Principal's Message

School Captains 2023

We have reached that time of the year when we undertake the process of electing new school captains for the upcoming school year. This past week, the students in Year 5 and the staff have submitted nominations for those current Year 5 students that are deemed to be great role models and potential student leaders. Every year, it is very challenging for students and staff to narrow down the list due to the outstanding students to select from. From the nominations, we congratulate the following students who received the most nominations and have been invited to present speeches and stand for election:

  • Mostafa Akhal, Gus Boys, William Corbin, Nate Dixon, Jackson Horvat,  Kai Nelson and Tom Whitemore
  • Beth Ireland, Sophia Hunter, Holly McIlroy, Grace Rokobaro, Layla Rollings and Paige Waller

This is a fine and upstanding group of students, all worthy of the opportunity to stand for school captain. In congratulating them, I would also like to acknowledge the high calibre of students that have missed out. There were a number of other students who received nominations and were also worthy of the opportunity to stand for school captain, but understandably were disappointed to miss out. We have an excellent group moving into Year 6 next year, who, regardless of the outcome of the school captain election process, will be wonderful role models and genuine leaders in our school. The nominees above will be delivering their speeches to a whole-school assembly in the hall on Monday 14 November commencing at 9:15am. Family and friends are invited to attend – join us if you can.

Presentation Day

Teachers are now finalising the award recipients for our upcoming annual presentation day. As has been our custom in the past, we will be notifying parents and carers via email in the week ahead of those students who will be receiving an award. We do this as a courtesy to assist families to make arrangements to attend the Presentation Day Assembly. If you have more than one child currently attending Lambton Public School, the notification will not disclose which child is to receive an award, only that a member of your family will receive an award. We would kindly request that you do not share with your child/ren that one of them is to receive an award as we would like them to be surprised on the day when their name is announced. Presentation Day will take place in the MPC at Lambton High School on Wednesday 7 December starting at 9:30am. Please note that everyone is invited to join us to celebrate our students’ achievement at the presentation day assembly, regardless of whether your child will receive an award or not. We are looking forward to being able to do this as a whole school community for the first time altogether since 2019.

Uniform Update

Last week, the Uniform Review Committee met with representatives from our new uniform supplier The School Locker to consider fabric samples and garment styles as well as give feedback on some initial uniform design concepts. As this work is undertaken, we are getting excited that solid progress towards a great outcome for our students and families is beginning to be made. The design team will make further adjustments to the uniform concepts presented to the uniform committee before we will be able to share them with the whole community for feedback. Stay tuned, more to come soon.

Remembrance Day Service

Finally, on Friday I had the privilege of accompanying the School Captains to attend and represent our school at the Lambton/New Lambton RSL sub—branch Remembrance Day ceremony. It was a very simple but meaningful ceremony. We received at this ceremony a gift from the State Member for Wallsend, Mrs Sonia Hornery. The gift was a book for our library. Our thanks to Sonia for the gift and to the Lambton/New Lambton ESL sub-branch for the opportunity to attend and participate in this ceremony.

Kind Regards

David Holland

Students of the Week - Term 4 Week 4

Congratulations to our students of the week for Week 4 of this term

Covid Update

The number of people contracting the Covid-19 virus has been rising again over the past week with health authorities encouraging citizens to be extra vigilant with adopting the measures that we know to be Covid-smart. We remind all families that if children are unwell, they should not attend school until they are well and symptom free.

We hope to shortly distribute further RAT tests for each family to assist you with monitoring for signs of Covid-19. If in doubt, please support your child to conduct RAT tests any morning where they have cold or flu-like symptoms before attending school. If we continue to work together and respect this advice, we stand a better chance of avoiding outbreaks of Covid in the school. If your child does test positive, we still appreciate you notifying our office so that we can keep the whole community alert to potential risk or exposure.

SRC Out of Uniform day this Friday

Our SRC will be hosting an Out of uniform day this Friday 18 November to raise money for the Starlight Children's Foundation at the John Hunter Hospital.

There is no theme for the day however students are invited to bring a gold coin to support our Starlight Foundation Fundraiser. Please remember to choose appropriate clothing for the weather and wear enclosed shoes.

Why the Starlight Foundation?

