Weir State School Newsletter

Term 4 Week 3

Principal's Pen

Welcome to this edition. Week 3 and the students are firmly entrenched in their learning for the term. Well done to our students for their continued great behaviour and smart choices in getting the job done at school.  Things are shaping up nicely to finish the term and year off well and the students must be commended for their efforts in keeping their attitudes and schoolwork firmly focussed. Please keep an eye on your child’s bag for notices as this term is extremely busy and will require good communication to ensure things operate smoothly.  Our school is a great place to be! Well done Weir students!

WORLD TEACHERS DAY – This week we will celebrate world teachers’ day at Weir State School.  Thank you to all of our wonderful teachers that work so very hard and make a difference every day to our students. It’s a pleasure to work with such dedicated people to better the education of our kids and make Weir the great place it is.  Our school has some of the hardest working teachers around and we are lucky to have them on staff. Happy World Teachers Day to our wonderful ‘CHALKIES’!

SCHOOL SWIMMING  - Our school swimming has begun and the kids involved have been fabulous with their swimming lessons and learning how to safely interact with the water, stay afloat and learn strokes and movement related to water safety. Congratulations to Mrs Francis for her organisation with the swimming lesson times and sessions …Well done Weir.

CONTINUING STUDENT ENROLMENT  - I would like to ask parents to please notify our office if your child is not attending our school next year. This is important for our school as we are beginning to work on class and staffing models for the 2020 school year and with enrolments on the increase we will need to arrange classes accordingly and logistics of equipment and room preparation. Thanks for your help as this will set us up well for next year.

PREP ENROLMENTS AND OPEN DAY - Our prep open days and information sessions will take place throughout the term. Information will go home in our newsletters and be placed on our “SKOOLBAG” APP and our school website.  If you know of anyone who has a child due to start prep in 2020 please pass on the messages about our prep activities and what our great school has to offer. We’d love them to be part of our great school and always welcome families who would like to become part of the Weir State School family. Our Prep Transition Days will begin this week ..we’re really looking forward to having our 2020 students join our school.

SELF-ESTEEM - Self-esteem is the opinion we have of ourselves and how we perceive that others view us. Children who have high self-esteem are more able to cope with whatever happens in their lives; they are more willing to try new things and can cope better if things don’t work out the way they wanted. Children who have low self-esteem are afraid of failing and give up easily; they are less likely to try new things and are less able to make good decisions about their life. To help children who have a poor self-image you need to be gentle with their already sensitive ego.

Encourage them to:

  • Think positively about themselves. Write a list of all their strengths, skills and attributes.
  • Face their fears one at a time and set small, realistic goals.
  • Understand that everyone makes mistakes and learns from them.
  • Join a club or regular after school activity.
  • ‘Have a go’ and be happy with the effort rather than the result.
  • Do things for themselves (eg. household chores, personal grooming).
  • Make decisions about a range of situations.
  • Accept and give praise or recognition for a job or effort well done.
  • Spend time alone with you so that you can tell them how special they are.

Talk to your children about their self-esteem. Let them know that they will become more confident as they grow older and have more experiences in life. Everyone has fears, but facing them allows you to learn and grow from each one.

THIS WEEKS PROVERB  - “ IF TEACHING IS A GIFT EVERY DAY…..THEN THERE IS NO SURPRISE ABOUT LEARNING”

Have a great week, thanks for reading and GO THE FIRE !!

Prep 2020 Transition Program… This week we welcomed our first group of Prep 2020 children, as our awesome Weir C&K crew came over as part of our Prep 2020 Transition program. The children were broken in to 2 groups (Gabul & Poss) and participated in a rotation of activities that saw them experience PE with Mrs Francis, Music with Mrs Wilson and ICT/Robotics with Mrs Paton. The children also had some play time on our Prep equipment and finished off the day with a healthy snack and drink.

It was so great to see the children engaged with some of the learning they will experience next year, and the smiles on their faces was priceless. They all showed how excited they are to come to ‘Big’ School, and we look forward to welcoming them back next week for another day of fun and learning.

Please remember to contact our office if you have a child that is due to start Prep in 2020 and enquire about our Transition Days and also place your name down for a Prep Interview which we will be taking place in Week 8. For those who have put their child’s name down for Prep next year, you will receive a call from the school soon confirming the date and time of your interview.

Rule of the Week…

Our PBL Rule of the Week this week is a very important one that applies in all areas of school and is essential in all students being successful…

BE RESEPCTFUL

‘Listen and follow all staff instructions’  Students found meeting this expectation increase their chances of receiving a Gotcha. Students place their Gotchas into their class bucket and go into the draw to go to the Gotcha Room on Friday for an afternoon of fun and games with Mrs Thompson and the team.

Building an Exemplary School Culture… How do we define culture and what makes one exemplary? In many ways an exemplary culture is something that is intangible and cannot be seen; it is more of a ‘feeling’ that you have in a school. People working in a school with an exemplary culture feel positive and respond positively to one another.

An exemplary culture in a school is about staff, parents, students and the community feeling enormous pride in their school. It is about teachers feeling energised, appreciated and motivated; being open to new challenges; unafraid to look critically on current practices and a willingness to work as part of a team. It is about students striving to do their best and feeling proud of their learning. It is about visitors to the school saying that this school has a great feel about it. It is about parents who are keen to be involved in their children’s learning and who want to send their children to the school because it feels right.

An exemplary school culture is one which evidences:

  • There are High Expectations and commitment for teaching, learning and behaviour
  • There is strength and connection in every relationship
  • There are processes to allow students to have independence over their learning
  • There is productive communication between all sections of the school community.
  • There is ongoing evaluation of programs and policies to ensure continual refinement and improvement.
  • There is inclusiveness of the school community in decision making.
  • There is parental and community involvement.
  • There are challenging and engaging programs accessible to all students.
  • There is respect for high standards of achievement.
  • There is high staff and student morale

…but most all everyone is immersed in the STRONG, SMART and CONNECTED culture that make our school a special place to grow and learn.

Instrumental Music Program News

On Tuesday our Year 2 students attended a Strings Program Recruitment Session. Ms Mulligan is pictured with some of her Strings Students performing for them. Interested Year 2 students can apply to be tested and then wait to see if they are accepted to learn a String instrument next year.

They must be reliable, responsible and safe students. It is also very helpful if they are good readers. Their classroom teachers will be giving out the forms to some of their interested students.

Recruitment Session

Ms Kelly Clarke-Flesser also ran a Recruitment Session for our Year 3's. In week 5 they will be tested to see if they are suitable candidates to learn a Brass, Woodwind or Percussion instrument. The Year 3's had a lovely time listening to the large beginner band performing. Students who apply must be reliable, responsible and safe students. It is also very helpful if they are good readers.

The class teachers have the nomination forms to be filled out by their parents/guardians. They must be returned to school for their classroom teachers feedback then they are collated by Mrs Wilson. Testing for all prospective 2020 instrumental students will occur in week 5. For more information on the Recruitment Process please call Mrs Wilson at school.
