Principal's Message

Dear Community

All of a sudden, we are at the end of Term 3!

We finished the term off this week with participation in our very first Spelling Bee, which was held at Yuluma PS on Tuesday morning. We are so proud of all the students who represented us. They all did an amazing job and we came away with a second place and 2 third places. Well done everyone!

Our Choir and Taiko drumming students have also represented us out in the community over the last month. Our Taiko Drummers took part in a video shoot for a Telethon promotion which will be seen on Channel 7 over the coming months and there will also be a 60 second segment on Channel 7 News this Sunday between 6 and 7pm about the promotion.

Our choir took part in the Massed Choir Festival last Saturday evening and as usual did an outstanding job, showing the benefits of all the hard work that they had put into rehearsals this year. Neve was even selected to do a solo, which was, of course fabulous!

Term 4

Please see below for some initial information about some upcoming Term 4 events to help with your planning.

  • Swimming lessons will run daily across Weeks 3 and 4. A note will go home in Week 1. Once again, our wonderful P&C are subsidising the cost of the bus, which means the cost is likely to be around the $30 mark, significantly reduced from around $60 per child.
  • Surfing: times for sessions are currently under negotiation but are likely to be on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning across the second half of the term. More information around how to book will be available at the start of next term.
  • Booklists: these are currently being finalised by Campion and are due for distribution early next term.
  • End of Year Concerts/ award presentations: Due to construction, we are currently looking at alternate formats to run these in. They are likely to be 2-3 smaller events, held in the library rather than 1 whole school event. Specific dates and times will be set next term, although they are likely to be in Week 8 or 9.
  • Year 6 Graduation will be held on Tuesday, December 13 at 9:00 am.
  • Reports will be emailed home on Tuesday 13 December.
  • Last day for students is Thursday 15 December.

Building for our Future: Update 3

Sod Turning Ceremony

On 7 September, the commencement of our new build was signified by a visit from our Premier, Mark McGowan and Stuart Aubrey MLA, local member for Scarborough, who conducted the official sod turning ceremony. They were joined by our School Captains, Neve and Violeta, along with Board Chair, Mr Bailey Love, and P&C representative Shannon McKenzie. The ceremony was followed by a tour of the school where Mr McGowan and Mr Aubrey chatted to several students and learned a thing or two about pirates during an impromptu visit to Room 4. We look forward to having them to open our new block once it’s complete! More photos coming soon on Instagram.

General information:

  • Over the last few weeks a temporary ramp has been installed in the under covered area to allow for disability access during the works.
  • Once this piece of work is completed the roller doors on the north facing end will no longer be able to be closed completely.
  • At this point, all the roller doors will be left open, making the area an unsecured space, but providing a high level of visibility to deter anti-social behaviour.
  • Security cameras are also being installed by the construction company as further protection for the site and under covered area

If you have any initial queries about this exciting project, please don’t hesitate to call or email me on Sarah.Dawson@education.wa.edu.au .

School Board

Our School Board met on Wednesday evening As usual it was a meeting with a diverse range of topics covered, including the following:

  • Proposed dates for Student Development Days were endorsed, along with the Personal Items lists for 2023.
  • Ongoing discussions about features for a new school website were also tabled. This piece of work will be concluded at the next meeting and we aim for the website to be live by the end of the year.
  • NAPLAN results were reviewed and the excellent progress and achievement made by Year 3 students across the school was noted. The effects of our recent investments into whole school programs over the past two years has started to bring results.

We have 1 more Parent Representative vacancies on the School Board that is currently vacant. The tenure runs from now until the end of 2023.  You will need to be a parent at Scarborough Primary School until the end of 2023 to be eligible.

The Board’s role is required to help the school deliver a quality education experience to our children by:

  • establishing and reviewing the goals, priorities and policies of the school at a strategic level;
  • supporting the development of our School Business Plan;
  • planning for and endorsing school budgets;
  • evaluating the performance of our school in achieving the goals set; and
  • promoting our school within the community.

So, if the description above peaks your interest we would love you to consider nominating. If you are interested in nominating for a Parent Representative position, please email to Sarah.Dawson@education.wa.edu.au or express your interest in person to the front office. Nominations close at 3:00 pm, Monday 10 October 2022.

New members of the Board will undertake training and will have a mentor allocated to assist with induction onto the Board.

We are particularly excited that this term has come to an end as next term will bring us the MUSICAL BINGO night! The MUSICAL BINGO night will be held Friday 21 October at the Scarborough Sports and Community Club and will start at 7pm.

CANTEEN

We are always looking for canteen volunteers. So, if you or anyone in your immediate family (aunts, uncles, grandparents etc) have any Friday mornings available, Laura would love some assistance in the SPS canteen.

Helping out in Canteen means that you come in and support Laura for 2 hours, usually between 10-12 pm or 11-1 pm; whatever works for you! Duties consist of washing dishes, prepping pizzas, handing out lunches, etc.

E-mail us at the P&C or speak to Laura on Fridays in the canteen if you are keen to help.

Please also note that all canteen orders need to be placed via QuickCliq prior to 8.30 am on Friday. Cash is not accepted.
