Principal's Message

Dear parents and carers,

We have come to the end of another successful term of school at PPS. Since the last Punchbowl Press, we have celebrated Book Week, participated in an intensive MCA excursion with a targeted group of students and so much more. This term we celebrated SaSS week which highlights the incredible work done by our SLSOs and Admin team. They are crucial to the day to day operations and wellbeing of all our students. We appreciate their support and skill.

The Centenary of our school is fast approaching with our celebration set for Saturday 22 October from 11-2. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the day. All the students have been working on their artwork for our Art Show which will be in the hall. The Centenary committee have been searching through the school archive as well as Bankstown and State Library archives to curate the School Museum. We have uncovered some wonderful artefacts including photos, registers and student work going back many years. We will have a historic classroom set up in the SaCC so that we can experience what a classroom was like back in 1923 when the infants school was established on our site. Our choir and dance groups will be performing and there will be food trucks onsite. I look forward to celebrating this very important milestone with the community.

On Tuesday 23 August, we held the inaugural Bunmarra Corroborree. We had Aboriginal students and teachers visiting from Banksia Road PS, Yagoona PS, Chullora PS, Greenacre PS, Berala PS, Birrong PS and Hampden Park PS. It was an enormous success with our students making connections across schools. Thank you to the AECG Bankstown, Christine Franklin, Aunty Carol, Andrew Fielding and the ATSI team here at PPS for making the day so special.

Have a wonderful holiday. Stay safe. We will see everyone back on Monday 10 October.

Preschool & Early Intervention

The Importance of Reading

It is undeniable that reading is important for a child’s development. It builds so many skills – helping children learn, develop a relationship with the world, understand feelings and emotions and explore narratives and history.

Supporting a child to read, and getting involved with their reading, is one of the most rewarding things teachers and parents can do.  So, let’s dive a little deeper and properly explore why reading is important for children.

1. Builds concentration

2. Improves memory

3. Teaches about the world

4. Develops empathy

5. Expands vocabulary

6. Boosts critical thinking

7. Helps build positive self-image

8. Better performance in school

In term 3 we celebrated Book Week to encourage children to love and read books with enthusiasm and excitement. Children and teachers dressed and celebrated their favourite book characters in the Preschool and Early Intervention. Thank you for all the parent support that contributed to the success of the day.

Calmsley Hill City Farm Excursion

Next term, Kindergarten students will ride the bus to Calmsley Hill City farm. They will interact with a range of native and farmyard animals. Students will learn how to milk a cow, go on a tractor ride around the paddock and see a sheep getting sheered. They will also have a go at cracking a whip and watch an entertaining dog show.

Early Stage 1

That’s a wrap on term 3! It has been a busy term and we have achieved so much. Thank you to all our students for their hard work, resilience and for always making us smile. We have been exploring patterns and sorting objects. Students have been learning about the different attributes and language associated with patterns and sorting. Here are some pictures of some of the different ways students have implemented their new skills.

Stage 1

Students in Stage 1 have been learning about the history of Punchbowl Public School in preparation for our centenary celebrations in Term 4. Each student has been busy creating a special art piece that will be on display as part of the centenary art gallery. Students were asked to choose their favourite building in the school and sketch it. We can’t wait to share the final products at the Punchbowl Public School Art Gallery on the 22nd October.

Stage 2

Stage 2 have had a very busy start to Term 3, with a definite highlight being our science program which allows students to explore different forces with hands-on scientific investigations. Students have had a great time learning about contact forces, gravity, magnetism, and friction. Check out some of the photos from our investigations!

This term we have also celebrated NAIDOC week. We have continued to develop a greater understanding and appreciation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. This year, we did this through both a celebration of traditional Indigenous games and an incursion that celebrated culture through dance.

K/6 Owls & K/6 Kookaburras

What an eventful term this has been for all our students. We were invited to attend Western Sydney University where students had the opportunity to participate and learn about tourism, policing and technology. Ali, Samuel and Zayd thoroughly enjoyed all learning experiences within these workshops. Students in Kookaburras have been experiencing new flavours and textures of different and unusual fruits every morning. This experience has familiarised them with the name, taste and appearance of all sorts of fruits. We had the chance to make beef burgers and sushi with produce picked out of the school garden. Teachers, SLSOs and students dress up to impress at our annual Book Week parade. Last week we celebrated the hard work our SAS staff do on a daily basis for our students. Mrs Park and I want to acknowledge our School Learning and Support Officers, Maria Diamataris and Lili Loukas for all their hard work and dedication this year.

Stage 3

University Students for a Day!

Stage 3 students participated in the First Foot Forward program at the Western Sydney University. This wonderful initiative is offered to partner schools and is run by Western Sydney University students and staff. The event aims to provide Stage 3 students a greater understanding of higher education and inspire them to consider university as a post school option. Students participated in three different fun, educational, and interactive workshops: Coding & Robotics, Policing & Criminology and Tourism. The workshops were delivered in lecture and tutorial rooms, giving students a glimpse of university life. All students received some gifts and a participation certificate!

SRC Fundraiser - Sausage Sizzle

Thank you to everyone who ordered a meal and helped to make the SRC Sausage Sizzle fundraising event a huge success earlier this week. We especially thank Ms El-Esh and the SRC along with the office staff, Mr Weeks, Mr Selver and our amazing parent volunteers Salma Morheb, Melissa Peterson, Farzana Yeasmin, Seham Ammouri and Sarah Lanesbury for all their efforts. We acknowledge and thank Marjan butchery Punchbowl and Woolworths Bankstown for their generous donations.

We raised a whopping $1830 which will go towards Yr6 events

Community Language - Arabic

Students in Stage 2 have been learning about the days of the week, colours and food names in Arabic. They have been learning this through the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. Students enjoyed working collaboratively to present what they have learnt through making a caterpillar, writing the days of the week on each circle and the food that the caterpillar ate in the target language. They have also learnt sequencing skills through learning about the days of the week.

Share our Space - Weekends and Public Holidays only

The outdoor facilities at our school will be available to use from 8 am to 5 pm on weekends and public holidays only as part of Share Our Space.

Please remember to use the bins provided, note that toilets/bubblers will not be accessible during this time and children must be supervised by an adult at all times.

Have fun and enjoy the great outdoors these school holidays.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) brings together the whole-school community to contribute to developing a positive, safe and supportive learning culture.

Our school values support us and underpin all that we do. This term in our PBL lessons, we learnt and revisited lessons that helped us continue working on how to be safe, respectful, and learners.

We have been working on understanding the importance of respect toward each other and speaking respectfully and kindly. We revisited playground expectations and how we use and move around the canteen. “Walk the Blue” is a favourite and catchy slogan that reminds us how to be safe in certain areas and walk as we move from place to place.

“I think probably kindness is my number one attribute in a human being. I’ll put it before any of the things like courage or bravery or generosity or anything else."
