Newsletter 20 May 2022

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers

The good news first! I am very pleased to share that we will be resuming Assemblies from Week 4. Dates and presenting classes will be published as soon as we have confirmed Band and Orchestra availability. This is an integral part of our school and we have most definitely missed the sharing of learning, coming together as a school, hearing the Band and Orchestra, and having the opportunity to extend all of this to our community.

Once again, our Parents and Friends have outdone themselves. Our Mothers’ Day Breakfast, held last Friday, was bigger and better even than the first year. It was simply great to welcome so many people back into the school. I want to recognise our student helpers. So many of our senior students got involved, both by helping and entertaining through Orchestra and Choir. The enthusiasm and willingness to contribute was evident from my very first conversation with classes and just didn’t waver!

We have continued our upgrading with the installation of three Z Touch screens. This now sees the same technology in all of our classrooms and has enabled us to continue with the reformatting of rooms to create more effective instructional spaces. Generally speaking, we have been able to separate our ‘teaching wall’ from our displays meaning students can focus on the learning without distraction. We have engaged the idea of the ‘classroom as the third teacher’ giving consideration to displays, equipment and layout. In doing this we are asking ourselves:

      • What does the classroom tell about the students’ current learning?
      • How is the classroom environment encouraging students to be problem solvers?
      • What, in the classroom, is enabling students to increase their independence?
      • Is the classroom aesthetically appealing?

We hope, by answering these questions as we create, we will further support our students.

If you have been driving past lately, you may have noticed not only the roadworks but the colourful design being painted on our OSHC building. Gen is a local artist committed to bringing colour and brightness to otherwise dull spaces. There have been so many comments from passers by, we know it is already bringing joy to the wider community and hope you will enjoy the progress photos included below.

Now I find myself at the end of this newsletter contribution, I realise there is only good news - that's Crafers!

        Kind regards

        Chan

        Got old hats?

During the OSHC Vacation Program in July, the children are going to be creating some scarecrows for our garden. If anyone has an old straw hat or similar to donate, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

        Room 3 News

This term the students have begun the topic Business and Economics. They have learnt about needs and wants, goods and services and resources. The resources were divided into natural, human and capital. Either individually or with a partner, they were asked to present all 3 resources with an explanation and a picture or photo to show their understanding. These are now on display in the classroom, photos of them are below.

Our English topic has been Media texts, looking at news and feature articles. The first feature article was about why sour lollies can be bad for children. It was rather a graphic article showing a young child’s tongue with a small hole in it. This was a result of eating 10 sour lollies at once. Hopefully it is a lesson learnt!

In Art the students have focused on drawing techniques, replicating a rainforest animal and showing it in its natural habitat. They started with a paint wash background, added the forest details and then practiced drawing the animal then transferring the ideas onto the finished piece. Many are very impressive.

It has already been a very productive start to the term.
