Term 2 – we are already halfway through

It is fantastic to see the incredible things happening at Narrabri West. These are a result of our school community working together for our students and it is this partnership between students, parents and staff that is achieving great things for them.

Our teachers are busily finalising assessment data and preparing written student reports to go home in Week 10 of this term. These provide students and parents with information on student achievement so far this year. They provide clear, comprehensive and consistent information about each child‘s progress, as well as suggestions on how parents can best support their child with their learning.

Students have been undertaking ongoing assessments throughout the year to allow teachers to make judgments about their progress.

Teachers have also spent many hours working in their stage teams to ensure that there is consistency across the school and that the reports provide an accurate indication of each child’s current learning and needs.

Some very busy weeks at Narrabri West

These last few weeks have been extremely hectic and it’s great to see the number of students making the most of the many opportunities offered at Narrabri West.

There is a downside to all of these extra activities however, as consequently there are a lot of interruptions. Whilst these may sometimes be a disruption to normal school life, they are all valuable learning activities and part of the overall educational experience. Many of them are also chances for students to excel at, or be involved in opportunities that they would not normally receive in the classroom.

Thank you to our teachers

We have many wonderful teachers at Narrabri West and are extremely lucky to have many of them volunteer to run programs including sporting teams, music, etc.

It is not compulsory for staff to volunteer for these roles and we are privileged that they give up their time due to their commitment, passion and care for our students.

They go above and beyond what is required so that they can provide the best opportunities for everyone at our school. They often give up personal time, work late into the night and arrive at school very early. They do this without expecting any recognition or acknowledgement, but just for the benefit of our students.

Their enthusiasm and contribution is to be commended. Thank you!

Working With Children Check

The Working With Children Check is an important part of the Department's recruitment process to prevent unsuitable people from working with children in schools.  The Department's commitment to ensuring the welfare of students is a paramount consideration when reviewing the suitability of employees.  All employees, including volunteers, in Departmental workplaces who are performing work that primarily involves direct contact with children are required to complete a Working With Children Check Declaration and provide proof of identity that meets the 100 point check.  This includes parents who help in the classroom, volunteer in the canteen and help at other activities, e.g. school sport, P&C, discos etc.  Forms are available from the school office.  If you volunteer in any capacity in our school you will need to complete one of these forms or provide a working with children check number.

Signing on

For safety and security reasons, all parents and volunteers who help in classrooms or other school activities are asked to sign the visitor’s book at the office when they arrive and sign out when leaving.

Teachers planning together

We are very fortunate to have experienced and professional teachers who have achieved some great things this year, ensuring a smooth start in classes that offer great learning environments for our students. It is always heartening to see first-hand the enthusiasm, effort and knowledge that goes into developing our school programs.

One of the structures we have implemented to support this collaboration is stage team planning days.

Twice a term, the teachers from each of our stages (ie Kindergarten, Years 1 and 2, Years 3 and 4, Years 5 and 6) are released from class to collaboratively plan and assess, to provide consistency of instruction across all classes and to best allow for innovation and professional improvement. Each team decides where their students are currently at, where they need to get to and the best pathway to lead them there.

As well as providing productive learning conditions for students, we also seek to provide productive learning conditions for teachers too. If our teachers aren’t continually learning ways to enhance effective teaching practice, then our school does not move forward. Our planning days are a valuable structure for us to have in place. To inspire lifelong learning and a love of learning, teachers must also be learners. It is always impressive to see the intense focus on student learning and the professional manner in which these sessions are conducted.

We understand that at times parents become concerned when teachers are not ‘on class’ but you can be assured that the time teachers invest in teacher professional learning is all about making a difference for your children. The way we have our school set up means there is minimal disruption to normal class programs and routines.

It is certainly a rich learning environment for everyone at Narrabri West.

Thank you to the Grip Leadership team. (Report written by our captains and prefects)

Class News – Early Stage 3

English

This term during English sessions, Stage 3 have been engaging in a range of activities focused on the book and movie 'Wonder'. The texts tell the story of August Pullman, a boy with facial deformities, who is starting his first year at school in 5th grade. Students have been analysing the two texts, as they are developing the skills to write a persuasive and informative comparison of the ‘Wonder’ duo. The students have learned about narrative voice, character development, theme and film techniques. They are currently learning how to form arguments to debate about the book is better than the movie.

Stage 3 students will use the ideas from the debate to plan their writing and receive feedback from both peers and teachers before publishing their work. Students are extremely excited to convince others of their viewpoint and justify their reasons based on what they have learned throughout the term.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, Year 5 have been developing their strategies to solve subtraction and division problems. They used hands-on learning to measure and calculate the perimeter and area of 2D shapes. Students have been collecting and interpreting data and representing it using dot plots, bar graphs and pie charts.

