Binalong Bulletin

Term 1, Week 6 2023

From the Principal

Last week the P&C held their AGM and welcomed some new committee members as well as electing the new executive for 2023.

President - Max Giles

Vice President - Hannah Edwards

Secretary - Ali Spencer

Treasurer - Tamika Paterson

The BPS team looks forward to working with our P&C to support and enhance student learning and well-being at our school.

Congratulations to all of our students who swam their little hearts out at our school swimming carnival and then those who qualified to represent the school at the district swimming carnival. Well done team!

We would love some help with covering some of our new library books and decodable readers as well as re-covering some of our chairs. If you're able to help out, we would love to hear from you!

NAPLAN 2023

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills. Each year students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in tests for writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

From 2023, NAPLAN is moving to Term 1 and will take place from Wednesday 15 March to Monday 27 March. The reason for this change is so that results can be returned to schools earlier in the year which will support teachers to understand the learning needs of their students and plan accordingly.

NAPLAN tests are just one part of our school learning assessment program and questions are primarily based on knowledge, understanding and skills gained from the prior year of schooling.

In preparation for NAPLAN 2023, our school will undertake activities to help students to become familiar with the format and functionality of the online tests. These activities are not an assessment of student ability and will not be marked. Students and parents can access the public demonstration site (https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site) to familiarise themselves with NAPLAN and the types of questions and tools available. Excessive preparation for NAPLAN is not required nor recommended.

If you have any questions about NAPLAN, please contact your child’s teacher.

Statewide NAPLAN practice testing will commence in Week 6.

Cancer Council - Healthy Lunch Box

Developed by dietitians, you can trust our website to help you with all things lunch boxes. Recipes and ideas are family-friendly, packed full of fruit, vegies and wholegrains and use only simple, budget-friendly ingredients.

The Healthy Lunch Box website was developed in partnership with OUTRUN CANCER to help families plan and pack a healthy lunch box. Packing a healthy lunch box can set up healthy eating habits that last a lifetime.

We know 1 in 3 cancers can be prevented by having a healthy lifestyle, which includes eating fruit, vegetables, wholegrains and high fibre foods. Aussie kids don’t eat enough fruit, vegetables and wholegrains so packing them in their lunch box is an easy way to get them eating more.

This website is a one-stop shop for everything families need to know about packing a healthy lunch box. The website provides inspiration and ideas for sandwich alternatives, sandwich filling ideas, snacks, swaps for unhealthy snack foods and information on the five food groups. All our recipes are packed full of fruit, vegies and wholegrains, are nut free, use simple budget friendly ingredients and have been tested so you know they work.

The interactive lunch box builder lets parents and kids plan and pack a lunch box with the healthy foods they like. Children are more likely to eat healthy items if they have chosen them and if their parents eat them too.

At Cancer Council NSW we’re passionate about helping families eat better. The dietitians at CCNSW  base the website information on the Australian Dietary Guidelines so you know it is trustworthy.   We recommend everyone eat a balanced diet from across the five food groups including wholegrain breads & cereals, vegetables & salads, fruit, lean meat & alternatives and dairy.

Student Wellbeing

https://kidshelpline.com.au/schools/kids-helpline-school

Kids Helpline is Australia’s only free (even from a mobile), confidential 24/7 online and phone counselling service for young people aged 5 to 25.Qualified counsellors at Kids Helpline are available via WebChat, phone or email anytime and for any reason.

Since 1991, Australia’s kids and young people have been turning to our professional, specialised counsellors, no matter who they are, where they live or what they want to talk about.

Over this time, we have responded to over 8.5 million contacts. For some young people, connecting with Kids Helpline has been a life-saving experience, while for others it’s about practical help and emotional support at the critical moment they need someone to listen.

We will run an on-demand Introduction to Kids Helpline & Help Seeking Session at our next assembly so students and parents can learn more about support services available to them.
