Lismore South Public School Newsletter

Term 1 Week 11

Principal Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

Students from Lismore South Public School and Lismore South Public School Ngulliboo Jarjums Preschool will continue learning from Goonellabah Public School to begin Term 2. It is forecast that temporary demountable accommodation at Lismore South will be completed in early Term 2, which will allow our students to resume learning at their regular school site location shortly. School Infrastructure NSW will provide an update on the timelines of this in early Term 2.

I want to thank Goonellabah Public School staff who have been so accommodating during the relocation of our school. I also want to thank the LSPS team for their incredible support, care and focus. I know that our students have especially enjoyed accessing the GPS canteen and the playground equipment. Special thanks to GPS canteen manager Alison and the District Office's Wellbeing team for ensuring everyone was well fed each day. Next term, families will be required to get back into the routine of packing lunch and recess. Students will also return to school wearing full school uniform.

As we wrap up for the term, I want to acknowledge your children for being adaptable, brave and courageous. Having your children back at school attending everyday will continue to be an important part of their recovery.  Please know we will continue to do all we can to support the unique and individual needs of every child and the families impacted by the catastrophic floods. We are all in this together, whatever it takes!

We hope you can take some time to look after yourself during these holidays in any way you can. Term 2 begins for all students on Wednesday, 27th April. The school office will reopen on Tuesday 26th April at 8.45am.

Kind regards,

Larissa Polak

Special Thanks

We are so grateful for small acts of kindness. The messages of support have brought a smile to our faces and filled our hearts with hope. Students from Xavier Catholic College Ballina recently sent us a special card and beautiful letters showing support for our students and staff. Thank you for your kind words and keeping us in your thoughts.

ANZAC School Assembly

This week we held our ANZAC Day assembly with special guest Mr John Llewellyn from the Lismore RSL sub branch giving the ANZAC day address. Our school leaders did a superb job running the assembly and it was a pleasure to see our students listening respectfully. Thank you Mrs Golding for organising the assembly.

ADF Visit

We had an exciting visit from the ADF’s 10th Force Support Battalion this week. Students had the chance to thank the soldiers and gain a better understanding about the ADF’s role in disaster assistance and peace keeping missions.

The logistics team from Townsville were inspired by Company Sergeant Major Ballard to use the Return and Earn scheme to recycle cans whilst working in our area. With funds raised they purchased a new set of decodable readers for our P-2 students. We are so appreciative of the generous gift and the work done by the ADF supporting our community.

Operation Flood Assist - School Clean Up

We are immensely thankful for the progress made by the ADF and RAAF cleaning out our school site over the past three weeks. Thank you ADF ‘C Squadron, 1 Armoured Regiment’ from Adelaide and the RAAF personnel from Williamstown.

Year 6 Shirt Order

Thank you to our P&C for generously sponsoring the Year 6 shirts. All students will receive a new Year 6 shirt early next term.

High School Expression of Interest forms

All Year 6 students should have now received the High School Expression of Interest forms. Please fill in and return to our school office after the holidays.

Check In Assessments

Year 4 and Year 6 students will participate in reading and numeracy check-in assessments in the first two weeks of Term 2. The check-in assessments identify how students are performing in literacy and numeracy and help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs. Students with disability may receive the same level of support during the assessment that they would normally receive in the classroom.

Canteen Supervisor Vacant Position

Our school canteen Supervisor Position is vacant. If you or someone you know is interested in applying for the position, please email lismoresth-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au for an Application Package.

Students moving into Stage 3 in 2023 are invited to apply for positions in Opportunity classes. Opportunity classes cater for academically gifted and high potential students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. Successful students will usually have to leave their current school to enrol in a school with an opportunity class for Years 5 and 6. Goonellabah Public School has the closest Opportunity Class to Lismore South Public School.