Term 2 Mathematics for Year 6 has been interesting and engaging. Student from 6A and 6T have focused on interesting topics from collecting and interpreting data to exploring 2D shapes and 3D objects.

Stage 3 teachers have programmed group rotations to challenge all of our students. We have utilised programs such as Essential Assessment and QR Code game-based activities, as well as working in small groups with the teacher. There groups are designed to reteach, revise and extend students’ understanding of different mathematical concepts.

Digital Technologies

This term Stage 3 have been busy with the complexities of robotics! From Week 5, each Stage 3 class have had the opportunity to work with a piece of technology called the Micro:bit (pictured). A Micro:bit is a small rectangle with 24 LED lights that doesn’t look like much, however it is the brains behind many exciting functions and coding activities. The Micro:bits come with an expansion pack called the ‘Grove Invertors Pack’ that come with multiple plug-ins and modules in order for the Micro:bit to demonstrate its exciting capabilities. Stage 3 student have experimented with the Micro:bit to create music, light displays, games and have even connected them up to bananas to act as musical instruments!

PD/Health

In PD/Health this term students in Stage 3 have been learning about ways to stay mentally, socially and physically healthy. They have also identified people and places to seek help and strategies to overcome peer pressure.

PE

Stage 3 students have been busy preparing for next term’s Athletics Carnival! We have been practising track and field events during the week and recording students’ best attempts at each event during Sport on Fridays. Stage 3 have loved honing their skills at sprinting, discus, shotput, long jump and high jump (under the guidance of visiting coach Jake Packer). For the remainder of the term we will be exploring games from around the world, including European Handball, Dodgeball, AFL 9s and Koh Koh.

Science

Our Science unit this term is all about states of matter – solids, liquids and gases. Students will learn about how particles move in each of the three states and the impact of heat. We have an incursion with AusEarthEd on Tuesday 8th June where students will investigate the viscosity of lava. So far, students have enjoyed exploring different materials, especially the behaviour of the ‘mystery material’ that acts as both a solid and a liquid.

History

This term in History Stage 3 are exploring early colonisation in Australia. The students are asking ‘I wonder’ questions and researching how and why various areas of Australia were settled. We are discussing a range of methods that we can use to investigate the past and how historians gather information. Students will learn about interactions between European settlers and Indigenous Australians and describe what life in the colonies was like.

Creative Arts

In Creative Arts, Stage 3 students are enjoying drama. In the first few weeks, students practised their miming skills and later created sound effects while performing a short skit. They are working on their improvisation skills over the next few weeks before they begin writing their own script and performing a play in front of an audience.

Playing a full game of softball was a new experience for most of our boys and girls and they learned lots about the game on the day with the support of Mrs Booby’s expertise. The girls softball team was successful and defeated Warialda 21-7. With an extremely close first innings our boys team came back to win 24-7. A big thanks to Mrs Ward and Christy Browning for umpiring the games.

PSSA Rugby League Knockout

Friday the 14th of May the opens Rugby League team went to Cooma Oval, Narrabri to play their first round in the PSSA Rugby League Knockout against Wee Waa Public School.

Unfortunately Narrabri West were unsuccessful with a score board of 18-14. After our match, Narrabri West played Gunnedah Public School in a friendly match as they were playing the winners of round 1 later that day.

All students at Narrabri West played extremely well and showed some great sportsmanship on and off the field.

PSSA Girls Soccer Knockout

Narrabri West Public School vs Wee Waa Public School Gately Field, Thursday May 20. Both teams started in a very compressed manner and struggled to progress down the field. Our girls found it very hard to find any space until a long ball down the sideline saw Kiara Vlahopoulos running onto it to score her first goal. She made another great run a few minutes later after a cross from Sophie Michell to score her second goal. Late in the first half after a successful progression down the sideline from Stella Laws made it possible for Sophie Michell to score. Wee Waa scored just after half time due to free players in dangerous positions in front of goal. The second half was much more physical with plenty of great tackles and clearing kicks. Ava O’Connell was able to score in the middle of the second half. The end score was 4 -1. The defensive line worked particularly hard and the whole team improved throughout the game. Congratulations in particular to many of our players who haven’t played before in a Westy team. All the girls played with great sportsmanship and encouraged each other on and off the field. We now have made it to the final 16 of the North West competition and will play Moree in the next couple of weeks.

PSSA Boys Soccer Knockout

Round 2:  Thursday May 6 Narrabri West Public School boy's soccer team came home with a win against Narrabri Public School. The game had it all, extra time, penalty shoot outs and most of all good sportsmanship. Well done boys.

