Principal`s Report

Kerri  Beavan.

It is with great sadness that we share with our WPS community the news that our much loved lollipop lady, Kerri Beavan passed away quite suddenly last week. Kerri is a very well-known and valued community member who has been significantly involved with the school for almost 20 years. Kerri’s daughters, Brianna and Kayla attended Wyong Public School from Kindergarten which is when Kerri first began volunteering. Whether it was in the canteen or assisting with fundraising, Kerri was always ready to help. As a life member of our P&C she was always willing to take on responsibilities no matter what was required.

Kerri has organised and supervised our Annual Book Fair for some time and has been the Book Club coordinator for many years. Kerri loved literature and relished in sharing her love of books with the students of our school.

Kerri has worked for the council as our school crossing lady for many years, keeping our children, parents and staff safe as they journey to and from school each day. For many of our students her face was the first that they would see every morning as they arrived at school and the last to say goodbye in the afternoon.

Kerri will be deeply missed by our school community and we pass on our heartfelt condolences to her husband Lionel and daughters, Brianna and Kayla as well as her many family and friends in the local area.

The school is working with the P&C to determine how best and appropriate to support Kerri’s family.

If any one would like to support Kerri’s family in this hard time, the following fundraisers have been established in her honour.

  • Trivia night Saturday, June 8th $10 per person at Wyong Golf Club. Booking essential 0413581448
  • McDonald's Wadalba Tuesday, June 11 between 6-7pm. Raffle and competition inside store 10% of proceeds will be donated to Kerri’s family.

Rest in Peace, Kerri.

Staff Professional Learning

Later in term 4 the staff would normally complete two school development days for training and planning. This year we have been completing various professional development and mandatory training after school in order to gain additional time which will allow both of these end of year days to be school free. So far the staff have completed mandatory CPR / Anaphylaxis training, as well as completed various professional learning on our Writing focus, Consistent Teacher Judgement and modules in the Learning Progressions. These session times and more will allow these end of term 4 days to be school free for all staff who attended.

New Equipment for playground

The new climbing equipment has finally been completed in the playground. Children this week have begun using the new equipment which we hope they are enjoying the use of. At recess time we have had to limit the play to either K-2 or 3-6 students to reduce the numbers of children using the area as it has proven popular. There will be some basic rules for use, but from all reports the children have enjoyed using the new equipment and it seems to be a good investment.

NAPLAN

The NAPLAN week went well here at school with no issues and the children all appeared to have a good week with the various assessments. Results will be released later in term 3. Our school had no issues with the assessments themselves as the children did the paper / pencil assessment and not the online version.Thank you to Mrs Arnot and Mr Kember for their organisation of this.  Students who were absent during the assessments had the chance to complete the assessments on Friday of week 3.

Leaving School Early

Please could parents/carers who need to collect their children from school early be reminded that no student is to leave the school early without informing the office staff so that they can process an early leaving slip. The time someone leaves is a legal requirement and we thank you for your assistance with this matter.

Even if a classroom teacher has been informed of the need to leave early and the student is waiting in the office area, office staff must still be informed. This procedure is in place to ensure the safety of your children so your support in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Other School News

Choralfest

On Wednesday 8th May, the Wyong Public School Key Choir travelled to Warner’s Bay to compete in Hunter and Central Coast Choralfest. Our choir performed three pieces: Flooding Rains, I Wanna Sing and El Pajarito. We are proud to announce that the Key Choir secured second place in the Mixed Harmony section of the competition. The choir have come a long way since they last performed at Choralfest and have dramatically improved their harmonies, dynamics and ability to blend as a choir. Congratulations Key Choir, we can’t wait to see what is in store for you next!

Practice Makes Perfect

On Friday 24th May, Wyong Public School string students travelled to Newcastle for a regional rehearsal for the Festival of Instrumental Music. This performance will take place at the Sydney Opera House in August where our students will take the stage with music students from all over New South Wales. The string students have been rehearsing four challenging pieces since January and were put through their paces at Friday’s rehearsal. There is a long road ahead until the Opera House but we are all very proud of the amazing work this talented ensemble have already put in. Congratulations string players, you are doing a wonderful day.

Mother's Day Breakfast

What a fabulous morning we had last Friday for our annual Mother's Day Breakfast extravaganza! Our wonderful WPS staff came in bright and early to help serve our special families with a delicious range of food. We got through 14kgs of bacon, 140 sausages, 50 loaves of bread and over 300 eggs! We were also able to give away some wonderful raffle prizes to our deserving Mums. Stage 1 Taronga Zoo Excursion

On Thursday the 16th of May Year 1 and Year 2 went down to Sydney and visited Taronga Zoo. On the way there we were lucky enough to drive over the Sydney Harbour Bridge. During our time at the zoo, students attended a workshop and got to pat some backyard buddies. We spent the rest of our time exploring the zoo and seeing many animals and their habitats. Congratulations to all of the students as they should be very proud of themselves for representing our school with their excellent behaviour. It was a fantastic day!

Stage 3 Excursion Katandra Reserve

Over the last few weeks Stage 3 classes ventured to Katandra Reserve for an excursion with the staff from The Rumbalara Environmental Education Centre.

Students were involved in hands on activities such as using a compass and binoculars.  They investigated the animals of Katandra through a fun activity that helped students to discover tracks, scats and other traces.

The students walked from St Johns Lookout to Seymour Pond to see changes in the vegetation. They traced their path on a map and used iPads (provided by Rumbalara) to take photos of human impact. Students recorded data on the characteristics of rainforest and eucalypt forests using illustrations and field work instruments.

All students enjoyed the experience and were very well behaved on the excursion. Congratulations Stage 3.

Zone Cross Country

Last Thursday 56 students represented our school at the Tuggerah Lakes Zone Cross Country which was held at EDSAAC oval. The students were competing against 11 schools in our zone.

Congratulations to all the students who competed on the day as it was a pleasure to watch the students compete with determination, pride and sportsmanship. The encouragement Wyong students were giving each other and students from other schools was outstanding.

A big congratulations also goes to Isaac who came first in the 11 year old boys and now goes on to compete at Sydney North in a few weeks. Good luck Isaac!

Thank you to Ms Sturgess and Mr Mac for all their work in the lead up to the event and on the day.

Walk Safely to School Day

On Friday the 17th of May, students and staff participated in Walk Safely to School Day. Stickers were given out to each student as they came into school by staff members if they walked in safely, crossed the road safely, or even walked from home to school. Those stickers were then counted towards the classroom tallies that were taken during the day to find out which class had the most students who walked safely to school.

By the end of the day we had two winning classes, one from Infants and another from Primary. KA won for Infants with 17 students who walked safely, and 6W won for Primary with 28 students who walked safely to school. However, we had a total of 241 students who had walked safely to school. These students should all be commended for the safe and responsible way they come into school.

A big thank you to our Year 6 leaders who participated in completing the class tallies, and to the classes who created and hung up posters during the week to advertise the event, they looked wonderful and were excellent to see around the school. Well done, everyone.

New Sign-in Process

A new sign-in process is being trialled at the school to improve the safety of our students and staff and ensure that all Department of Education policies and procedures are followed.

All visitors to the school needing to come on site are required to sign-in at the office.

Anyone needing to come on site please bring PHOTO ID with you the next time you visit to register your details (even if the school has previously cited it). All future sign-ins will then be simplified.
