Principal's Report

Tuesday 21st February 2023

Hello Everyone,

Thank you so much to everyone who helped make Friday’s relocation a success. We had a couple of glitches with phone numbers in our system and we will make sure that they are fixed this week. Everything else went very smoothly. I had a very valid question asked about our area being declared as Extreme whilst it was still showing only High risk on the CFA and Vic Emergency website. The Department of Education and Training (DET) works closely with the CFA to protect schools. Rather than using the “regular” system (9 large areas) that is used to relay fire information to the public, they use a “local” system where they identify the weather patterns and land conditions in a small area. In our case, the information comes from Gisborne. They look at things like temperature, wind patterns, dryness of the ground and vegetation etc to make the decision.

Please remember that our Emergency Management Plans and Fire Plans are always available on the school website.

This week we have a group of 9 students heading off to the District Swimming Sports at Sunbury to represent our school. We wish them lots of luck!

Our new outdoor reading room is now close to completion. The children are very excited about using it, and it has added another lovely outdoor learning area to our school. We can build this area because of a generous donation from one of our families, and some of the profits from last year’s fete. Thanks also to the builders LPM Builders who have caused minimum disruption and have been so nice to work with.

Another big thank you to Jason from Macedon Ranges Home Furnishings in Kyneton who donated (and then delivered) a large amount of lovely furniture for our new Wellbeing Room. The room is now a cosy, welcoming space for students who may need a little extra TLC. If you can, in any way, please support this business that has so generously supported us.

Tomorrow, we have the Smile Squad coming to school to work out logistics for the free dental program being offered in schools by the State Government. Later this term, they will set up a dental clinic in the school and will assess the teeth of all students whose parents have granted permission. They will do minor treatments on site or refer students to a local dentist if they need some extra work. Notices about this program will be sent home in the next couple of weeks.

Meet the Teacher Interviews will be held at the school next Monday and Tuesday after school. This is a wonderful opportunity to let the teacher know about your child, and to build a strong relationship with the teacher. Working as a team produces the best results for your child. You have an option to do this meeting face to face or via WebEx. Please let your class teacher know your time preference via SeeSaw.

It's been a busy, happy week at school. Hope that you have had a good one too.

Kind Regards,

Trish

From the Office

Hello Everyone,

We hope that you are all settling back into school routine for Term 1 2023! So far it has been a great start to the year, and everyone seems to be happy and excited to be back.

Just a few notices and reminders for this week:

Working With Childrens Check

Throughout the year we are fortunate to have many volunteers for various activities.  As a formality we must remind all families of the Working with Childrens Check requirements.

As per Department of Education and school policy visitors and volunteers working with our children must hold a valid Working with Childrens Check card prior to attending the school.  Please refer to the Volunteer Policy on the school website for more information.

If you currently hold a WWCC card, please ensure you have added Mount Macedon Primary School as a volunteer organisation (scroll down the bottom or the page to enter up to 4 organisations).  Once the school is added to your WWCC profile, an official letter from the Department of Justice confirming your registration will be mailed to the school.

Here is a link to the WWCC website https://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/

Annual privacy reminder for our school community

Our school collects, uses, discloses and stores student and parent personal information for standard school functions or where permitted by law, as stated in the Schools’ Privacy Policy.

Please take time to read our school’s collection notice, found on our website https://www.mtmacedonps.vic.edu.au/source/Build/Privacy%20Policy%202020.pdf

For more information about privacy, refer to: Schools’ Privacy Policy — information for parents. This information is also available in ten community languages.

CSEF Funding

Do you hold a valid, means-tested concession card? The Victorian Government will provide CSEF to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child. Further information and Application Forms are attached below. These documents can also be found in the 'School Documentation' link found under the 'Community' icon in the menu bar. Please contact the School Office if you have any further enquiries.

Have a great week!

Student Wellbeing:

Please keep an eye on SeeSaw as teachers will be posting some information about our new wellbeing initiative, Skodel. After trialling with the grade 4/5/6’s last year, we are now moving to embed this wellbeing tool across the whole school.

Family Wellbeing:

The Wholehearted Parenting Manifesto: Brené Brown

https://brenebrown.com/resources/the-wholehearted-parenting-manifesto/

“I use the manifesto as a touchstone, a prayer, and a meditation when I’m wrestling with vulnerability or when I’ve got that ‘never enough’ fear.”