Round 3: Thursday May 20 the boy's soccer team travelled Wee Waa to play in the third round of the PSSA knock-out competition. The boys played amazingly and came away winning 8 nil. They all displayed outstanding sportsmanship and should be very proud of their efforts.

Gunnedah United Miners Rugby League Cup

Thursday the 20th of May the Stage 2 and 3 rugby league teams went to Gunnedah to play in the United Coal Miners Rugby League Gala Day.

Mr Druce coached the Stage 2 team in which the students played 4 matches against surrounding schools. They played extremely well and demonstrated some great upcoming talent.

Mr Tester coached the opens team who were undefeated on the day, winning the United Coal Miners Shield, making that Narrabri West 3rd consecutive winners.

All students who attended represented the school respectfully and played with outstanding sportsmanship (Cruz Ryan even winning a special mention during the gala day presentation). Congratulations to all those who attended on the day.

P&C Meetings

Please join us for the next P&C meeting. Monday 1st of July at 6:30pm in the staff room.

All parents welcome.

Uniforms

As we move towards the cooler weather, I ask students and parents to be aware of the uniform requirements at Narrabri West. Our uniform room has school jumpers, jackets and rugby tops available in school colours with our emblem on them, as well as track pants. Royal blue or red scarves are also permitted. Please assist us to uphold the wonderful uniform standard that we have set.

We have school jackets which can be purchased from the school office for $50.

We also notice at this time every year students wearing jumpers to school that are not part of the school uniform. Jumpers that are different colours to our school jumper SHOULD NOT be worn.

Attendance

Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.

Arriving at school and class on time:

•    Ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day;

•    Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine;

•    Give students time to greet their friends before class; and

•    Reduces classroom disruption.

Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents. So let’s get our children at school on time to start the school day.

Sickness at school

Over the past weeks there have been a lot of upset tummies, coughs and colds going around. As the weather changes, we also often have a number of illnesses ‘doing the rounds’ with students. We realise that it is often difficult to decide whether or not to send your children to school. However, if they are obviously unwell in the morning it would be wise to keep them at home. If you send them to school sick, it will take longer for them to get over it, it could become worse and in the process they may pass it on to someone else as well. Please give this some close consideration.

Pre School Enrolments 2022

Parents are advised that ‘Enrolment Expression of Interest’ forms are now available at the front office or on the Pre School section of our website for placement at our Pre School in 2022.

Please also advise any friends, relatives etc. who would like their children to attend next year of the availability of these forms.

We already have a lot of applications for the limited places available.

NARRABRI WEST PUBLIC SCHOOL - KINDERGARTEN 2022

Please complete this form for each child in your family who will be attending School in 2022 at Narrabri West Public School.

ASTHMA ACTION PLANS

With some cold weather already here, and winter fast approaching, lots of children will experience asthma related illnesses.

If your child has been diagnosed with asthma, your doctor or health care provider should have provided you with an Asthma Action Plan to help you and your child with their asthma.

It is recommended that you provide your childs’ school with a copy of their Asthma Action Plan and their own Ventolin puffer (and spacer if needed) so we too can help your child with their asthma if they happen to have asthma whilst at school.  The school does have Ventolin for emergency use only.

If you have already provided us with an action plan, please ensure that it is current and up to date.

These plans must be signed by your doctor or health care provider.

Our school has been recognised as an Asthma Friendly School by meeting the set criteria to become an Asthma Friendly School.

The criteria are as follows:

•              Asthma records kept for each student with asthma

•              Asthma first aid posters are on display

•              Asthma medications are readily available to students with asthma

•              Spacer devices are available

•              A plan is in place for managing asthma during sporting activities, excursions or camps

•              Asthma education offered to parents/caregivers within the school

•              Asthma education provided for all school staff

•              Asthma education program in the health curriculum

•              Potential asthma triggers minimised with in the school environment

9 digital technology guidelines for parents

Technology is everywhere now, in our homes, in our pockets, and perhaps worryingly for many parents, in our children’s hands.

Every family is different, and will have their own ideas around what’s considered ‘normal’ or acceptable use of our beloved devices, which means there’s no universal answer.

However, there are some suggestions that can help you build some rules of your own and bring some order to the way your children use digital devices at home.

1. Know what the rules and expectations are at school

2. Specify hours for digital use

3. Consider a digital device ‘contract’

4. Lay out consequences from the start

5. Talk about respectful relationships, safety and pornography

6. Be prepared to learn

7. Change the rules if necessary

8. Keep digital devices out of the bedroom

9. Have a ‘digital detox’ one day a week
