Wombat Whisper

22nd March, 2021

Hello from Mrs Osavkovska (Mrs O),

What a busy time it has been here at Kinglake West over the past few weeks. We are now nearing towards the end of term, but with lots of things and hard work still happening, the work continues

Over the past week, we have had a number of special events happen.

Pancake Day was a fun day where we had students receive their pancake orders. It was definitely interesting watching our fantastic group of parents and Tracey, making up pancakes with a multitude of different toppings. I was certainly intrigued at the student’ choices.

Harmony Week is a celebration of Australia’s cultural diversity and this week Harmony Day has provided lots of colour and orange. Thank you to all the students who made an effort to come dressed up in orange and mark the day. The theme of ‘Everyone Belongs’, highlights the importance of a multicultural society.

Ride to School 2021

Ride2School day was a fantastic event. It was great to see families and students taking this day to heart and making a special effort in the morning to ride to school with their bikes and/or other wheels! I must commend all the students in following the safety rules and making sure they had helmets and crossed appropriately at the school crossing.

Ride 2 Skool was a fantastic success in 2021! Mrs Manzoney counted approximately 55 bikes and 11 scooters in total! Thanks to everyone who joined in, students, siblings, staff and parents alike. What a brilliant KWPS community we have! Miss Schulz.

Buddies

Last week the Preps worked with their Grade 6 Buddies, creating some very special chalk drawing illusions. The Buddies meet at 12.30 every Monday. It is a great opportunity for the Preps to form a lovely bond with a their buddy and the older students learn a lot about care, respect, teamwork and patience!

Tips to help improve your child’s attendance

Coming to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education. Students learn new things at school every day. Attending and participating in school will help your child develop:

    • important skills and knowledge to help them learn
    • social and emotional skills such as good communication, resilience and team work.
    • Talk to your child about school and how important it is. You can ask them how they feel about school, what they liked and if there are any problems.
    • Reward good behaviour and not bad behaviour. For example, if your child refuses to go to school, do not let them have access to their phones or the internet
    • Set a good example. Show them how you keep to your own commitments.
    • Encourage your child to take on hobbies that your child enjoys such as sports and clubs. This will help them develop positive relationships outside of the classroom
    • Have a set time to do homework and go to bed.
    • Leave all technology out of their bedroom
    • Pack their school bag the night before with everything they need
    • Have a set time for breakfast
    • Plan to meet up with a friend so they can travel to school together.

Easter Bonnet Parade – Thursday 1st April (Straight after Assembly)

    • Easter Bonnet Hats will be created at school with teachers organising this
    • Easter Bonnet Hats will be taken home after the parade by the students
    • Good weather – Parade will happen on the basketball court
    • Bad weather- Parade will happen in the Multipurpose Hall according to COVID -19 DET guidelines for social distancing with adults in indoor spaces (1 person per 2 square meters)

If you have any questions or concerns, please see myself or your child’s classroom teacher for further clarification on the Parade.

    Working Bee

Over the weekend, we had a lot of dedicated parents who came to the school to help out on Saturday with the call out for support in transferring and raking the mulch needed for the playground soft-fall. We had parents not only working but also providing refreshments to all the volunteers needed.

The Kinglake West staff and students would like to extend a HUGE THANK YOU to all these volunteers for supporting the school in getting this done. A big shout out to Darren B who kindly used his own machinery to move and transport the mulch and was instrumental in the organisation. Well done

Thursday 1st April will be the last day of Term 1 for this year. We will be having an early finish at 2.30pm. Please make sure to make all the appropriate arrangements to pick up your children at this time or enrol them in the After School program as needed.

Friday 2nd April – Good Friday Public Holiday

I wish you all another great week.

    Stay positive

    School Cross Country

    Dear Parents,

Our school Cross Country event will be taking place on Wednesday, 21st of April from 9.00am-10.45am. Parents are encouraged to come and watch their child participate if they wish to. Please ensure that your child comes prepared with appropriate running shoes and a drink bottle as all students will be required to participate.