Starlight gives sick kids the fun and happiness that has a lasting positive impact on their lives. Starlight's serious about fun because they see the impact it creates on kids in hospitals and communities across the country every day. When you give to Starlight, you're helping sick kids feel happier, more confident and ready to face life's challenges.

Year 4 Buddy Training

All Year 4 students will commence their Better Buddy training this Friday in preparation for their role of being Kindergarten Senior Buddies in 2023. Training will take place in the school library between 9:30 am -12:30 pm with students enjoying a special celebratory pizza lunch at the conclussion of their training.  Please ensure permission has been given for students to participate including their pizza preference.

New Online Permission forms

Permission forms for school activities are sent via email. Permission forms are sent from the email address ‘noreply@mail.schoolbytes.education’ and the sender appears as Lambton Public School.

What do you need to do - Please check your junk/spam folder to ensure you are receiving all school communication. If you have not received notes, please contact the office ASAP so we can check that your email address I up to date in our system.

Due Date - Due dates for permission are usually set 7 days prior to excursions to allow staff to complete organisation of the event. Staff need to complete risk assessments based on students attending, confirm bus transport and venue entry and plan for students staying at school. Reminders are sent 3 days prior to the due date when permission is not received. If permission is not received prior to the due date, students will be unable to attend the excursion and arrangements will be made for them to remain at school.

Child not attending - If you know your child won’t be attending the excursion, please respond by selecting ‘No’ to permission.  This will assist us in planning our events and also prevent reminders being sent to you.

Trading Cards

There are a number of students currently bringing either sports related or Pokemon style cards to school to show their friends during breaks. In some instances, students are trading cards with friends, and this is leading to issues when trades are not equitable. Although we discourage students from trading cards with friends at school, it does still occur at times without teachers knowledge. Please remind your child that if they elect to bring cards to school to show friends that it is best to save trading for outside of school.

School Assembly

Our next school assembly is scheduled to take place on Thursday 24 November and will be led by 1/2S. Family and friends are invited to join us if you can from 2:00 pm.

Planning is underway for our upcoming Year 6 Farewell which will be held at Wallsend Diggers on Tuesday  6 December. Permission notes will be emailed home this week with formal invitations given to students shortly.

A popular highlight of the evening is our slideshow presentation featuring  photos of the students in both Kindergarten and Year 6.

If your child was not enrolled at Lambton Public School in Kindergarten we would appreciate parents and carers forwarding a copy of their child’s Kindergarten photo to be included in our slideshow.  Photos can be emailed to lambton-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au or alternatively bring or send the photo to the school office and where staff will scan the photo. If emailing the school, please be sure to include your child’s name in subject name of email.

Our P&C has a long and outstanding history of supporting the work of the school, but we need more people to reconnect and get involved.  Please see the attachment below for further information. COVID-smart measures to continue throughout Term 4

  • From Week 1, Monday 10 October, the following COVID-smart measures will remain in place in our schools:
  • Students and staff must stay at home if unwell and test for COVID-19 if showing any symptoms
  • Extra cleaning of bathrooms, drinking fountains and other high touch areas will continue in Term 4
  • Masks continue to be strongly encouraged for all staff, students and school visitors, particularly when indoors and when physical distancing is not possible. Masks continue to be mandatory for all staff working with students at greater risk of severe illness if they were to get COVID-19.
  • Household or close contacts who are symptom-free can attend mainstream schools if they receive a negative RAT result every day for 5 school days and wear a mask (staff and high school students) while on site.
  • Natural ventilation will be maintained with windows and doors open whenever possible, including when cooling/heating systems are in use.
  • Additional circuit breaker measures continue to be implemented at schools when the risk of transmission within the school or wider community is considered high. Some schools may be directed to temporarily reintroduce additional COVID-19 measures including mandatory mask-wearing to minimise transmission risks.
  • Refer to COVID-smart measures for further details.

Parenting Ideas

Research shows that children start making meaningful friendships from around the age of four and from that point onwards, friendships will contribute to their wellbeing, learning, confidence and mental health. But understanding what a good friend is can be tricky. This week's article discusses strategies you can use to help explain what being a good friend means to your child and how they can be one.
