already very homolateral with related switched-off issues.

Cross Crawl activates both sides of the brain and body at the same time to enhance the process of building a bridge through the corpus collosum to facilitate clear communication between the left and right hemispheres of the brain.

Doing Cross Crawl daily to improve the connections between the left and right side of the brain, appears to assist in successful ageing.  Done standing, Cross Crawl also activates the vestibular system to improve orientation in space in relation to body balance.  It also stimulates eye-hand coordination and eye-to-eye coordination.  This in turn, will also improve cognitive functioning.

Below is a representation of the actions of Cross Crawl.

What is school readiness?

School readiness refers to whether a child is ready to make an easy and successful transition into school. Lifetime Connect has made a Zoom webinar available addressing school readiness.

Please share with your friends who have children between the ages of 3 to 5 years. The presenter is Melinda Vander Reest, Senior Learning and Early Childhood Consultant with Early Life Foundations.  Click the link below to see the Meeting Recording along with the access password.

School News

Indonesian Corner

Students in 1/2 filled each other's buckets by writing something positive (in Indonesian) about each other. Some common descriptions were lucu (funny), ramah (friendly), baik-hati (kind), pintar (clever), senang (happy), kreatif (creative) and positif (positive).

Cultural and Performing Arts (CAPA) with Pak Mur

For the next few weeks, students will be doing some hands-on CAPA Indonesian activities with Park Mur. Students in Mrs B and Pak Chris' classes have started playing 'angklung' - bamboo instruments from West Java. The first lesson they learnt how to hold and play their instruments and experimented with different rhythms. Then some students had a go at conducting. Next they will be learning to play some well-known children's songs, both from Indonesia and Australia.

Students in Pak Adam's class are working on their dance moves, following the traditional dance style 'Randai' from West Sumatra. The students wear special pants which can be hit like a drum to create percussive sounds while dancing. As well as learning some traditional moves from Pak Mur, they also get to experiment and work in groups to create their own choreography. Keep an eye on FaceBook for some video clips!

Soap Making Workshop

The students in 2/3/4 have become expert soap makers!

The process involved mixing, cooking and moulding.

Now our class mums don't just look beautiful, they smell beautiful too.

Buddy Reading Program

Year 6 students are engaging in a buddy reading program with the Kindergarten students every Thursday after lunch. This is to support the great work they are doing with Bu Bettina and providing an opportunity for the Kindy students to share their skills in reading strategies!

Below are some lovely photos of the Kindy students reading with their buddy.

Chess club is back on!

Do yourself a favour and come to the 2/3/4 classroom at lunchtime each Tuesday.

It's the coolest way to social distance, ever.  Pak Chris.

Our Renovated Library opens on Thursday

A big thanks to Pak Karl and Uncle Ritchie for painting our Library.  What a difference a coat of paint can make.

The Library will be open on Thursday for all students to be able to borrow books.

Playgroup

Dear Community Partners

To keep our staff and families safe, Lifetime Connect management has made the difficult decision in keeping the supported playgroups suspended until Term 3, looking to return first day back, 21st July. Due to the 4 metre square per person restrictions, it is impossible to deliver playgroup responsibly.

Our wonderful playgroup staff are keeping connected with families as best they can, working tirelessly making weekly phone calls, sending out wonderful activity packs – we even have our very own private YouTube channel, for the staff to read stories, sing songs, demonstrate cooking and do music and movement.

Please contact me if you need to discuss anything in regards to playgroup.
