PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Please read below for some information on what has been happening and what we have to look forward to!

Kindy and Pre Primary Enrolments for 2020

We are currently taking enrolments for Kindy and Pre Primary classes in 2020. If you intend to enrol your child in either of these year groups, an application to enrol needs to be submitted to the front office by 26 July. We will then let you know if we are able to offer your child a place in either of those year groups by 9 August.

Please note: If your child is currently in one of our Kindy groups in 2019, whether or not you are in our local intake area, it is a Department requirement that you formally apply to re-enrol in Pre Primary for 2020.

Application forms to enrol in Pre-primary will be given to all current Kindy students next week. Please complete and send to the front office ASAP. Whilst you do not need to provide proof of identity if you have previously done so, you will need to provide updated copies of other items on the document list such as immunisation, proof of address and family court orders, where appropriate.

Whilst we would very much love to welcome all applicants into our school, unfortunately we cannot guarantee a place for students who live out of area. We will fill to our capacity by catering for students in the following order, as outlined in Department of Education Policy:

1.      In-area enrolments; then, if there is still capacity

2.      Out of area with a sibling at the school

3.      Out of area with no siblings in order of closest proximity to the school.

Attendance

At Scarborough PS, we want your child to achieve their very best. To get the best education, they need to attend school every day. Developing a habit of going to school every day is vitally important so your child does not miss out on important ideas and skills they need for future learning.

At Scarborough we monitor attendance by reviewing attendance levels of individuals over 3 week periods. Where a child has fallen below 90% attendance in consecutive attendance periods without a reasonable cause (see below) the school is required to notify parents via a letter. In some instances, this is just information to alert parents to the fact their child’s attendance has dropped. In others, where persistent low attendance is evident, the school may ask for a meeting with parents to find a solution and lift attendance levels.

Some letters will be sent home to families next week. Please contact me if you have any queries.

It is important that children stay home when they are unwell, as is outlined below and again further on in this newsletter. Our monitoring system takes this into consideration, as it only targets students whose attendance is low over consecutive 3 week blocks. Hence, if your child misses a week’s school with the flu in one monitoring period but their attendance is at acceptable levels in others, then it would not be cause for alarm.

The Department of Education provides the following guidance and information on attendance:

Why is going to school so important for my child?

•      At school, many concepts including literacy and numeracy are taught in a sequence. Missing school means missing out on learning – which can often make it difficult to catch up later. This is particularly important when essential foundation skills are being taught.

•      Going to school every day helps children learn the important life skill of ‘showing up’ – at school, at work, to sport and other commitments.

•      Research from the Western Australian Telethon Kids Institute shows that every day at school counts towards a student’s learning. Students who attend more, generally do better at school and in life.

When is it OK to not go to school?

An OK reason is one that prevents your child from getting to school. This could include:

•    when your child is sick or unwell

•    attending cultural or religious observances such as sorry time and funerals

•    an unavoidable natural event such as flood waters or a cyclone

•    an unavoidable medical appointment

It’s NOT OK to miss school if your child:

•    is celebrating a birthday

•    is going on a family holiday

•    is visiting family and friends

•    has slept in or had a big weekend

•    is looking after other children

•    has sport or other recreational activities that have not been approved by the  school

•    has appointments such as haircuts and minor check ups

Save These Dates:

Outstanding Contributions

This is a friendly reminder for outstanding school contributions to be paid.

These make a huge difference to the opportunities and outcomes for our students.  The voluntary contributions of parents like you over many years have enabled Scarborough Primary School to continue providing facilities and resources including: Musical Instruments, P.E Equipment, ICT resources, Mathematics, Science & Technology Equipment and Audio-visual Equipment.

Positions Available

The positions of Canteen Manager and Uniform Shop Manager will become vacant at the end of this term, and we are looking for a new crew to replace Jackie and Trish. The roles can either be done separately, or if anyone is keen, can be combined. The day(s) the canteen and uniform shop open are flexible, and the commitment per week is approximately 9 hours for the canteen and 1-2 hours for the uniform shop.

The Canteen Manager is a paid position, however there is a component of voluntary work expected. The Uniform Shop Manager operates on a purely voluntary basis. No previous experience or specific skills are required for either job.

If you are interested in either or both of these roles, or just want some more information or a copy of the job description, please email the P and C (scarboroughprimarypc@gmail.com) by Tuesday the 18th of June.

Thanks, and regards,

Felicity

The Common Cold

Colds

Upper respiratory tract infections or colds are everywhere, especially in winter, so it is almost impossible to stop children from catching them. Here are some points which may help:

·         Teach your child to cover his/her nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, and to wash hands straight afterwards.

·         Hands should be washed after blowing noses and before eating.

·         Use tissues once and then throw them in the bin. (Avoid using handkerchiefs.)

·         Keep your child home from school if he/she has a cold/cough/fever/pain.

·         Make sure that your children eat a balanced diet of plenty of healthy foods.

·         Keep children away from smoke – it irritates their eyes and nasal passages, making it more likely that they will catch a cold.

What to do if your child gets a cold

No treatment will cure a cold or make it go away more quickly, but you can help your child feel more comfortable:

·         Rest: This need not be in bed.

·         Provide extra drinks: If your child doesn’t want to drink much, try giving lots of small sips of water, milk or juice, or ice blocks to suck for older children.

Library News

Book Club issue 4 orders need to be placed by 14 June.

All orders need to be made via LOOP - the easiest way for you to order and pay online for your child's book club order.

Woolworths Earn and Learn

We are excited to be taking part in the 2019 Woolworths Earn & Learn program. During the previous campaign, we were able to purchase some great resources with the points we earned, thanks to you. Collect your stickers at Woolworths and for every $10 you spend (excluding the purchase of tobacco, liquor and gift cards), you will receive a sticker. Your children can then place them on the special sticker sheet. Once completed, bring it to school or you drop them into your local Woolworths collection box.

You can collect a sticker sheet in store or you can download them by clicking here.

The more points we earn, the more we can redeem from a choice of over 10,000 educational resources including mathematics and English resources, art & crafts materials and much, much more!

We are grateful for your support and look forward to a successful program.

Scarborough Snack Shack - VOLUNTEERS

Business is booming!  We are now preparing and delivering over 30 crunch and sips, 50 recess items and more than 80 lunches every Friday - and I could really use an extra pair of hands to help get the lunch run done.

If you're available between 11:45am and 1:15pm on a Friday, please register via QuickCliq under Volunteering, or contact Jackie on 0422 977 208.  You just need a hat, enclosed shoes and a smile, I'll provide the apron, plus your child can have a FREE Meal Deal for your efforts … without a helper, getting these hungry kids fed on time can be tricky!

Thanks

Jackie

Entertainment Books

Please ask your family, friends, neighbours or work colleagues if they would like to help with the fundraiser by purchasing your allocated book. After this, if you would like to return the book, please drop it back in the personalised envelope provided, clearly marked with your child’s name. If these could be returned as soon as possible so we can receive our cheque from the funds raised.

$14 from the sale of each book goes directly to the P&C to assist with fundraising. Thank you.

The uniform shop is open Wednesday mornings between 8:30am and 9:00am.
