PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

Enriching Lives and Learning

Schools play a vital role in promoting the intellectual, physical, social, emotional, moral, spiritual and aesthetic development and wellbeing of children. Every week we aim to provide opportunities that will develop the capacity of our students to reach their potential in these areas. This was evident in: the Positive Peers incursion on Monday with Year 5 & 6 students, the visit by author Matt Cosgrove to Kindergarten to Year 4 students also on Monday, the Regional Spelling Bee for primary students, activities in classrooms to acknowledge Indigenous Literacy Day on Wednesday, and the Dancefever gymnastics program on Wednesday and Thursday.  (please see positive peers photos on the right and below)

Thank you to every family for your strong support of the school throughout the term to enable us to enrich the lives and learning of our young people.

Assistant Principal, Curriculum and Instruction

In recent weeks, the school has carried out a merit selection process for the position of Assistant Principal, Curriculum and Instruction (APC&I).The APC&I position is a leadership role focusing on literacy and numeracy, curriculum and assessment and on improving teaching practices across the school. Our congratulations goes to Year 1 Assistant Principal, Ms Beck Cantlay on being selected for this position commencing next year.  This follows a State-wide advertisement, CV application, panel interview and referee checks. I would like to thank Dee Elalingam (P&C representative), Leigh Russ (staff rep.) and Anna Capra (Director's representative) for their commitment to the process and wish Beck every success in this new role at the school.

School Supervision Plan

Our School Supervision Plan provides for the supervision of students half an hour before school (ie from 8.50am), at lunch and recess times and until 3.20pm in the afternoon.  The plan is developed to identify reasonably foreseeable risks and put in place arrangements that are to protect students against injury and harm.  From 3.20pm there is no teacher supervision of playgrounds.  This includes the new infant's adventure playground and we ask that children and siblings not use the equipment after school. Our message to students is that 'this is waiting time, not a playing time.'  Thank you for helping us to keep children safe during afternoon dismissal.

Parent Interaction with Other Students

From time to time, conflict may arise between families of the school as a result of an incident which has taken place at the school. Under no circumstances are parents to speak to the children from another family to address a concern or to reprimand another student of the school. In this situation, parents are asked to refer the matter to the executive who will investigate what has taken place and resolve the conflict fairly and in the best interests of both children.

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Parent Feedback Survey

Each year we seek your feedback on how we can improve our school. This helps our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on your child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

Our Drummoyne Public School Parent Survey (utilising the Tell Them From Me “Partners in Learning” survey) will be asking parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, ipads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 20 minutes to complete and is completely confidential. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

Cybersafety

The internet has opened up wonderful opportunities to learn, socialise and share information, but it can also bring risks, especially for young people.

Parents play an important role in supporting their child’s online safety by understanding these risks and learning important tips and tricks to help reduce them.

The Cybermarvel program is designed to provide information and resources to help you and your family stay safe online.

To support families and provide current information, the Department of Education and NSW Government have organised a free webinar for parents, with a focus on digital technologies and mental health. The webinar supports parents/caregivers of 10-18 year-old children with an understanding of how games, apps and social media can influence young people’s mental wellbeing. Topics covered include:

  • Current research on young people, time online and mental health
  • What to do about accidental exposure to content about suicide, self-harm or eating disorders
  • Using games, apps and social media to support mental wellbeing
  • Strategies for young people to support friends online

Webinar dates:

Wednesday, 12 October 2022 at 7.30pm AEDT

Monday, 17 October 2022 at 12.30pm AEDT

Thursday, 27 October 2022 at 12.30pm AEDT

Class of the Week - KY

Students in class KY have been learning about the weather and seasons. They have investigated how plants grow and painted stunning sunflowers. The students used bright colours to represent this beautiful flower.

Solar Buddy Program

Over the last couple of weeks, students in 5/6O have been investigating ‘energy poverty’. Energy poverty is when developing countries and communities do not have access to sustainable and clean energy services and products. Students have been researching the impact of energy poverty on countries, communities, families and students their own age.

Did you know that 10% of the world’s population live in energy poverty?

In groups, students researched the four pillars of energy poverty:

Health - Indoor air pollution is caused by using solid fuels and kerosene for heat and light

Education - Children’s education is negatively impacted without safe and reliable source of light

Environment - Burning of solid fuels and kerosene contributes tonnes of carbon per year into the environment.

Economic - People relying on kerosene for light and heating spend almost 40% of their money to purchase kerosene

Students explored a variety of interactive graphs and data platforms to investigate developing countries with energy poverty and made comparison between their GDP, life expectancy, access to education, income and air pollution levels.

NSW Premier's Spelling Bee Regional Finals

When walking down the Year 3 corridor on Tuesday, you may have heard words being spelled. These weren’t any ordinary words, these words were words that only the gifted few could even attempt to spell.

Triet of 5O and Diaa of 4K were completing in their respectful stages in the NSW Regional Spelling Bee Finals. It was the first time the Regional Finals had taken place live online via Zoom.

Both students spelled beautifully and filled me with pride for how they represented our school. If the luck of the draw had gone a little more in their favour, they could both have progressed through to the Grand Finals to be held at the ABC Studios.

Diaa finished 7th in the Region, for Stage 2, out of 30 schools. Triet finished in 2nd place in the Region, for Stage 3, out of 28 schools.

Congratulations to both boys!

Wild at Art Competition 2022

Throughout September and October, children aged 5-12 are invited to create an original artwork of one of Australia's many threatened native animals or plants, along with a short written component on their chosen threatened species.

Online submissions are open from Wednesday 7 September (Threatened Species Day) to Monday 31 October.

Competition details:
https://www.acf.org.au/wild-at-art-competition

An important learning experience

Wild At Art is an opportunity for primary school children to learn about Australia's threatened wildlife and speak out for a future where plants, animals and people thrive.

The beautiful artworks and moving written explanations demonstrate the depth of concern and love that children have for our vanishing wildlife. Through the competition, many children feel empowered knowing that by raising awareness, they can make a difference.

Ms Richmond will be available on Tuesdays at lunchtime, after the eating bell, in her room (purple door upstairs) to discuss ideas, guide students and offer a space in which to work.