– Brené Brown

Pop Culture Parenting Podcast: Dr Billy Garvey

Some great listening here.. have a squiz at Ep 056 Mrs. Doubtfire + Coparenting

“Co-parenting can be challenging for those of us raising kids together, following a separation or even on our own. This week we chat about why it matters and some helpful tips beyond dressing up the as nanny and putting on a British accent.....”

– Dr. Billy Garvey

Wellbeing Room Update:

The furniture has arrived!

Again, a HUGE thank you Macedon Ranges Home Furnishings for generously donating the furniture to help us create this new student wellbeing space!

Side note: If anyone has some indoor plants that need a new home, we would very much welcome some greenery into our wellbeing room.

MMPS Update by School Reporter Harriet

Hello everyone, What a hot week we have had which of course led to our . . . . . .

Relocation day!

All of the reports have been positive. A relocation day is when the fire danger level in our area is extreme, and we take a bus to Romsey primary school for the day to stay safe.

The reading room has been going along really well, the flooring has been put in thanks to our amazing builders. We can’t wait to see it finished!

Hopefully there will be a new date for the Welcome BBQ, keep updated on the class WhatsApp groups.

The grade 6’s got their badges this week! They look amazing!

Foundation Update

This week our Foundation students have been having fun learning how to spell with the aid of some colourful letters. Here are some photos of our newest students sorting and picking the correct letters to use in order to spell their words.

Our New Outdoor Reading Area

We are in the process of constructing an exciting new space for our students! Very soon they will be able to enjoy a new outdoor reading area, which was previously a small garden area. The area has been cleaned out to make way for some decking and a seating area surrounded by lovely fernery. We can't wait until it is constructed and enjoyed by everyone, and think it is a great way to utilise our outdoor spaces. Have a look below for some more "in progress" pics! We think it is looking great so far!

Sushi Monday's - extended order cut off time

Just a quick note to say that we have extended the cut off time for ordering Sushi now to 9.15am on Monday mornings instead of 9am. We are hoping this gives parents a little more flexibility when placing orders, especially at the start of the week which we know can be busy.

Lunch Orders

Lunch Orders from Red Door cafe in Macedon will continue on a Wednesday and Friday. In the coming weeks we will be moving to an online system for ordering, however for the time being please continue to use the cash and paper bag system as per last year. Please find below the menu and orders instructions.

Hats in Term 1, 2023

Just a reminder to ensure that students have their hats to wear at school during recess and lunchtimes, as well as any other outdoor activities they may be participating in. It is important that we are all being sun smart and ensuring our children are protected from the harmful UV light that is at it's highest peak during the months of August to April, where UV index levels regularly reach 3 or above. Please also remember to name your children's hats as they quite often are lost, misplaced or left in the playground and it is handy to know who the hat belongs to!

Guitar Lessons 2023

Aaron Moar has been teaching guitar students at Mount Macedon Primary School for the last 8 years. He is keen to meet some new students who are interested in learning how to play, and continue working with current students for 2023. Aaron is a qualified teacher and has been teaching guitar for over 15 years. He conducts group lessons at the school, and teaches students of all levels and classes. His lessons are fun and interactive, where the students learn to play both modern and traditional tunes to practise their skills and technique. If you would like to enquire about guitar lessons for your child, please contact Aaron on 0438 177 764 or email: aaronmoar@infinitesound.com.au or see flyer below.

Ranges Music Network

The Ranges Music Network is very excited to be bigger and better at Mount Macedon Primary this year!  We have some exciting term-based performance and project activities planned in addition to our Group and Individual programs.

We'd also like 2023 to be the year of the bands -- with Classic Rock Band and Drum Squad taking the stage from 3:40-4:20pm after school each Wednesday.  If you are interested in learning an instrument while playing in the band or building on the technique and musicality you're developing in your group and individual lesson we'd love to have you.

THE 39 STEPS

Directed by John Rowland (Too Many Crooks & The Wrong Box)

Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Fruity melodrama and you have the intriguing, thrilling, riotous and unmissable comedy. The show hurtles a notorious fugitive and a spellbound blonde from a London music hall north by northwest to Scotland’s most remote highlands. Will they save Britain from a den of devious spies? A cast of six actors plays over 25 characters in this fast-paced tale of an ordinary man on an extraordinarily entertaining adventure. The 39 Steps contains every single legendary scene from the award-winning movie — including the chase on the Flying Scotsman, the escape on the Forth Bridge, the bi-plane crash and the sensational death-defying finale in the London Palladium.
