News from the Principal

Dear Families,

Pupil Free Day

A reminder that next Friday is a Pupil Free Day. Staff will be involved in various professional development opportunities, including moderation of writing samples and a focus on phonological awareness in relation to successful readers.

Please note that our OSHC service will be open and bookings must be made by next Tuesday afternoon.

NAPLaN (Online)

In Weeks 3 & 4 of next term (14th to 28th May), the NAPLaN Online Tests will take place for students in Years 3, 5, 7 & 9.

The tests will cover Literacy (Language Conventions, Writing and Reading) & Numeracy.

The results gained from the tests provide us with data that we analyse and then use to program appropriately for our students. Our students will be undertaking the testing online.

In certain circumstances, students can be withdrawn or exempted from the tests with parent permission.

Reasons may include: Philosophical or personal reasons; Students with a language other than English who have been in the country for less than 12 months; Students with significant intellectual disability.

If you would like to discuss a possible exemption or withdrawal for your child, or anything else in relation to the tests, please feel free to contact either myself or Bob Bowden before the end of this term (12th April).

In the meantime, further information can be accessed at https://www.nap.edu.au/

School and Classroom News

Sea Shepherd - Yr 6/7 Media team

On Wednesday 20th February, Georgia from Sea Shepherd came to talk to the year 6’s and 7’s about what their company does. Georgia talked about how humans have a huge impact on our marine life such as whales, seals, sharks, turtles, etc and how they are becoming endangered because of all of the fishermen who don’t care about marine life. We need sharks in our oceans because sharks help keep our environment clean, because they eat all the diseased fish in the ocean and if all the sharks where killed we would all die. So stop killing sharks just for money because you would be killing us as well.

Poseidon Art

This term in history we have been learning about ancient Greece. One of the topics is Greek mythology. Meanwhile in art, we’ve been learning different shading techniques, particularly hatching and cross hatching. Then we were set a task to shade in Poseidon’s head using the two techniques and created this. Here are some of our examples.

Health

A busy start to the year!

We had a wonderful visit from Bob in the Life Education van in week two for the year 1-5’s. We learnt about growing good friends, minding our medicine and relating, respecting and connecting online safely.

In class we have begun to look our emotions, the right to be safe and risks.

We have established some golden rules when we are working in Health lessons and aim to show our school values as level fours!

Be kind and keep safe!

Mrs Foley

Room 4

In Room 4, we have been growing our resilience, confidence and getting along skills as new learners at Largs Bay School. We are building our understanding of sound and letter relationships through our Daily 5 rotations.

In Maths, we have been sorting objects and making patterns with them. We can draw our patterns too.

We have been learning about our school values in HASS. We have been thinking about what we want to be and how we want to feel in the future. We are feeling very excited about everything we have to learn to reach our goals.

Room 29

Lots of exciting things have been happening in Room 29. Over the past 4 weeks, we have been learning new routines, CAFÉ strategies, Daily 5, as well as getting to know one another.

Students have been learning about where they’re located in world. They’re becoming familiar with Australia’s States, Territories and Capital cities. We’re also learning about living and non-living things. Students are also growing wheat and writing their observations in their science investigation booklets.

They’ve been busy painting and creating shadow images of living things and even had the pleasure of hanging out with our buddy class, room 19.  We’ve all had an enjoyable start to 2019.

Room 10 - Patterns in Maths

In Room 10, we have been learning about growing and repeating patterns. We know patterns follow a set of rules and combinations may include AB, ABB, AAB, etc. We have found patterns both outdoors and in picture books. We then created our own pattern fish book.

Geography and Art in Room 19

In Geography, we have been learning about Australia. First, we began by talking about major landmarks in Australia and categorised them as ‘man-made’ or ‘natural’.

We then completed a mapping task using a blank map of Australia – we used an atlas to label all the states/territories and capital cities of Australia.

In Visual Art so far, we have completed a painting on the Australian native Bottle-Brush plant and a painting of Uluru (Ayers Rock).

Room 5a

In Room 5a, we have had a busy start to school!  We have been learning about living things, making patterns, counting, being friends, being brave and struggling!

In our Week of Inspirational Maths, we have learnt that new learning is hard work!  We have tried hard and have our brains firing!

We have learnt a lot of sounds and are hard at it blending them together to learn how to read.

We have practised our three values of respect, responsibility and persistence.

Mural

Last year, one of the year 6/7 elective groups worked on a mosaic mural. The design was done by Emily S and the group of 20 students had fun smashing tiles and gluing them onto the backing board. It is now finished and located on the end of the hall wall near Centre Street. We think it looks great.

Theatre Bugs

Theatre Bugs has been in operation for over 20 years teaching South Australian children performing arts skills through programmes developed and taught by trained educators.

At Theatre Bugs, children not only learn skills in dancing, singing and acting.  They also learn to trust their own ideas, develop perseverance, empathise with others, work with peers to achieve common goals and feel confident in their own ability.  Most of all, they develop the confidence they need to be able to tackle the unexpected, challenging and exciting situations that they are confronted with in life.

As a special offer for new Theatre Bug students if they mention they saw this in your newsletter and/or on Skool Bag and enrol in one of our classes they will receive 20% of their term 1 fees.
