Working Together - Achieving Together

Respect, Responsibility, Safety

Principal's Message

In Public Comprehensive High Schools HSC results will differ from one year group to the next. In small country towns, whole populations vary from one year to the next. However, the commitment from your local public high school in providing opportunities for all students does not decline from one year to the next. We all understand that HSC results do not define who we are however this year at Tumut High School Samantha Barton with an ATAR of 99.3 and Bronson Sutton with an ATAR of 97.5 is evidence that comprehensive public schools cater for all abilities including the academically gifted.

Student's Response

Samantha Barton - Snowy Hydro Year 12 Dux

I would love to credit my teachers Mr V, Mr Watts, Mr Poli and Mr O'Brien for the calibre of their teaching and the effort that they poured into me and other students - I could not have done it without them.

I'd also like to say that I am super proud of the results of my cohort, especially of Bronson of course, and that I am thankful for the support that I was offered at Tumut High School - because I couldn't have done it without that support.

Tumut High School did a lot for me and I'm so happy I made the decision to attend Tumut High. Not only was the stigma proved wrong around not being able to achieve in Tumut, but I was academically supported and emotionally supported along the way. I couldn't be more thankful of everyone at the school, truly.

Bronson Sutton - Reuben F Scarf for Commitment

With receiving both my HSC marks and ATAR this week, I find myself reflecting on my time spent at Tumut High School. Reflecting not only on the plethora of opportunities presented to me, but more importantly on the teachers who encouraged me to take advantage of everything that the school offered. From cattle parading to representing Australia in the F1 in Schools Challenge, without a doubt the opportunities I took advantage of shaped me and my schooling, and for that I would like to extend a huge thank you to the teachers who offered their time (and often money) to provide them to me and other students.

I would also like to thank the staff and teachers at THS for their support. Not only my classroom teachers, but all of the teachers who I have harassed this past year with late night emails and past papers to mark. As cliched as it is, I wouldn’t have been able to do it without you, and I’m extremely grateful for your guidance.

Year 10 Australian Business Week - ABW

Year 10 partook in the 2019 Australian Business Week in early December. We were divided into six teams – red, blue, purple, green, yellow and orange – each with approximately 15 members. I was put into team purple. To start the week off we broke off into groups and played some ice breaker games with each other, the teachers and the principal Mr. Dixon. Then the industry we would be competing in was revealed – hospitality, and we moved into our individual rooms, wherein we designated roles and begun the seemingly unending production of posters.

Our marks for the week were separated into the simulation, wherein we controlled a hotel chain in the computer and competed quarter by quarter for a higher share price. Then there was the business report, where we were to write out a lengthy document outlining the choices we made, the outcomes of said choices and what we planned to do in the future. There was the oral presentation, in which we needed to tout how good our hotel was regarding both what it featured, and the results of the simulation. There was the video advertisement, which had to be 30 seconds long and needed to outline the elements of your business that would attract tourists and finally there was the stalls in the hall, where we were to try to sell our product.

My team - Team 3 - which was purple, performed well in the simulation, we ended up on top and owned three hotels by the end. Our business report outlines our successes and failures, what we had learned and why. Our team perhaps ill advisably  took out a $2.5 million debenture, which we intended to use to purchase additional hotels, but it was revealed that we needed a high enough cash flow that the bank would recognise our ability to pay it back – so after holding onto the cash for half a year, we paid it back overnight, though we highlighted our virtually instantaneous recovery in our report.

Our oral presentation consisted of a beginning auction, where I hyped how awesome our hotel was, and strategically placed members of team 3 placed ‘bids’ to show how excited someone should be having the ability to stay at our hotel. Then Catelin explained everything our hotel had to offer before I finished it off with some absolutely mint graphs and a brief explanation of why they were good, and Molly delivered a striking conclusion. Our video manned by Molly Davies showed footage of our hotel (that may not have been filmed by us) and played some awesome music in the background. The display stalls all looked very impressive, it was a chance to show off our newly learned advertising skills. At our stall we were giving away lollies and purple pancakes and a guess at a jar filled with jelly beans. Team 1 – red – won the people’s choice, and we won the judges over.

All in all, it was an awesome week, which we had the honour of winning – our team name Purple Paradise is to be engraved on a trophy, and we each got medals. I think everybody learned at least something, and those who got involved more, certainly seemed to get more out of it. I personally learned much about the hospitality industry, writing a business report, being an auctioneer and jointly owning a business. Good luck to the future years who partake in this great program!

Finally, on behalf of Year 10, thank you to Tumut High Staff for their encouragement and support of this program whilst being our mentors. Thank you to the 3 judges for giving up their time and also a special thank you to Mr Brown for organising the whole week. The students should be congratulated for their efforts, working outside of their comfort zone and for producing some awesome reports, advertisements, presentations and trade displays.

ABW Teams

Ten Trek Group 2

The second Ten Trek Group set off for camp on 9th December for the week. The trip began with a 2 hour drive filled with theme songs from our childhood television shows. We were dropped off at the start of the Round Mountain Trail and we walked our first 2kms to the first hut.

During the week in total we walked around 52kms. The distance was filled with more hills than you could count with your fingers and toes and about the same amount of blisters!

Supervising teachers were Mrs Beale and Mr Somerville and they helped us learn the effective skills needed to be a hiker whilst raising morale with games and awards for all - even a little spare food for the students who ran out or couldn't master cooking on the trangia.

The experience was one none of us will ever forget. The fact that we made it to the end of the hike (in one piece), made us feel amazing and confident - although a little sore!. Those who made it to the top of Mt. Jagungal were left feeling fantastic as they saw the spectacular views Jagungal had to offer.

As a group we would like to thank the real winners, Trek leader Mrs Beale, Mr Somerville and Mr Hart and those staff involved in organising. We appreciated the opportunity to participate in such a wonderful experience.

Summer School

The Australian National University (ANU) invited Year 11 students from regional, rural and remote Australia to come and experience what it’s like to be a university student. The event included staying at a residential hall, attending interactive lectures and practical classes, meeting current ANU students, and exploring the city of Canberra.

Our Year 11 students thoroughly enjoyed themselves at the ANU Summer School. They gained firsthand experience of the university’s accommodation, facilities and courses.

This was Tumut High's first time competing in the Theatresports competition and being winners is an amazing accomplishment.

Congratulations to Miss Sutherland and students.

Abbey at NSW State Debating Championships

On the 2nd to 4th of December I went to Sydney as a representative for the Riverina in the Junior State Debating Championships.

To get to this point I was selected from my school debating team who made it to the State quarter finals in the Year 9/10 Premier's Debating Challenge. On Monday, I flew from Wagga to Sydney to meet my team members for the first time at the airport. We also met our coach for the camp.

The camp was held at the Women’s College at Sydney University. Teams from all over NSW were there. Everyone was immediately so kind and as nervous as my team.

On the first day we debated twice and lost them both but it was great debating with people we had never met before. The next day we debated three more times and lost them all again but we learnt so much from the experience and made some really great friends too.

I am glad I took this opportunity and I’d like to thank Mr V for giving me the knowledge and skills to make it so far in the competition.
