Principal Changes

I’d like to inform the community that this will be my final term at Captains Flat Public School. I was recently appointed Principal of Goulburn North Public School, and I will begin this new stage of my career at the commencement of the 2023 academic school year. However, I have also decided to take some long service leave in the final few weeks of 2022, to visit family and friend up north that I have been unable to see since the commencement of the Covid crisis. I will finish my time at Captains Flat Public School at the end of Week 8, Thursday 1 December.

Fiona Senior-Conroy, Director Education Leadership for the Queanbeyan School Network, will appoint an interim Principal at the end of 2022. She is also hoping to complete the new appointment of a new principal during term 4, which will enable the new principal to commence at Captains Flat Public School from the beginning of 2023.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Principal of Captains Flat Public School. I’d like to thank you all for your support and dedication to the school. The school is truly a great place to work and learn. I leave with established plans in place that are reflective of the students’ and community needs to ensure continuity of learning will continue. The current School Improvement Plan is well developed and reflective of the learning journey that the school has been working towards for several years. We have established clear learning directions and created an environment that has plenty of resources to ensure our students get every opportunity to learn successfully.

I will miss the staff, students, and community at Captains Flat Public School. You all hold a special place in my heart. I cannot wait to hear about all your future successes.

Additional Term 4 Staff Changes and Adjustments

  • Karen Mackintosh, our School Administration Manager, will take long Service Leave from the beginning of Week 3 and will return to work at CFPS at the commencement of the 2023 academic year. Mrs Tammy Lawler, the School Administration Manager at Bredbo PS, will relieve one day a week on Mondays during this time.
  • Mr Mark Palmer will return to Captains Flat PS on Thursdays. He will resume his General Assistant workaround the school.
  • Mr Russell McKinley, who relieved for Mark Palmer during his absence, will move into a classroom support role from Tuesdays to Thursdays. He brings a wealth of experience to the school from his work in this capacity built from 17 years supporting students at Queanbeyan High School.
  • The Grey Group will no longer operate as a stand-alone group. Students in this group will commence full integration into Green and Gold Groups with plenty of support.

Curriculum and Instruction

What are the benefits of online assessment?

At Captains Flat Public School, we are very fortunate to have access to multiple tools and resources to support our assessment processes. Some of these resources include online assessment. Online assessment can be an invaluable tool in the teaching and learning cycle for a few reasons. Some of these reasons include, the addition of sounds and visuals to support understanding and engagement, accessibility tools to support learners with additional learning requirements (such as text to audio or magnifying tools), the quick turn around of data and reports that are easily accessible for reviewing and reflecting on student results, as well as adaptive testing. Adaptive testing is when the assessment adjusts appropriately to where the student is at. The online platform is able to respond to the data the student is providing and adapt questions to either scaffold or extend the student.

Wellbeing and Wellness

Tips for Motivation to be Physically Active

  • Be creative with your time

Try breaking physical activity into smaller chunks and get creative with how you do it; move faster when doing household chores, stand when you are talking on the phone, get moving in the ad break of your favourite TV show. Take a look at our 5 minute activities to add to your day.

  • Start small

Choose a low intensity activity like walking. Start slowly and build up gradually. If you're concerned, you can visit your doctor first for a health check.

    • Measure your success

Measure your success, not just the number on the scales. Time yourself or count how many repetitions of an exercise you can complete. Tracking your fitness and strength improvements will help keep you motivated.

Gold Group have been learning how to become mathematicians! Students have used counters, ten frames, number lines, hundred charts, mini whiteboards, and other resources to solve addition and subtraction problems. The focus of lessons have been to not just find the answer or solve very challenging problems, but to explain reasoning and find more than one solution.

    Green Group Story

The Green Group have always been interested in integrating games into our lessons. They have recently found a love for Wordle and Mathler, which has been invaluable to our literacy and numeracy lessons.

    P&C News

Our last meeting decided that our meetings would alternate each term, from an early meeting in week 3 to a later meeting in week 8. This should allow for more people to come at least once a term.

The P&C will coordinate a Christmas Bingo Family Fun Night that will be held on Saturday November 19. We aim to make this event more family oriented so every member of the school community can participate in this event. We encourage you all to add this date to your calendar and come along on this fun night.

    • Semester 2 Meeting dates:
    • Term 4 Week 3: Monday 24 October at 3.15pm
    • Term 4 Week 8: Monday 28 November at 6.00pm

The P&C will forward membership forms to all student families and encourages all to be involved and come and hear about the amazing things we do at Captains Flat PS.
