MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Caregivers

I would like to thank you for the many words of encouragement and support that School continues to receive from our parents in these difficult times. Please know that the safety and well-being of our students, staff and wider school community remains a focus.

While social distancing and many hygiene measures have been introduced across the School and staff regularly remind our students of these, we are trying to keep things as normal as possible in an attempt to reduce some of the anxiety that is sweeping our country at present. READ MORE

NAPLAN

Education Ministers met this morning to discuss the evolving COVID-19 situation and the implications for schools.

As a result they have today decided that NAPLAN testing will not proceed for 2020, therefore the pre-testing that was scheduled for Monday 23 March has been cancelled.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - CURRICULUM

Dear Parents

In these uncertain times, we have had to cancel some events that would have taken place this term. In each case, we are looking at alternatives.

Interim reports for students in Years 11 and 12 will be available to parents and students in SEQTA from 4.00pm on Monday 23 March.

Parent/ Teacher interviews have been cancelled and information regarding alternative arrangements has been emailed to parents.

An information session for those parents with students in Year 10 has also been cancelled. This session is aimed at providing parents with information about the selection of subjects for Year 11. I hope that we will be able to reschedule this session in Term 2.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR DEPUTY HEAD OF PRIMARY - MEADOW SPRINGS

Over 100 weary Year 5 students returned from Swan Valley Adventure Centre last Friday afternoon looking forward to seeing family and returning to their own beds. This had followed three days of a variety of activities where the students had overcome their fears to conquer new challenges. These activities included climbing on high ropes, abseiling down a challenging wall, riding down a long zip line, canoeing on the Swan River and needing to cooperate with peers to work their way out of a ‘black out zone’.

The activities tested the children’s patience and resilience and all students should feel proud of the way they persevered through activities and maintained a positive mindset.

The activities were weaved through a full programme and the break times were especially enjoyed by students, particularly the delicious food that was on offer. All students represented Frederick Irwin well and it was a great way for our students to meet new friends and get to know each other in a more informal setting.

School Events - March and April 2020

School Events and Activities

YEAR 6 CANBERRA TRIP

In Week 4, ninety Year 6 students undertook an education tour of the national capital.

Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education.

To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $310 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The tour was a wonderful experience filled with many and varied activities: old and new Parliament House, Government House, Royal Australian Mint, Australian Institute of Sport, the Australian War Memorial, Geoscience, Questacon, National Museum, Australian Electoral Commission as well as many others.

The students finished the trip with a visit down to Sydney where they met Ms Robertson before boarding a ferry ride out to Manly. The students represented the school exceptionally well and received many positive comments from the public about their behaviour.

It was a privilege for all staff to accompany this group of students.

YERA 6 ALTERNATIVE TO CANBERRA TRIP

During Week 6, Year 6 students from both campuses who did not attend the Canberra Tour joined together for some wonderful learning experiences. They had the opportunity to visit the State Parliament House, The Education Centre and Kings Park War Memorial. At Parliament House they enacted passing a bill, with some students taking on the speaking role of local politicians.

Following a refreshing break in the courtyard, they then spent time touring the building interiors and admiring the Parliament House extensive art collection, representing who we are as a state and how we have evolved over time.  READ MORE

YEAR 5 CAMP ADVENTURES

Our Halls Head and Meadow Springs Year 5 students had an amazing time at their camp last week. This year it was held at Swan Valley Adventure Centre and the students were nonstop.

Activities included canoeing, flying fox, archery, high ropes and so much more. Everyone commented on how well behaved all of our students were, so congratulations to all of them.

A big thank you to the staff who attended and helped make this week so memorable for our Year 5 students.

YEAR 5 SOLAR SYSTEM INVESTIGATION – HALLS HEAD CAMPUS

The Year 5s at Halls Head have been learning about our Solar System in Science this term. Their most recent investigation involved scaling both the planets and their distance from the sun in order to make a model that would fit on our oval.

The students were most engaged during our discussion on scaling. They worked out that the diameter of the Sun was comparable to approximately 250 return trips to Adelaide in the car!

Student Congratulations

 Congratulations to the following students:

    • Ryleigh Allan (Year 6) has qualified for the State Athletics Championships in the 1500m and 800m. She has also made the School Sports WA Aquathon Team.

    • Alasdair McKenzie (Year 8).  He is vice captain of Mandurah City FC Under-13's soccer team that won the Under-13's Armadale Cup pre-season competition

    • Adara Storey (Year 11) won a Gold medal in the Under 17 beach sprint at the Lifesaving WA Country Championship on 29 February

    • Hitomi Cording (Year 6) won a Silver medal in Under 11 Beach Sprint, a Bronze medal in Under 11 Rescue Board Rescue race and came 8th in Under 11 Board Race at the Lifesaving WA Country Championship on 29 February

SCHOOL SPORT WA – CHAMPION SCHOOLS TENNIS

In Week 5 Frederick Irwin was involved in the 2020 Champion Schools Tennis competition run by Tennis WEST.  This year we participated in the South West Zone held at Bunbury Tennis Club.  We took three teams; two senior boys and one junior boys. The students played incredibly well, and conducted themselves in an exemplary manner.

After playing all morning in a round robin competition – our Senior Boys A team was undefeated and then went on to narrowly beat Georgiana Molloy Anglican School in the final making them the winners of the South West Zone Mursell Shield.

Our other two teams played some fantastic tennis.  Our Senior Boys B team, played five games of singles and five games of doubles each.  They had some very close games and long rallies.  Our Junior Boys team played eight matches, only dropping two, and also demonstrated great sportsmanship and they gained lots of valuable game play experience.

Thank you to all the parents who drove team members to Bunbury and came up to support the teams.