Prep students will run first accompanied by their Grade 6 buddies. Grades 1-2 will run together, and students from grades 3-6 will run in groups based on their age. Students who come 1st, 2nd or 3rd and are aged 9 years and older will be eligible to progress to the District Cross Country which will take place on May 19th.

Students are encouraged to wear their house colours.

    Grade 3/4 Camp

The Grade 3 and 4 camp for this year will be to Arrabri Lodge which is in Warburton.  The camp is booked for Monday August 16th to Wednesday August 18th.

Cost: the cost of the camp is $340.00.  This is calculated on at least 40 children attending.  If fewer attend the cost may increase slightly.

We are aware that the cost for a camp may seem to be off-putting however; the benefits to all children of a camp are truly worth the experience.

Arrabri Lodge Camp offers the children experiences in:

    • Hiking
    • Bush skills and cooking
    • Gold panning
    • Orienteering
    • Initiative activities
    • Environmental science
    • Campfire singing
    • Ropes Course

The children will also be going to Healesville Sanctuary on the Wednesday.

In order to finalise the numbers for the camp we need Permission Form to be completed on skoolbag and the deposit of $50 by Friday 30th April.

Grade 5/6 "Talk about IT" program

Dear Parents/Guardians, As part of our school’s educational program, we are having Life Education deliver modules on Sexual Health through the ‘Talk About It’ program. Life Education will visit our school on the following date/s: 26th April, 3rd May, 10th May and 17th May

Developed with the support of Queensland Health and adopted by Life Education Victoria, this ground- breaking program is:

    • aligned to the Australian Curriculum age appropriate
    • flexible to meet student needs tailored to the schools’ ethos
    • delivered in your child’s classroom, not in the Mobile Learning Centre a model of evidence-based best practice.

“At Life Education, we understand the need for sexuality education to be delivered appropriately. We also understand that schools may need support with some topics more than others. Our program will offer a diverse range of content from which schools can choose. Delivered separately to the existing Life Education health modules, this program will be facilitated by specialist sexual health educators, working in partnership with classroom teachers. The activities are designed to explore contextual factors influencing sexual and social health and provide an appropriate learning environment to ‘Talk About It’!“

The Life Education ‘Talk About It’ program is aimed at Year 5/6 students and focuses on puberty which helps them to understand what to expect physically, socially and emotionally.

In order to finalise the numbers we need Permission Form to be completed on skoolbag and payment made Thursday 1st April.

Cost is $36 for the Grade 5 students and $40 for the Grade 6 students.

    Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund

CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND (CSEF)

School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors. Excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works while sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership.  All are a part of a healthy curriculum.

CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities.

If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.

The annual CSEF amount per student is:

    •     $125 for primary school students

    •     $225 for secondary school students

    HOW TO APPLY

New applicants should contact the school office to   obtain a CSEF application form or download from the website below.

If you applied for CSEF at your child's school last year, you do not need to complete an application form this year unless there has been a change in your family circumstances.

You only need to complete an application form if any of the following changes have occurred:

    ·         new student enrolments; your child has started or changed schools this year.

    ·         changed family circumstances; such as a change of custody, change of name, concession card number, or new siblings commencing this year.

Check with the school office if you are unsure.

    Fundraising News

Sticky beaks reusable lunch order bags fundraiser

In line with the Victoria Governments Better Bag Campaign, which encourages a shift towards a more sustainable future, Kinglake West Primary encourages all students to use reusable bags for their lunch orders.

In some exciting good news, we are selling the Stickybeak reusable lunch order bags, available to order through the QKR app.

The bags are reusable each week, easily wipe down with a damp cloth and help to insulate the food, keeping it warm or cold. They hold more food than paper bags and help us to reduce paper waste.

    2 options available.

    The Lunch wallet $10.50

    The all rounder $12.50

Both available to view at the school office.
