St Mary's Bulletin

Term 2 - Week 5 (27 May, 2022)

Dear St Mary's School Community

Values in Focus: Trust

We rely on each other to do the right thing.

The Ascension of the Lord

Yesterday, the Feast of the Ascension was celebrated in the Catholic Church.  The Ascension is the event, where Jesus arose into heaven, at the end of his time on earth.  This is 40 days after Easter.

The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary celebrates the visit of Mary, the Mother of God, with the child Jesus in her womb, to her cousin Elizabeth. The visit took place when Elizabeth was herself six months' pregnant with the forerunner of Christ, Saint John the Baptist.  This feast is celebrated on Tuesday, 31 May.

Mary Help of Christians Mass

On Tuesday St Mary's School attended Mass in the Church to honour Mary Help of Christians. Thank you to the Year Six Class for doing a wonderful job at leading the Mass. It was wonderful to have the students back in Church.

National Simultaneous Storytime

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 22nd successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas across the Curriculum. This year's book was Family Tree written by Josh Pyke and illustrated by Ronojoy Ghosh.

National Reconciliation Week

Today is the start of Reconciliation Week and it ends on Friday, 3 June.  These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.  This year’s theme is:  Be Brave. Make Change. is a challenge to us all to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for all.

Book Club

Book Club brochures have been sent home with students today. Orders are due in by Sunday 5th June. Orders can be placed online here.

Faction Cross Country

The Faction Cross Country will be held next week on Thursday, 2nd June for students in Pre-Primary to Year Six. Information was sent home today via Skoolbag. Mrs Crees will require some parent volunteers to assist with the event on the day.

Assembly

Thank you to Miss Walsh and Year 3/4 class for presenting this morning's assembly about positive mindsets.  The students presented a very entertaining item with lots of appropriate messages. Well done.

Thank You

Thank you to Mrs O'Malley and Mrs Riethmuller for picking up extra duties this week after I tested positive to COVID19 (I have felt better but know I could be feeling much worse!).  There is never an opportune time for these things to occur and the week before taking Long Service Leave is definitely not one of them!  Thank you to both Zoe and Pauline for keeping things ticking along and stepping in (and up) for me - I am both grateful and very lucky!

Pastoral Care

As a community we offer our condolences to the Tomljanovich Family (Marissa - Staff) on the passing of their sister, sister in law and auntie, Caroline McCartney and to the Ryan Family (Lorraine - Staff) on the death of their father, father in law and grandfather, Vern Ryan.

May both Caroline and Vern Rest in Peace and may perpetual light shine on them.

God Bless and have a lovely weekend with your families.

Let Us Pray

Reconciliation Prayer

Holy Father, God of Love,

You are the Creator of all things.

We acknowledge the pain and shame of our history and the sufferings of Our peoples, and we ask your forgiveness.

We thank you for the survival of Indigenous cultures

Our hope is in you because you gave your Son Jesus to reconcile the world to you.

We pray for your strength and grace to forgive, accept and love one another, as you love us and forgive and accept us in the sacrifice of your Son.

Give us the courage to accept the realities of our history so that we may build a better future for our Nation.

Teach us to respect all cultures.

Teach us to care for our land and waters.

Help us to share justly the resources of this land. Help us to bring about spiritual and social change to improve the quality of life for all groups in our communities, especially the disadvantaged.

Help young people to find true dignity and self-esteem by your Spirit.

May your power and love be the foundations on which we build our families, our communities and our Nation, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
