From the Principal, Ms Peta Hanson

Come and meet our wonderful BHPS staff!

It was lovely to see so many of our kindergarten families at our kindergarten meet the teacher evening this week. We hope that you found the session informative and enjoyed the opportunity to further connect with your child's teachers and other kindergarten families.

We warmly welcome our parents and carers of students in Years 1-6 for their 'Meet the Teachers' evening next Tuesday 18 February.  We understand after school supervision can be tricky but this event is for parents/ carers only as there is no student supervision available. Teachers will ensure important information is sent home in the event parents/ carers are unable to attend.

YEARS 1-6 MEET THE TEACHERS EVENING- TUESDAY 18 FEBRUARY FROM 4:30pm-6:30pm (classrooms)

In response to community feedback last year, we are trialling a new format for our Years 1-6 ‘Meet the Teachers’ evening this year. This year we will be opening our classrooms and facilities to our parents/ carers from 4:30pm to 6:30pm providing a two hour block of time to “pop in” and visit your child’s classroom and meet your child’s teacher. It will be a less formal event than previous years where in the past our teachers have led information sessions outlining the teaching and learning program for the year. This year we will email the class/ grade newsletters out to families the week before so you will be able to peruse them prior to the ‘Meet the Teacher’ evening. We hope that by doing this parents/ carers will be able to attend and ask any questions they may have about the teaching and learning program for that year rather than revisit what you are aware of already.

During the evening we invite you to visit your child’s classroom, meet their teacher, find out or ask questions about key information pertinent to the class/ grade, see some of the wonderful work the students have been doing in their new classes to date as well as some early learning goals for the year that may have been established. Teachers may have some questions for you too!

You will also have the opportunity to visit other classrooms and facilities in the school and meet the teachers delivering support programs or other aspects of the curriculum through release from face to face teaching. We would encourage you to also visit the following areas of our school:

The P&C, which is an integral part of our school, will be hosting welcome drinks from 6:30-7:30pm in the library and warmly welcome members of our school community to join them! This will be followed by our first P&C meeting for 2020 will be held the same evening from 7:30pm in the library and we’d love to see you there if you can make it!

We also ask that people are respectful of our neighbours when parking on Tuesday evening. Please abide by parking regulations and avoid parking over driveways.

P&C- a great way to get involved in our great school!

We warmly welcome our community to our first P and C meeting for 2020 on Tuesday 18 February in the library from 7:30pm. We have another exciting year ahead and you will have a much greater understanding of how our school operates through your attendance at these meetings. P & C meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every month during term time and new members are always welcome. This is a great opportunity for our parents/ carers to get a feel for the school culture too and meet some lovely people.

I would encourage you to come along to find out the many ways you can be involved in supporting our school, including but certainly not limited to:

* attending meetings and having input on directions

* becoming a member of a sub-committee

* assisting with fundraising

* volunteering to be a class parent representative.

We hope to see you there!

No Act of Kindness, No Matter How Small Is Ever Wasted!

This week we were very excited to welcome back our "Friendship Benches". You may remember that last year our two “Friendship Benches” designed by our SRC at the time were vandalised and destroyed. These benches had been a delightful addition to our playground and were designed for students who may find the busy nature of a school playground overwhelming, they may be feeling a bit lonely or simply unable to find their buddies! We encourage our students to sit on one of the benches and, with so many gorgeous BHPS students, there will be someone who will come up, check in and talk to them. Our students were really upset when these benches were damaged so we are all so excited to have them back! On behalf of all of us we would really like to thank Jonathan Sharp who organised to have these benches created and donated by DiversARTy Studio and Gallery in Cromer during the summer break. What an incredibly kind and thoughtful thing to do! Thanks so much to Mr Gibbons who will be installing them for us this week and making sure they are super secure!

EXCITING DANCE NEWS!

Congratulations to Beauella D for being selected into Sydney North Regional Dance Group for 2020.

She auditioned with a large group of hopeful candidates from Sydney North (Castle Hill to Palm Beach) and was successful in her pursuits.

The Sydney North Regional Dance Group focus on contemporary and lyrical styles of dance and it will be very exciting to watch Beauella perform these styles in dance festivals throughout the year.

 Well Done Beauella!

Office/ Staffing Update

Please be advised that I will be out of the office over the next few weeks as I will be working with a team of leaders in the Department on a follow up project from our London visit last November. This promises to be very exciting, setting future directions for the department especially in regards to professional learning and collaborative inquiry. Following this, I will be taking some personal leave. Mrs Stanley will relieve as Principal during my absence and I know, as always, that she will do a wonderful job and take great care of everyone during this time.

High School Information for 2021

Please keep an eye on the Beacon for information and brochures regarding ‘Open Nights’ and information evenings for our local high schools. These ‘Open Nights’ will be held in coming weeks and they are a wonderful opportunity to see high schools in action, learn about the extensive curriculum opportunities and quality teaching and learning programs that our public schools offer as well as ask any questions. We will also endeavour to include information regarding entrance exams for specialist classes, such as GATS classes as the information comes to us. Inquiries regarding these entrance exams can be made directly through the relevant high school. All Year 6 parents will receive a "Moving into Year 7 in a NSW Government School in 2021" Information Guide and Expression of Interest Form on 11 March which will outline the process of Year 7 2021 enrolment in more detail. Please don’t hesitate to contact us at school should you have any questions about this process.

Beacon Hill Public School Safety Procedures

Each year our school participates in lockdown and emergency evacuation drills. The purpose of these drills is to ensure staff and children know what is expected in the event of an emergency situation. These practices have occurred in our school for many years and are common practice throughout schools. While teachers do a wonderful job at keeping students calm and the majority of students, including kindergarten, would be used to the practices, it may help for parents to also talk to their children and to reassure them about these, if you feel your child may become anxious or worried.

In The Library

Welcome to another great year of learning, exploring, imagining, and discovering in the library.

This year Kindy and Year 1 will be borrowing 2 books every week and investigating the library, books, authors and information. Year 2 – 6 will have the opportunity to borrow every 2nd week starting week 3. They will also be exploring and developing research and information skills, digital technology and enhancing a love of reading. If students want to borrow outside of class borrowing time they can do so during 2nd half of lunch, Monday - Friday.

The Book Week theme for this year is Curious Creatures, Wild Minds. I look forward to exploring this theme with you all and having fun.

The library will be opened during the 2nd half of lunch starting week 3, Monday 17th February. This year we will open to all year groups every day but numbers will be monitored. Each day will have a different activity to do. Each day students can borrow or read quietly plus Monday lego building, Tuesday colouring and drawing, Wednesday dominoes, marbles and cards and Thursday board games.  There will also be big connect four games available to play.

Students will be responsible for looking after this equipment and packing up properly to enable all students to have great equipment to use.

Any questions please let me know.

Please follow us on Instagram for information on new books library news and information. BHPS LIBRARY

Throughout the term I will be asking for your help. I will need parent volunteers to spend some time at school to cover new books. I will ask you to come in for a few hours to help. Small children are welcome to join. I will communicate this through the Beacon and the Instagram page. Students love new books and to keep the library up to date with new material we need your help. Stay posted, I appreciate your help.
