Lismore South Public School Newsletter

Term 3 Week 5&6

Principal Message

Every day counts!

Thank you parents and carers for your ongoing commitment to education. Attendance is fundamental to a child’s learning, social and emotional development. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier, and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.

Just a reminder that attendance at school is mandated by law and children must attend every day the school is operational unless they have a legitimate reason for being absent. Parents must provide an explanation for absences to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. Where an explanation has not been received within the 7 day timeframe, the school will record the absence as unjustified on the student's record.

What if my child must be away from school?

The main reason being illness or misadventure. Planned holidays should be avoided during the school term and parents will need to apply for exemptions if this occurs.

Justified reasons for student absences may include:

· being sick or having an infectious disease

· having an unavoidable medical appointment

· being required to attend a recognised religious holiday

· exceptional or urgent family circumstances e.g. attending a funeral.

SMS messages are sent out everyday, mid morning, to parents if their child/children are absent on the day. All you need to do is explain the absence with a reason in your reply and it will be pushed through to their attendance record for this absence notification only. Please only use this number to reply to our SMS not to initiate a message to us.

Remember – even 1 day absent per week during a school term = 2 weeks of lost learning.

Have a wonderful week!

Regards,

Larissa Polak

2022 Byron Writer's Festival School's Day

Students from Stage 2 and 3 travelled to Southern Cross University on Wednesday, 24th September to immerse themselves in the Byron Writer's Festival. A big thank you to festival organisers for sponsoring our students to attend.  It was such a wonderful day for our students to learn from published authors. Isobelle Carmody and Corey Tutt entertained the large primary school audience with their wisdom of how simple ideas can turn into a story.

Book Week

It was wonderful to see the many characters we have grown to love stepping out of their books and into our school yard.  The Book Character dress-up day is always well-received. This year it was such a great day enjoyed by so many of our students and staff. In case you hadn’t noticed, our staff tend to enjoy the odd dress-up day and were right into the spirit of the day!

Seeking a Replacement for Story Dog Maggie

Hi, I’m Maggie the Story Dog and Anne and I will be retiring at the end of this year after 6 years at Lismore South Public School.  I will be 12 years old in October and that means I will be 84 years old in ‘human’ years (phew, I need a nap just thinking about it)!  Most humans retire much earlier but not me as I have a really important job helping children to read.  Anne is hoping to recruit and train the next “Story Dog Team” so if anyone you know who has 2 hours per week to spare and a friendly pooch like me then contact Anne via email on anne@storydogs.org.au.  You can also check out the Story Dogs website on www.storydogs.org.au

COVID Cases - please notify us

Positive tests must be reported to the school and via the Services NSW App. Positive cases are required to isolate for 7 days. If you or your children are unwell, they should stay at home. Adults entering our school site are asked to wear a mask whilst indoors. Your assistance with this is appreciated as we continue to try and keep students, staff and the community well during the winter months. If you have any questions or concerns or require clarification, please contact the school.

Bus Service Reminder

Parents and carers are reminded that the Bulzomi bus leaves Kyogle Street at 8.45am.  School staff arrive at 8.30am to support supervision at the bus stop. Alternatively, the Platypus bus from Northern Rivers Buslines is available as an alternative to get your child to and from school each day.  The Platypus bus departs Phyllis Street at 8.20am each day and will drop students at Goonellabah PS.  This bus returns to Lismore South PS bus stop after 3.30pm each day.

Ngulliboo Jarjums Preschool

This Week at Preschool

Preschool was filled with excitement this week as we celebrated Book Week. Children used their imagination as they transformed into their characters and explored different identities through role play.

We have also visited the kindergarten room and enjoyed engaging in play-based activities. It was lovely to immerse in a continuity of learning, and see children connecting with old friends and begin building new friendships.

Children have been busy making mud pies, fishing, exploring rainbows, making 'snake nests', and role-playing animal hospitals. Children have also taken an interest in music, and have been enjoying exploring a variety of dance.

Change of Clothes

A friendly reminder to please pack a hat and set of spare clothes each day for those 'just in case' moments. At preschool we love to engage in play based exploration and experimentation with paint, water, sand and mud!

Flu Season

If your child is unwell, please do not send them to school. That includes if your child had vomiting or diarrhoea the night before, they must not attend for at least 24 hours after symptoms have eased. If they are coughing or have any flu-like symptoms they must not attend. If children come to school and are obviously unwell, you will be contacted to pick them up.
